More Problems For Sony

Jiarn

http://maintenance.station.sony.com/

We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).

Chibibar

DCUO is down too :( I'm thinking they are upgrading security stuff across their network.

#4

Espy

Espy

Holy CRAP. Seriously? This is just getting embarrassing now.

#5

FnordBear

FnordBear

It looks like Sony was using some seriously out-dated security.

I know the monthly subscribers are going to get a credit for the down time but I wonder what the people like myself who got lifetime subs will be getting for the service outage.

#6

Jiarn

Their facebook page officially announced that DC Online would not be back up tonight. At all. Guess I can stop checking.

#7

FnordBear

FnordBear

Apparently with their forums down all the fans flocked to the DCUOcentral forums and killed THEIR forums. *sighs* at least my league forums are up for what it is worth.

#8

Chibibar

Yea. It is not looking good at all :(
Luckily all my accounts has different password so my DCUO account and PSN account are two different password. I use gamecard so I should be "relatively" safe.

#9

SpecialKO

SpecialKO

....Thank God I've never bought anything through PSN or SOE with a credit card.

#10

FnordBear

FnordBear

Actually a bit of conspiracy theory for you:

Earlier last month my credit card was canceled without warning. When I called up the bank they said visa had reported a vendor's database had been compromised and card info was stolen. This is the same card I used for SOE/PSN purchases. This was WELL before the PSN debacle.

I seriously wonder how long ago this intrusion actually happened.

#12

Jiarn

We're looking at SoE being down for days. Not a day or two now. So much for my return to DC Online. Hey at least I'll get a free extra 30 days + whatever days they're down. I'm interested in what PSN freebies they're going to be giving away.

I changed my debit card info pretty much the day this info hit, which everyone should have done.

#13

FnordBear

FnordBear

So here is their "make good" freebie.

Son. I am disappoint.

http://www.psu.com/SOE-attack--make-good-plan-includes-free-DCUO-Batman-mask--a011529-p0.php

To quote on of the folk in my league " Its kinda like... I lost x amount of paid game time and a man in Nigera owns my house, but I got a Batman mask in game!"

"Inspired"?

Um, no. That's a Bat-Mask, plain and simple.

DC Universe™ Online - The Official Game Page
Hey folks, in response to many inquiries, we wanted to reassure you that all of your characters and items are safe and awaiting your return. We continue to work on the issues as fast as we can, but unfortunately the servers will not come up today. Thank you for your continued patience; we expect to be back up very soon.

#16

ThatNickGuy

I wonder if this will cause a delay in the PSN's reactivation. Then again, I think they're separate entities.

#17

FnordBear

FnordBear

They are separate with their own server/authentication server etc. I wonder though what they will do for lifetime subbers. I mean game time credit means diddly to me.

#18

SpecialKO

SpecialKO

They better do better by people whose CC#s are actually in the wind.

#19

Jiarn

And it continues:

Pretty much won't be available this weekend from the looks of it.

Sir Howard Stringer
Chairman, CEO and President, Sony Corporation

Dear Friends,

I know this has been a frustrating time for all of you.

Let me assure you that the resources of this company have been focused on investigating the entire nature and impact of the cyber-attack we’ve all experienced and on fixing it. We are absolutely dedicated to restoring full and safe service as soon as possible and rewarding you for your patience. We will settle for nothing less.

To date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely. We are also moving ahead with plans to help protect our customers from identity theft around the world. A program for U.S. PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers that includes a $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user was launched earlier today and announcements for other regions will be coming soon.

As we have announced, we will be offering a “Welcome Back” package to our customers once our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are up and running. This will include, among other benefits, a month of free PlayStation Plus membership for all PSN customers, as well as an extension of subscriptions for PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited customers to make up for time lost.

As a company we — and I — apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack. Under the leadership of Kazuo Hirai, we have teams working around the clock and around the world to restore your access to those services as quickly, and as safely, as possible.

I know some believe we should have notified our customers earlier than we did. It’s a fair question. As soon as we discovered the potential scope of the intrusion, we shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and hired some of the best technical experts in the field to determine what happened. I wish we could have gotten the answers we needed sooner, but forensic analysis is a complex, time-consuming process. Hackers, after all, do their best to cover their tracks, and it took some time for our experts to find those tracks and begin to identify what personal information had — or had not — been taken.

As a result of what we discovered we notified you of the breach. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are upgrading our security so that if attacks like this happen again, our defenses will be even stronger.

In the last few months, Sony has faced a terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But now we are facing a very man-made event – a criminal attack on us — and on you — and we are working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies around the world to apprehend those responsible.

In the coming days, we will restore service to the networks and welcome you back to the fun. I wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are committed to serving you to the very best of our ability, protecting your information better than ever, and getting you back to what you signed up for – all the games and great entertainment experiences that you expect from Sony.

With best regards,
Howard Stringer

They should just play the Tsunami Card and get everyone off their back. I mean, this outage has been driving me crazy but cmon now.....

I think it is still an inside job. Sony did fire a bunch of people.

Could be, but you would think they'd do more than just fire the person. Stealing personal (and especially CC) info isn't just a breach of contract, it's actually illegal in both the US and Japan.

Chibibar

Oh I'm sure. This is just a guess on my part. It is kinda "odd" that this major of a hack happens AFTER a major layoff. Yea. Maybe I'm thinking too much, but Sony should have at least beef up security with all the news of company being hack. There should have been a security audit LAST year after all the news of companies getting hacked.

More update on the "make good plan"

Omitted the parts not pertaining to DCUO

May 12, 2011
We thank you for your patience as we continue to work around the clock to restore our game services. We know this has been a frustrating time for you and appreciate your understanding as we work to confirm the security of our network.

In light of the recent outage of Sony Online Entertainment's game services due to April's cyber-attack, we are committed to compensating our loyal player base for the inconvenience caused by the data breach and lost game time while we improve our security measures.

We are currently in the process of an extensive upgrade to our network to further protect your information from future attacks. It will likely be at least a few more days before we restore our services, and when we come back online, here is what you can expect for each of our game services.

First and foremost, all impacted players will receive 30 days of game time added to the end of the current billing cycle in addition to one day for each day the system is down. Additionally, many games are offering a variety of in-game items and special events to welcome players back once our services resume (per the outline below). This is true for both PC and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system based products.

DC Universe™ Online: Batman™ and Two-Face™ Inspired Masks and 30 Marks of Distinction

For our lifetime subscribers, we'll grant in-game currency; specifically 20,000 coins for Free Realms, 7,500 Galactic Credits for Clone Wars Adventures and 10 Marks of Distinction for DC Universe Online (in addition to the items listed above).

And finally, our Station Access subscribers will receive 500 Station Cash, in addition to the subscription time and items listed above.

Additionally, we announced today that SOE will provide its U.S.-based Station Account holders with complimentary enrollment in an identity theft protection program through Debix, one of the industry's most reputable identity protection firms. For Station Account holders who live outside the U.S., SOE will be offering similar programs, if and as available, and will provide details as they're confirmed for each country or territory.

We continue to work around the clock to restore SOE's services and thank you for your continued patience as we complete our investigation of this criminal attack.

Thank you,
Sony Online Entertainment

What about the parts NOT partaining to DCUO or MMO's? Any word on general PSN players, aside from the extension of Plus we've heard?

#30

Chibibar

What about the parts NOT partaining to DCUO or MMO's? Any word on general PSN players, aside from the extension of Plus we've heard?
I believe the original statement (which should still be true) is free 30 day membership AND +1 day free for the outage.

Free membership of what? Isn't PSN network free?

They have a premium version that gets you earlier access to stuff and more free stuff I guess. I dunno, I ignore PSN for the most part, but the demos are nice.

Free membership of what? Isn't PSN network free?
I do believe it is called PSN Plus.

#34

That's close to nothing. They rewarded me with lint for a month of downtime.

They're going to announce a list of games they're going to give away for free.

As a PSP owner who literally logged into the PSN twice before all of this, I look forward to collecting my two games with righteous indignation.

Assuming I can ever log in that is...

#49

Jiarn

I didn't get any of the above because I haven't been able to reset my password for PSN.

#50

Chibibar

Heh. that is weird. So SOe are bringing down the account system and update BUT you can still access the forum but can't do anything about it. For a min, I panicked cause I thought I got hacked with the new password (a really strong and new password I never use before) but then I read the SOE announcement.

#51

Espy

I dunno, the more we get into this problem the more I just think, this is the future. The more we invest ourselves digitally the more targets for people with no regard for the law or personal privacy we create. I think Sony made some missteps here but in the end this could have happened to almost anyone from what I've read so far.

That is true. We already heard about security firm being hacked, CC company, banks, government, corporations and even facilities (nuclear powerplants)

#53

Espy

Espy

That doesn't absolve companies who get hacked from any negligence but the reality is this is always going to happen, even when you have great security.

#54

Chibibar

That doesn't absolve companies who get hacked from any negligence but the reality is this is always going to happen, even when you have great security.
Problem is that most of these doesn't have great security (IMO) The best they could do is encrypt the data when stored so that way when people hack them, they just get a bunch of encrypted data unlike the last haul from SOE. Now the hacker can update their rainbow table with the new sets of hash passwords.

#55

I think the thing that bothered a lot of people so much wasn't the hacking, but that Sony had been really negligent in updating server software.

still think it was an inside job, but part of standard procedure was changing main password (or people don't have master password) to the server. There was a major layoff so I don't know which department was laid off.

But you are right, the IT should keep the server up to date and monitor traffic.

I think a lot of company gotta REALLY look into security and safe guard all these info they are hoarding. I know it is a marketing bonanza but if they don't protect it, it is more likely to bite them in the wallet if they are not careful.

Sony has been hit again, 2 more of their sites/networks/divisions have been hacked, bringing the total number of known Sony hacks to 8. Part of me feels really bad for Sony, and part of me wants to know what the fuck they're doing about network security - we've moved beyond The Three Stooges security team and on to Keystone Kops, talkies are too good for them.

And then some of us want those free games.

I think the big victims here (not of the hacking incident, but of the PSN functionality) are games dependent on multi-player that are being released in this time, that aren't getting their full use. It's probably hurting sales, especially for indie games that don't have physical versions to purchase.

I'm torn between agreeing with you, and thinking that Sony is more like an annoying asshole who went into a bar, picked a fight, and ended up starting a bar brawl. Sony has been treating their customers poorly for years. They installed rootkits on people's PCs via audio CD, and their customer support for their computers was so bad it made my sister cry, among other things.

This isn't about Sony making themselves an attractive target, this was Sony being flagrantly rude to their customers. Sony has basically been taunting the public for years, and a group finally punched them in the face for it. That doesn't make the punch right, but Sony should have seen it coming.

Except the illegal copies didn't have the copy protection on them that was causing the problem, it was the actual CDs. Sony's shitty DRM actually gave hackers a backdoor into people's PCs because of the bad coding. That's why people were so upset with them a few years back.

Well I tried redeeming my Free PS3 game. Clicked it, tried downloading Little Big Planet got an error, now I don't have a "Free PS3 Game 1" available as a choice anymore. Now I just have "Free PS3 Game 2" and my two PSP game options.

Wonderful.
Wow.

Got the error, then decided to go out for a bike ride came back and now it is down.

Fantastic.

I tried late last night and got both games to begin downloading pretty easily. I got a couple of errors trying, but just kept trying after every error and it started working. I imagine the network is being just hammered.

Yesterday I got a few errors but I managed to get to the games to start downloading. But it said it was going to take 5 hours to download so I figured they must be swamped and I would try again in the morning. I just woke up and tried logging on to the Playstation store so I could try again and now I get an error and I can't get back on.

Yeah, been getting errors constantly. What sucks is that I forgot my password...so I can't log into my new PSP. It's auto-saved on my PS3, though, so I was able to get me some sweet free stuff. Once I had to go back several times after getting error messages.

Then again, they're getting swamped with people right now, so it's understandable. Give it some time to cool down.

This pretty much confirms it...I am never going to use my CC to buy shit on PSN/XBLA.

You can get the GOTY version (which has all the DLC) for less than that. Seriously, just buy that instead.

So now I'm out my "PS3 Game 1" cause I don't have a game or a download option.

I think this ordeal gives us plenty of understanding that it is perhaps inadvisable to buy things off consoles with our credit cards and we'd be better off buying the point cards in game store instead.

If you continue to use your credit card and they get hacked again (and all signs lead to yes TBH) then perhaps you deserve to have your credit card data stolen.

AshburnerX

I've always used the cards unless there is some exceptionally good deal directly from the company. For instance, I know it's possible to get a full year of Xbox Live for around $36 right now (but you need to be offered it via the console).

Hmm, can you pay with paypal through the console? I know you can do it through the website.

Really? Can I just load up my saved version of the regular game then?

I don't know, I did this a few weeks ago (but I've been told they are still offering it). However, you need to let them offer it to you via the console menu or get a link to the deal from an email from the company. That's how I got it.

Really? Can I just load up my saved version of the regular game then?
Yeah, it's just the normal version but it comes packed with 4 DLC codes. Your saves will be fine.

Downloaded Infamous. Not sure I really care with others; we have Little Big Planet, and I don't think I want the PSP games clogging up my memory stick.

Was hoping once it came back up I'd have my download link back. Nope, "Free PS3 Game 1" is still gone.

Wait another day, if it's still not there, contact Customer Support I suppose.

tbh I'm lovin' this, I think they aren't going to stop until sony goes completely under. which is VERY possible, they must have lost a few bil with all these problems.

$170M from the hacks, so far.

I'm honestly less concerned about Sony, and more about the developers doing work on the PSN. I heard from a friend on the programming side that the dev net also went down. So not only did indie developers lose a month and change of sales, they also lost the same in development time. Throw in the guys who won't be able to announce launches at E3 that their companies spent (relatively) large amounts of money on, and that's really not good.

You have no idea how much money Sony has.

SpecialKO is more accurate--this is hurting the people who make games for Sony's network and system.

Jiarn, I'm in the same boat. If you look at the announcement on the Sony blog, they have instructions for what to do if the options vanish like they did for us. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm holding onto hope.

The big irony is that I haven't been to the online store and was genuinely intrigued with some of the stuff there (PS1 games for the PSP for instance) until this failed. UMD for me, thanks.

Yeah, WTH, who wants a bunch of basement dwelling dumbassess hacking Sony's shit and hurting the developers and the gamers? Why the hell would anyone support that?

#149

Well everything's fine and dandy. The GF is enjoying the hell out of Little Big Planet and we're looking forward to playing some Dead Nation together soon.

Mine are still downloading, my original 60 gig model no longer accepts wired connections (I think the port in the back is dead) and the wireless connection to my wireless router in the basement is total garbage.

Got dead nation and the space shooter game. Upgraded to the free PSN plus program and downloaded for free Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I assume once my month is gone that it won't work anymore? Either way I'm gonna play the crap out of it this month.

I downloaded Wipeout HD and inFAMOUS. I haven't even got around to playing them yet but I already am wondering if I should have gone with Dead Nation instead of inFAMOUS but oh well.

What is "your XMB" they are referring to? When I try to manage my account through the site, I'm left on a page with a "Down for maintenance" message, which is not improving my loss of download options issue. How did you get them back?

EDIT: Never mind. Didn't realize it was part of the PSP Menu.

Guess Sony isn't the only one with shitty security. Though that is still blaming victims of crimes. The idiocy of our culture and it's teaching don't get raped instead of don't fucking rape. Victim blaming always infuriates me.
