I'll check it out. Still miffed about not getting in the beta though. It's Star Trek

Beta ends tonight and I've already lost all desire to play. I was pushing through the levels to get my next ship, but now that I know I won't be able to get another, I just can't find the energy to play anymore.

So is a wartime? In the shows, the Federation ships are so lightly armed in order to foster an image of peaceful exploration, right?
Yes and no. During times of non-war, most Federation ships are built for science, exploration, medical transport, etc. Until DS9 got the Defiant and Voyager's introduction of the Intrepid class, there weren't really any "war" ships, or ships designed to go into combat specifically. Even when Voyager was ending, the Federation was still cranking out war ships, i.e. the Prometheus class. There was no major war going on in the TNG timeline so all the ship we saw were peaceful ships, whom just had the default load of X phaser banks and Y torpedo tubes.

Oh and sry for the spoilers, didnt realize Frankie posted that earlier.

Beta ends at 6pm PST / 9pm EST

Massive end of beta event is a huge Klingon attack force gunning for the Sol System, this should be awesome

There's an old saying, fortune favors the bold. I guess we're about to find out.

Is there an endgame?
Maybe, but I think most of it was still locked. I'm almost certain you couldn't enter Borg space yet. Regardless, I just kinda got sick of it. It's fun for awhile but it just didn't click with me.

Can you achieve the rank of an Admiral or is Captain the highest available ranking?

R

Rubicon

yes, you can level up to Admiral, its currently the highest level, which caps out at 45 I believe, future expansions to increase that are planned.

Honestly Seeing the way Cryptic has been handling CO, I'd be wary of giving them any money. If the double dipping in CO isn't bad enough (having a monthly fee AND a cash shop!) they've recently announced that they'll be charging players for an "expansion" that in any other MMO would be a free content update (1 new zone basically). In comparison, in one month past launch LOTRO also gave its player's a massive zone added to the game too, except you know, for free. Really Cryptic, how greedy can you get?

Will these poor business practices carry over to STO... time will tell I suppose.

Also whats the deal with MMOs calling any old content updates "expansions" these days anyways? Who do they think they're fooling?

Everquest was pretty bad about charging for content updates too. There were what, like 12 expansions? It's not a new thing.

Ok, it picks up a bit, but I'd still only pick it up if you were a hardcore Star Trek fan. :p

I think that might be the case. I actually love it. I did try a little PvP last night (Federation vs Klingons) it was pretty awesome. I did the ground arena fight and space "control" resources. It was pretty cool.

Anyone else see the lovely irony behind a Star Trek MMO?
umm.. no?
The whole purpose and overall theme of Star Trek is the bettering of mankind through exploration, knowledge, and self worth. Those traits are the exact opposite of what an MMO promotes. You're not boldly going where no man has gone before, you're sitting your fat ass down in front of a computer screen for hours at a time.

Ahh. oh you mean real life vs gaming ok... yea it is funny. I thought you meant within STO universe.

Well looks like STO is going the same money grubbing route as CO...

MMORPG.com: Star Trek Online will require a subscription fee to play, but also gives players access to the Cryptic Store. What items are offered in the store and how does it affect gameplay?

STO Team:It's fairly limited right now. It will include the Ferengi and Klingon races to be playable for the Federation side at launch. We want to get an idea of what players want before adding much more. But we're sticking to the notion that if it affects gameplay, there will be ways of attaining whatever is available in the store in-game.
Paying to play certain races. Real classy Cryptic. Way to nickel and dime your players for all they're worth.

Imagine the backlash if Blizzard said one day "Well, you can play humans, gnomes, dwarves, draeni, tauren, trolls, orcs, and undead, but if you want to play a night elf or blood elf give us moar monies plz!" And people freaked out over an in-game pet...

Yea. I'm kinda half and half on this (getting the races) but it seems that the U.S. is trying to MicroPayment + monthly instead of doing what Asia MMO are popular with which is free to play and micro.

I mean at least DDO (player classes and race) are purchasable BUT the game itself is free. A lot more stuff is becoming free which is kinda nice (instances and such even high level stuff) but doing both.... that is just greedy.

D

Dusty668

So, basically, they did a 180 from what they were doing with CoH, where almost every content release was free.
Actually City of Villains initially was a charged update UNTIL JACK LEFT, but it is now free, Going Rogue which is expected sometime this year is going to be charged as well, but I doubt it will stay that way.

Once Jack leaves STO for the Duke Nukem MMO (trapping him there forever) you'll prolly see a more competitive pricing policy.

I thought you were gonna make some kind of holodeck/holoaddiction comment, but I guess that would more appropriately fit the irony of playing the Matrix Online.

Cash shops are fine in a F2P game. Of course the company has to make money somehow, but this double-dipping of subscription fees plus cash shop is what I just can't stand and Cryptic seems to be the main culprit doing this. I mean, for some premium services it doesn't bother me to pay extra on top of a sub, like name/server/faction changes, but buying access to new races... come on.

I agree. Of course I guess Cryptic could have bundle it to say a full expansion (more space and TWO new playable race) for 49.95$ instead of less than 4.5$ (500 cryptic points for 6.25$)

Sub + cash shop does seem a little much compared to what you get for it.

I don't think the concept is a bad one (after all, a price is only too high until a sufficiently large audience is proven to be willing to pay for it), but they definitely seem to be offering less bang-for-buck than most of their competitors at this point.

yeah, he's been getting better lately with his art, and his one-shot clips tend to amuse me.
I tried reading CAD a year ago, and got bored with the bland artwork and lame humor. All the anti-CAD stuff on the forums made me go look at it again every time it was mentioned, and over the last few months, I've seen some real improvement in his stuff.

C

That's actually the best CAD strip I've seen in years.

Notice how it's not a force 4 panel progression. The comic fits. He's larnin'.

Any true fan of the Matrix philosophy would have stayed clear of that game.

Matrix Online was not as good as I hoped :( It was kinda fun and animation was pretty but.... it lacked something I can't put my finger on.

It contradicted everything the protagonists in the films were fighting for?

that might be it. I was in close and open beta and didn't go live (like most MMO) cause it just..... blah..

So for those of you who own it. How is it compared to the beta? Were your stats reset when you transitioned over to the 'finished' game?
I've heard a lot of people complaining how lame ass the tutorial is. I still want to get the game, but seeing as how there isn't a 14 day free trial yet; I don't know.

And with regards to CAD I've found him to be getting better. His daily sillies are better than his main comic though with the humor aspect. The Star Trek comic
was indeed funny.

We had a 4 day head start and get to keep that (started on Jan 29th) I like it. I don't think the tutorial is "lame" ass. It is informative to get people going and help them start on their way. Sure for us Beta players, we already did it, so I guess they are hoping we can skip it.

note: if you have a Del Taco in your area, they are doing a promotion with free time for STO.http://www.facebook.com/deltaco?v=app_10339498918

Like any mmo that goes from open beta to live, the world is reset. All characters deleted. You had to reroll from level 1.

So far I'm liking it. I'm in an active Fleet of about 30+ people daily across various timezones and countries, we pvp and have fun.

I'm hoping they add a death penalty and more purpose/reward to pvp but aside from that, I love it.
