Quite a few years ago, @ThatNickGuy gifted me The Witcher 3 on GOG, but my computer couldn't handle it at all. I could barely move through the first tutorial room.
Just tried it again on my new rig, with the settings set to "Ultra", and it runs as smooth as butter. *chef's kiss*
... Do you have Crysis, by chance?

No I don't.
Unless you want to play it, I wouldn't bother getting it. It's not really a good benchmark of system performance. Yes, it'll still bring even modern systems to their knees on the highest settings, but that's because graphics technology changed directions at some point and current games/GPUs focus on doing things in different ways. It's like showing off that modern tools aren't much faster at making a house with lath and plaster walls, when the whole industry has moved over to drywall.

Too late, he has it now :D

Out of curiosity, how much did that whole rig cost? Ballpark figure.
About $4,100. I ordered it just as prices for computers parts were starting to rise. And the reason it took so long to get is because they didn't have the 3080 card they sold me in stock. So I had to wait for them to get more in, and I didn't have a choice unless I wanted to pay a lot more for another one because of the skyrocketing costs.

Aww man, I was just about to tease you about giving in and buying a lamp!
A lamp was like the 5th or 6th thing they brought it. I quickly built it and stuck it in the bedroom, where the poor guys kept trying to habitually flip the switch every time they walked in. I kept telling them "You have all my lamps" lol

After some terrible storms last night, I finally went into one of my attics for the first time to look for water damage. I didn't find any water. What I did find is this table and pet carrier which are definitely haunted. So, double win.

Nice table. The carrier just makes me think of different take on Gremlins, without the cute fluffy part.

The label explains that it was for an animal named "Beast". If that's not an excuse to make a Halloween decoration out of it, I don't know what it.

I also now desperately want to check the main attic in case there's more.

Interview today, interview Friday. Zach got a job that starts Monday so if nothing else comes up we're good for October. September is taken care of thanks to my severance, but I can't start unemployment until October so Zach getting his job takes a HUGE weight off my shoulders. Now if I don't get a $50k a year job we're still going to be fine since his portion of the bills will be going up accordingly.

And the lady that was supposed to call me today...didn't. Still, I will call her and let her know my availability.

I also have a phone interview for a job I applied for today. It's only a 5 minute phone "howdy!" kinda thing, but I'll take it. It pays a bit less than I want, but with Zach getting his job I can entertain anything and feel comfortable.

I have 3 upcoming interviews lined up. Tomorrow, next Wednesday, and one TBD as soon as the lady calls me back. One of them is a job that pays a metric fuckton and I know I could do but it keeps me in IT, which I'm not real happy about. One is a menial job that I will probably get an offer for but I don't really want unless I have to. The last is very interesting and probably the one I want. It pays almost $10k less than what I'm making now but has "potential for nearly unlimited overtime". It's a stupid job that I think I'd really like. Loading and delivering for Frito Lay. I know that sounds dumb but it's not IT, I get to travel around, and get to meet with people.

But the one that pays almost $20k more than I make now is good, too.

Decided to prune my twitter feed to cut back on the political doomscrolling. National news and celebrities are the first to go.
Literally did the same thing this morning.

I get the need for a change, but I went the opposite direction. LESS meeting new people and traveling.

Fingers crossed on the one that's the best overall for you (happiness plus cash).

The guy I complain most about at work, who is a snivelling, conniving, politics-playing, producing-nothing dead weight... HAS ACCEPTED A POSITION AT SOME OTHER HAPLESS COMPANY IN HOUSTON!

This is probably the best thing that could have happened to the company I work for, aside from the executive staff all deciding to take non-managerial ownership roles. But that will never happen. So I'll take this.

75% of the screwups at this job have been caused by the guy who is leaving. I am practically giddy.

The only drawback is his replacement is woefully untrained. But even from there, he can only get better - and he has a much better work ethic and is nowhere near as slimy, backstabby, or self-aggrandizing.

Tell us how you really feel about him.
This is the guy who (I think) I have previously described as "the guy who got kicked out of being a programmer, and my entire first year at the company was going back to jobs he 'finished' and redoing them right."

How he never got fired is a wonderment to me.

Met a new guy today...husband of someone I've known a few years. They live in Dallas, so they came to visit and we ended up playing Munchkin Cthulhu.
In that game there's a card, the Necronookiecon (along with several other necronomicon-alikes). This guy plays it, and then plays "of the middle ages", which gives it a bonus. As he sat back and took a sip of his soda, I quip "What, so now it's one page and all it has is the missionary position?"

Which caused him to spit his mouthful of soda. Victory! :D

After literal years of just taking up space, being on sabbatical means I'm finally transferring my old computer hard drive files and then storing them in a tiny case, as opposed to the cases that Dell or Gateway originally sent that are approximately the size of a Buick.

I don't know where to put this, because it's good.. but not... but I don't know.

Either way, I will be giving notice (the mandatory minimum of 90 days) at my current job this evening.
I do not have anything else lined up, though I do have an interview next week.

I am both relieved to know that I have 9 more Sundays to deal with, and also kinda bummed that I couldn't make it to the 5 year mark (next July) to grab a sabbatical. But the thought of going through another December season with ever-changing regulations, no support, and all the responsibility literally made me spontaneously start crying the other day, so I think it's definitely time to get the hell out.

I've never actually quit a job before. I've left because academic requirements took me elsewhere, or because of moving for @Eriol's work, but never just 'anything is better than this, peace!'

It feels very strange.

The Lost LEGO saga has ended. And I now know what it means when FedEx says they are experiencing "operational delays":

The last driver on the route to my address quit - and apparently did so in RageQuit(tm) fashion. As a result, the truck that was being constantly scanned had multiple damaged boxes on it. Mine, being not that big, escaped major damage, but the edges were obviously beaten up. The packaging of the LEGO sets was a little worse for wear, but everything inside was okay.

If I have to purchase anything online for the foreseeable future, it's gonna be through Amazon, or I'll pay for the expedited shipping on a different courier. (Sorry, @Bubble181.)
