Movie News & Miscellany

Wut? David Hayter wrote the X-Men movie, blame Solid Snake.
Joss Whedon did script doctoring back then on movies such as X-Men and Toy Story. That line was one of his.

The line isn't as much a problem as the delivery. Imagine Buffy quipping it in her Sarah Michelle Gellar's snarky tone and it's fine. Halle Berry delivered like it was a straight, serious line.

Ah, I did see he wrote a treatment, didn't realize that was one of his (though I guess it makes sense).

There's a gifset on tumblr that neatly sums up the problem with Halle Berry's storm, from X-Men: The Last Stand. Rogue is excited to hear that there's a cure for being a mutant, and Storm completely shuts her down. It comes down to this:

“There’s a cure?!” asked the girl that kills everything she touches.
“Hey shut up we’re perf” replied the girl that makes clouds.

Now I've seen it go on explain that Storm is a lot warier of people wanting to "cure mutants" - to take away their natural gifts, to reduce them, etc. The problem is that Halle's acting as Storm doesn't sell that depth of character. Yes, Ororo has plenty of backstory that would fit her not trusting a way to get rid of mutants. But the Storm Halle Berry plays doesn't come off that way. Now, I'm sorry, but being completely unable to have physical contact with anything without draining the life out of it to a potentially fatal degree would definitely count as "something wrong". Combine that with the fact that Anna Paquin's Rogue isn't the nigh invulnerable sassy flying powerhouse that she is in other X-Men incarnations, where giving up her powers would cost the heroes a heavy hitter, and it comes off badly.

I think I know text you're referring to; wish I could find it.

The first X-Men movie made most of the main team seem more vulnerable and uncomfortable with their powers (Logan talking about the claws always hurting, Rogue being much weaker but still capable of easily killing someone, etc). Storm seemed to be the only exception to this, considering she's basically a God as her powers were unchanged from the comics, and Berry's fairly wooden performance.

The problem with Halle Berry's performance was that she always seemed too meek as Storm. In order to pull off the point of view that was presented of her in the movie, she needed to be forceful and strong willed, whereas Berry's performance was rather soft spoken and lacking. I know Berry can be a good actress, I've seen her in very good roles, but her take on this character (or possibly the direction given to her) was atrocious.

Loved the jabs at The Green Lantern costume, the "Fuck Liefeld". Looking good so far, and it will be fun to pick out shooting locations around the city.

You know, I saw a pretty good point on /co/ tonight.

Nobody's talking about the Fantastic Four movie. Like, the one thread I saw on /co/ is the first I've heard of it, really, since the trailer showed up.

There are 2 mediocre movies in recent memory and there hasn't been any exciting news about this one. Most of the news has generally been negative - Dr. Doom's now a hacker / blogger with an attitude, the director is apparently such a flake the studio removed him from a major project he was supposed to helm, etc. So really there's no buzz.

I mean, it's also strange that I don't really see the trailer on tv at all, or any kind of sidebar ad online. It's like the movie's been forgotten before it even premiered.

I was a little under-whelmed by the Deadpool trailer. I think he works best as a cartoon, but it seems like they are at least trying to get it right.

If you don't get it (or aren't using chrome) you'll need to stretch it over three wraparound monitors like a flight simulator.

It's a neat gimmick and it's a pretty city, but it tells me jack squat about the movie, it's plot, how the action is portrayed, how the acting might be.

Without knowing this is for a movie, I would just assume it was for an eagle simulator video game.

They were apparently super-thorough in keeping cameras/video out of the booth and hall for Warcraft. There's images here and there but nothing really concrete outside of character posters. The trailer's out in November.
