Got my cruiser. Man, it nice being able to wade into a battlegroup of frigates with weapons set to max and just obliterate them in a storm of quantum torpedos. Wooo!

booo.. I am still working to get upto Lt. commander so I can upgrade my ship :(

Played about 2 hours last night. Sometimes the lag was unbearable... other times... nothing. It's weird to see so much lag in an instance of 3 people.

Do you have a certain amount of quantum torpedoes though? In Legacy you only were allowed a certain allotment.

Is the Akira a picable cruiser?

Maybe eventually. Basically you start out as a light cruiser for the first ten levels. It's a Miranda and 2 other similar ships. When you pick your next ship, you either pick an escort (which you get various defiant esque ships I've never heard of) science vessel (the nova and various alike ships) or a cruiser (constitution and various alike ships). You can mix and match all the parts of any of your selected class of ship for a look that you like.

New patch is sweet. Game runs much better, the away mission graphics got a huge, huge boost. The UI was improved vastly, and they added Leonard Nimoy narration to the game to explain the story thus far. Big improvement.

Zachary Quinto does the voice of the EMH during the tutorial.

Man, you know what. I dunno what they did to the enemy Ai, but combat is now ridiculously easy. Before you could walk into a fight and if you weren't careful, easily get overwhelmed. I don't even have to monitor my shield strength anymore. I can wade into a battlegroup of battleships during a fleet action and walk out the victor.

wow really?? I know that some mission I have to be careful or I will get cream when fighting 3 to 1 (at 0 and +1) That is pretty awesome cause I have to maneuver and keep my shield up and use asteroid to help :) I gotta check them out when I get home tonight.

How "amazing" was any MMO in the first 1/5th of it's levels?
Shego has a point :) so far I'm working in 1 sector of space (Sol Sector mainly) Cryptic just open Cardassian space. That is a lot more places to go. I think this is kinda like simplified EVE with levels! ;)
I like it so far.

Yeah, till you actually got into the game and into the first 1/5th of it's levels. CoH lost me in the training area before I was bored, but I thought "this is just the beginning, the rest of the game can't be like this, it has to get 'epic' at some point". For once, I was wrong. CoH showed me everything it had to offer in the first 1/5th of it.

Yea they had to scale back AI difficulty, getting two shotted by a Klingon K't'inga that was 3 or 4 levels below you was a bit overpowered.. It's still challenging it's just the AI is now scaled a little more appropriately.

I put in my pre order at Gamestop for the CE, can't wait for headstart to begin on the 29th

I have to agree with him on one major point: This does NOT feel like Star Trek. I'm neither exploring new worlds nor discovering new civilizations... all I'm doing is killing fucking pirates and Klingons. When do I get to explore lost ruins? When do I get to see exotic astrometric phenomena? WHEN DO I GET TO MAKE LOVE TO MY ORION SLAVE GIRLS?!

However, I never had the same problems he's had with the difficulty unless I'm getting ganged up on by 6-7 ships at once. Quite the opposite, I'm killing shit left and right with my dinky Miranda class ship. I think they messed with the diff or something.

Have you played at least half of the entire game yet Ash? If not, I don't see how you could say it doesn't have those things.

That doesn't stop it from being poorly paced. Your supposed to be pulling in people with the early levels, not pushing them away. The stuff I'm doing at this point in the game should be at least mildly interesting... killing Klingons is not why I joined Star Fleet! :)

Honestly Shego... your pushing awfully hard for this game to be good, for someone who isn't playing it. Are you hoping this will be the "MMO Chewing Gum" you've been looking for lately?

EDIT: And I too think this login bullshit is lame. You could at least put me in a line or something if the servers are full.

No, I just have issues with people who rail on an MMO before they've even gotten a decent % into the game, moreso when it's still in BETA.

It might be poorly paced, it might be a terrible game, granted. But saying it doesn't have something when so early on the game just doesn't sit well.

(For the record, I'm by no means a Trek fan, and have zero intentions of every playing this MMO)

Normally I wouldn't mock people but man, if you were getting taken out by a K'Tinga, you really need to learn to flank.

I liked the difficulty before. I could take on a Negh'Var with my Miranda but it was total cat and mouse working my ass off to stay at it's side to avoid it's fucking alpha strike of small ship destruction if you got in front of or behind it. Now I don't have to worry. I took out a group of 4 even level Negh'Vars by myself during a fleet action and barely had to do anything other than rebalance my shields a few times and use my emergency power to shields once or twice. I came out of it with 80% hull integrity. That shouldn't be possible.

Hell, there's a mission where it tells you to hide and sneak up to a planet using a nebula and there's Birds of Prey everywhere. I decided to find out what happens if I got detected. Like 9 Birds of Prey decloaked around the one I attacked. They weren't even a challenge. They made it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to easy.

Well, my toon in Beta has been pure Tactical.. So while I can hit like a truck with phasers and torepedos, my shield and hull strength is minimal with no way to really heal myself.

And yea in fights, I do flank. I rotate like a mad man, trying to balance shields and keep my strongest side against the enemy. Its just with no damage mitigation as pure Tactical (keep in mind I'm like, lvl 9 atm..) I'm currently a glass canon. So attempting to solo a K'T'inga can be hard.

Guess Spoony didn't like it either

http://spoonyexperiment.com/2010/01/21/vlog-1-22-10/

Though his complaints are fully explained by the fact he didn't even get past the beta or the first 1/5th of the game. Sad that most people write a game off so quickly.
Yeah, it seems like all he did were a few sector patrols. He complains about it being about nothing but combat. There's entirely diplomatic missions thrown into those random sector missions. Escort a transport as it repairs some satellites (not exciting, but seemingly realistic thing for a starfleet ship to do in the Star Trek universe).

He also didn't know how to set the game to solo mode. You just need to turn off auto-invites and the game sets the missions to single player mode. I've solo'd the entire game so far and I'm LC4 now (with some exceptions, like the amazing, amazing fleet action missions and the few I did with my buddy).

Best mission ever.

I have to go to the past, rescue the enterprise from the Klingon dude that went through the portal before and stop him from altering the future. Good shit here guys, this is how a quest chain is done.

Around what level is that? All I'm getting are patrols.
I'm level 6 so only LT right now, but I do get away missions and such. Check your communicator and see what missions are available. Lots of chain mission usually have some away missing.

I dunno, I'm thinking I'll wait another few months and see how full launch goes. Champions didn't really grab me, though I can see it getting much better with a little more time and development to tweak.

Cryptic seems to have a tendency to release much earlier than they should because they can fix it post-release in patches.

OMG That is awesome!

And just when I thought the original series fan wankery could not get any radder:

Is that what I think it is? Holy shit!

Alright, going in to end this shit here and now.

FUCK!

I think I broke my ship

Here's a little more of the last mission to show how fucking cool it is.

Hey friend Federation heavy battleship whom's class I can't remember, YOU CAN DO IT!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a feeling there are a lot of stuff that might not show on Beta. Heck, there is still a whole Borg class out there (which will be limited to those lifer accounts for now) the Klingon is finally open to people. It will be interesting to see all the release content :)
