No no... people get a Liberated Borg Officer and Liberated Borg as a race when they become lifers. It's not another side like the Klingons.

how does that work? aren't we fighting the liberated borg? (It seems like it since the tutorial said they were "different")

So I fought my first Romulan Warbird today. It's insane heavy plasma torpedo assault, coupled with the recent buff to enemy difficulty, kicked the holy fuck out of me. Hardest fight yet. It didn't help that it was battleship class 2 levels higher than me. It was also huge. I always forget that warbirds are supposed to be twice as large as a galaxy class ship. Awesome fight.

Just got hit with this nice new bug where an enemy boarding party causes all your weapons to require a 20 minute cooldown in order to be fired again. Super fun.

I finally hit level 11 and got my new ship, Light Escort. Its a huge step up from the default Miranda class.. It can turn pretty damn swift, I get two tactical boff slots, 4 weapon slots, etc. pretty damn awesome, think of the Defiant and thats what its similar to. Still trying to find a good loadout of weapons, it came with a set of Phaser "cannons", and i just loaded my Mark II phasers I had before but the canons range/arc (I think arc is range) is small for not much more damage.

Definitely liked Tactical so far, but I may mess around with Engineering, headstart begins on the 29th, wanna get a solid build going

Engineering is pretty nice if you get a kit that lets you build a Shield Generator AND do something else (build mines/phaser turret/whatever). The mines are nice against Klingons and the like who rush you, while the Turret does alright damage but mainly serves as a distraction. Don't know much about them for space... I only JUST got my third Lt. ability and haven't got a chance to test it out yet.

Think of it this way, the liberated borg that Lifers get is like 7of9, the liberated borg you are fighting are like Lore's gang of borg.

Do these ships have that auto laser turrent defense that was in the latest star trek movie or is this only from the next generation firing mode?

Yeah, you can get Phaser Turrets (if that's that's what your talking about.) They have a 360 degree arc firing range, so they can hit anything within 10km of your shipt, but the damage is the worst of all weapons. However, I use them on my rear array to allow me to use my rear array even if I'm not broadsiding someone. It seems to work well for me, as I can basically destroy any ship in about 30-60 seconds.

Is anyone else playing at retail? I didnt do Lifetime but I did pre order the CE. If some other Halforumites are serious about playing the game, we could look into making our own Fleet (guild) once the game launches

I'm not getting in on the ground floor. There's too many other games in my pile (Bayonetta, Mass Effect 2 etc) before I even wanna think about going hardcore into an MMO.

So, I ground for like 2 hours this morning to get to Commander. I was literally one more scan from finishing off an exploration quest which would have put me over the top when I "LOST CONNECTION" to game server. Now, I can log in to my account, see my characters, but can't log in to the game.

Sigh.

Hyper sigh.

I might try this game after hearing some reviews/finishing ME2/finishing TNG. We'll see. I might need my fix. :)

Got my cruiser yesterday. It honestly seems like this game is geared toward ether being an Escort and being tied to teams forever or being a Cruiser/Science Vessel and being able to solo EVERYTHING on your own. I hope the roles become less defined later on or they make being a DPS more viable in solo play.

I am going life cause I do enjoy the beta I play. I can see playing this for a year or two at least (which even out after 16 months with life) and I don't have to pay anymore. I usually play a game for a year or two at least (MMO) the shortest I ever play MMO was champions.

My cruiser is built entirely around being nigh invincible. Both of my engineering slots have emergency power to shields. I've been able to wade through everything and come out the victor without barely taking a scratch. The Klingons I've fought in PVP can't handle me without more than one ship because my cruiser is a total juggernaut.

I think it requires thinking defensively over offensively. Like I said, I've solo'd everything thus far.

Also, yes, currently escorts are supremely overpowered especially considering all rewards in the fleet actions are based on damage done. I can sit there and tank 3 Negh'Vars and a fucking fleet of escorts and 2 escorts can do their job and I will get nothing. All the ship drops will go to them and the end mission rewards will go to them. Totally broken.

You can solo some stuff on your own as DPS. You simply mix and match. Instead of going Tactical/Tactical (toon/ship) you go like Tactical/Engineering or Tactical/Science. Plus your skills and ship loadout plays a role too. And trust me, the PvE scales up as you do. I mean you can solo but the game is built more around Fleets or at the very least, parties.

Don't forget they only took the level cap off for the open beta the other day and the vast majority of us won't get to see end game stuff before beta ends. Come on Ash, you know you wanna play at retail ;)

holy fucking shit

There's a quest for the Portal..

You fight off half a dozen squads of Klingons, then you talk to it, and it sounds just like the voice actor from the show. It continues the quest, and you get transported 200 years back in time to save the Enterprise! You hail the ship and it's fucking Leonard Nimoy as Spock that answers in voice over! nerdgasm..

omg I can't wait for the game to start on the 29th, go go headstart from pre order!

Not only did I already post this a page or so ago, I also spoilered it for people. Way to go chief.

It's kind of like the Zelda Universe: The timeline splits after a certain point, and the two timelines run concurrently of one another.

So is a wartime? In the shows, the Federation ships are so lightly armed in order to foster an image of peaceful exploration, right?

It is like the quote at the end of the intro to the MOO2 Star Trek Game. "..Federation Ships are not designed to start wars, but to end them..."

Iaculus

So, it basically takes place in the future of the rebooted universe?
Nope. Future of the original, after the events that led to the rebooted universe's creation.

There is indeed a war on - the Klingon Empire has started getting antsy again, among other things. Regarding Feddie ships, there are three types. Cruisers like the various Enterprises (so, standard expolration-y Federation vessels), 'science ships' like the Voyager, and dedicated warships like the Defiant, called 'escorts', which are much smaller and not so good at the whole science/exploration business.

I

Iaculus

Are they going to go up to the Battleship size vessels like Galaxy and Sovereign classes?
Those are advanced tiers of 'cruiser' - tiers three and four of five, respectively. The ground-level cruiser is an updated 25th-century Constitution.

Huh. A trip through Memory Alpha (almost as dangerous as TVTropes) just told me that the in-universe origin of the Bird of Prey was stolen Federation ship designs. In fact, there was planned (and later cut) dialogue to that effect in the original Balance of Terror episode.

The game goes ahead and blames the romulans fucking around with subspace weapons for the reason that the supernova hit them in hours rather than in centuries. Ha ha, new movie apologists.

So, they stole the plans of the NX-1... lol. That is why they looked so much alike.

So are folks much more approving of the current build?
I like it a lot. I think it has potential, but not sure of the "long term" (in terms of what it will be 3-4 years from now heck even 2 years from now. I'm hoping to last at LEAST 16 months to make my money's worth heheh)

I mean lore wise, Atari did the right thing and start with "open" story. So it won't mess with any of the histories and we have our own universe (unlike SWG which they wrote themselves into a corner more or less)

Yeah, there really seems like a total dearth of overall content.

It seems like it might take 2-4 weeks tops to do everything there is to do.
