Yet another followup, they called back again to say, "Fine, we'll give you X." And I said, "Cool, please send it to me in writing and I'll give it some consideration before I give you my final answer." But internally I'm thinking, "Huh, maybe I should've asked for more."
Of course, the step after this is to go to my current company and say, "Hey look at this shiny new job offer I got, look at how much they're gonna pay me. Do you guys feel like giving me a raise?"
So my current company offered me a nifty raise. That's not the rant.
The rant is that I emailed the other company to say, "Hey, look at this nifty raise my current company's giving me, do you think you guys could increase your offer?"
One of the higher-ups at the new company called me and said, in a bit of a snooty and unhappy voice, "You really shouldn't put so much stock in the salary, firstly I'm sure you wouldn't feel cheated if you come here, the salary packages at our company has always been very competitive in our industry, and what's more you should think about the
long term, you should think about all the things you could
learn here with us, and look at the
team we're building here, I want you to think about all the intangible things you'd gain if you came here, I really don't like it when employees only think about
money..."
And all the while I'm there on the phone, going, "Uh huh, yep, I hear you, that's fascinating, I see what you mean..." But I'm thinking, "Nothing you're saying right now is convincing me that I should give up 20% of my salary."
