Movie News & Miscellany

The original were fairly-well-done takes on stereotypes made up of tropes and inversions of tropes as well. I haven't seen anything to make me enthousiastic about this movie just yet, but nothing to say it'll automatically be terrible, either.

If the Boston Herald is to be believed, the synopsis is:
"Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig will play unknown authors who publish a book asserting that ghosts are real. Their writing gains unwelcome attention a few years later, after Wiig lands a teaching position at Columbia University, and she’s soon laughed out of academia. The two later team with supernatural sleuths played by Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, and save the day when ghosts invade Manhattan."

Maybe not nerds, but more academia?

Academia is chock-full-of-nerds and Ivory-tower elitists. So, they can be picked on for sure.

I think they should take a swipe at the EPA again or some other bloated government agency (homeland security this time?).
See, making fun of the EPA wouldn't work because the EPA's view at the time has been proven true. But I could totally see Homeland Security raiding their place of business as soon as they figure out the proton packs are NUCLEAR and could be turned into bombs.

Wiig's situation sounds like it could've easily been Ray's backstory.

... or Dan Akroyd's.

I won't go see another Spider-Man in the theaters until the franchise is in different hands; same goes for X-men. I don't care about the actors involved. The caveat would be if they decided to go a Mile Morales route and shake things up, which they won't.

But.... it is in new hands. This will be more of a Marvel Studios film than a Sony picture movie bringing Spider-Man into the fold so to speak. Neither Webb or Rami are involved..... therefore new hands.

Technically, it's still in Sony's hands. There is just the factor of Marvel Studios now having their hand in it. Hopefully they help influence the Spider-Man films to a better course than where they were headed.

What I meant is that Sony execs will still likely have major influence (because no one gives up power), and I don't think much will change. Hopefully, I am wrong. I really like the characters. I haven't been impressed with any of the Spider-Man films. I am a bit of a negative nancy. No matter what happens, I will see it on DVD b/c it is a comic-book movie.

Holy shit, James Horner is dead. Crashed a small plane he was flying. That's just nuts. I thought he'd be composing for a while longer.

For those not recognizing the name, you may know his music from Aliens, the Terminator movies, A Beautiful Mind, Avatar, to name very few.

Indeed a sad day, as shown by the sentiments over there in the Brazelton thread
Willow, Krull, Glory, Titamic, to name some more. And of course Battle beyond the stars! :)

Except for Titanic, I loved pretty much all of his work. I was just humming the theme to Battle Beyond The Stars the other day.

Oh, sorry. I didn't think anyone here cared about composers much, so I didn't bother looking for a thread. Thanks.
Don't worry, they are often the overlooked heroes in movies, but we do dig them very much! The gf and I just went through youtube, from one Horner clip to the next and teared upa little.
I still do this every now and then for Basil Poledouris, and not to forget Jerry Goldsmith (Gosh, his score for The 'burbs is so funny).

Jerry Goldsmith is kind of who I was thinking of with no one caring much. Not this board in particular, but it didn't seem to get much attention. Then again, he seemed to have that problem in his career too.

Jerry Goldsmith died back in 2004, I really have no idea anymore how active this board was back then and what it looked like. :)
I remember we had a thread for Basil Poledouris (died 2006).

So Ghostbusters is a complete reboot then? Because I'm pretty sure everyone would agree ghosts are real by now.

2004, really? I could've sworn it was later. Maybe I didn't find out until later.

So apparently Entourage is pretty awful, y'all. This is a very entertaining read about how bad it is. Here are some select quotes from that review, over frames of the movie.

The terrorists have trained bomb-rigged flocks of birds to kamikaze major U.S. cities, and only the most elite American military warriors can stop them!

Sigh... one of these days Jai Courtney will be in a good movie. One of these days.

Here's hoping Suicide Squad won't suck.
