The EPIC WIN Thread 3: SON OF EPIC

Great!

Well anyway, last night I got together with a Czech friend of mine and a bunch of her buddies at a music bar in old town Prague. It turned out to be a birthday party for her! She hadn't told me ahead of time because she didn't want me to feel obligated to bring a gift, but there we had balloons and cake and noise makers. The DJ had some issues with transitions between songs but his playlist was amazing. I've become used to hearing the same playlist at every single nightclub whenever I go out but I don't think he played a single song that you'd hear at a more mainstream club. He started the night with some disco and dance music then segued to oldies and rock n' roll, touching some 90's pop and alternative before going back to more old rock. There was everything from Elvis to Ricky Martin to the Beatles to Bon Jovi.

Most of the group left between 1:30 and 2:00 but I ended up sticking around with three others. One of them kept feeding me absinthe and Red Bulls so I was feeling pretty good. With most of our group gone, we found a couple of cute ladies to dance with which resulted in some super fun make-outs for me.

Eventually I wandered back through Wenceslas Square, noshing on a schnitzel sandwich from a street vendor while I waited for the night tram quite happy and very drunk. Pavla, the girl I danced/made out with, asked for my Skype info so I gave it to her. If she messages me, great! If not, no big deal. It was great to see my friend after so long and I had a really great night.

Three awesome things this week:

1) The kitty we're fostering, who has been super-shy for our entire time with him (almost two months now), came up and sniffed my hand this morning and pulled my finger to his mouth with his paw. This is HUGE progress, since when we first got him he was so terrified he wouldn't even come out from under the bed.

2) LucidChart, in conjunction with Google, had a contest in January. My girlfriend and I collaborated on a flowchart, were selected as winners, and won two Cr-48 Google Laptops--that arrived today! VERY happy, especially since my current laptop is on its last legs.

3) I spoke to the head of the lab I'm working in, and it's official: I will be doing my Ph.D. on the underlying mechanisms of several psychiatric diseases, and will have an AWESOME mentor to work with.

That's awesome man. It's all about the lab atmosphere. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. A good P.I. will make your Ph.D. experience a whole lot nicer.

I'm sure some will scoff at this news, but I am pretty happy and it's EPIC to me:

My girlfriend and step-son have moved back in with me. After a 9 month break, we resume our 8yr relationship living together. It felt so good to have her home, knowing that it wasn't for another temporary visit. My life feels complete again. My family feels whole. My son was so happy to know that his brother won't be leaving again in a few days, their sister was glad to have her other brother back. I'm just so happy it's ridiculous.

EPIC WIN! I was informally told I will receive a formal job offer early next week. It is at a university close to all of my family and some of my wife's family. This summer and this fall are going to be times of HUGE changes!! Goodbye Minnesota, hello Oregon! Wooohooo!!!

That's awesome news MindDetective! I'm so glad to hear it, I hope to one day land a similar type of luck/reward for my future work.

Congrats MD! Minnesota will miss you buddy :(

My win: We had a face and PA melting rock show last night. Super awesome. My wifes win: She just found out she passed her licensing exam to become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist! This is HUGE news!

Congrats to all three of you! :D I am terrified of the time when I have to take that exam. It's years away, but I still think about it.

She studied like a FREAK for it WP. Seriously, she earned her grade. We actually took a pretty hard income hit so she could focus on the test. It worked though, her and her entire study group blew the state average out of the water.

So after months of training, several cracked ribs, and 11 hours of even more intense than usual training over 4 days I finally got my second black belt in Shotokan Karate. Had sunday off to relax and recover a bit, now I'm off to my regular training. Can almost guarantee that I will be one of the only students who graded to turn up. Big sooks!

So you are moving to Oregon huh? That means you are going to be within a days driving distance so you are on my list of people I can torment!

I got orders to Ft. Myer, VA. I will be serving with the presidents escort, also known as the Old Guard! If I play my cards right I could have the chance to walk the mat and guard the Tomb of the Unknowns. The reason this is epic for me is, aside from possibly being selected to guard, each soldier in the Old Guard has to pass a screening, and it will increase my chances of being promoted.

Sweet! An Old Guard?!? Congrats, man!

Yes, good luck!

An update on my own Epic Win: I received the formal offer today. The salary is higher than expected but the start up costs (for moving and equipment) was skimpy. I have another interview scheduled that I am less interested in but that is very, very interested in me. I have to toe the line a little between trying to bargain for more equipment costs in the first offer and treating the upcoming interview site fairly. It is giving me butterflies.

Minor one with an explanation. Primary care doc tells me in October that I have two choices: start taking regular anti-cholesterol medication right then or lose 50 lbs (and keep it off) by next October. The way he says it, he knows I'll end up on the meds, not because he doesn't have faith in me personally, but because he's seen it a hundred times.

Well, we're 5 and a half months in with no meds, and I'm down 25 lbs.

6.5 months and 25 pounds to go, and I feel great!

My wife bought me a skydiving package for my birthday this year. In late April, I will be jumping out of a plane high above Vegas. WOO!
