[Gaming] Tragic the Garnering

I can point you to some places that will print incredible, near impossible to distinguish from the real thing proxies for about $1.50 a card.
Oh, I know. And I may have a proxy put together someday of my favorite abuse deck just for grins, but it's just not a high priority.

So I bought the Necron deck. I found it for 80 bucks at an LGS and that's the cheapest it will ever be.

Now I want to proxy out some replacement cards for the deck. Here are some I've already done (I need to fix the stamp and rarity icon on a bunch).

So this guy:

Doesn't have a fucking single iota of official art. None by Games Workshop, none by Forge World, none by fans, no one.

So I just did a cheap photoshop cutout and used a filter to make it look sort of arty. I'm not a graphic guy so my ability with these is limited. So this is what I ended up with:

Lol, glad I got to use Card Conjurer twice before Wizards, now in the game of printing and selling their own useless proxies have gone after them.

While I'd like to get all three of the others, the only other deck I REALLY want is the Chaos deck.

Is there an MSRP anymore? I fucking hate that WOTC did away with it.

There's no "true" MSRP, but you can usually go by whatever the big box stores put on them, which makes the MSRP $49.99/deck USD

Man, my buddy on a trip to Arizona for some work thing saw them in Target for 73 bucks a piece (which I think was like 110 Canadian).

Oh rad! She's a Panharmonicon with legs.....oh....rad....she's a Torpor Orb.....with legs. This will be fun to play against exactly never.

Holy shit, that is an actual fortune if even some of it is salvageable.

Each one of those boxes is 600+ dollars.

Most likely scrapped as a result of an accident with the cargo container. Insurance writes off the entire load regardless of the contents.

Ok, been out of this game a while and glad to it since it's just become the Hasbro and Friends IP Power Hour.

Look at this corporate bullshit Fallout deck face cards. Look at all these classic characters chosen to represent the last 26 years of Fallout.

You remember The Wise Mothman right? Oh you didn't play Fallout 76? Idiot.

How about the 4th most interesting villain from Fallout New Vegas?

You remember your father's assistant from Fallout 3, you know, the Dr that has 7 minutes of screen time and dialog. EDIT - I have been informed that she plays a much more major role in Fallout 4. My bad on this one. Fallout 4 is such dogshit that I never actually played out it's story.

The only one that makes a fucking modicum of sense.

The power creep of Magic man.

And most people think he's a bomb in limited and will see basically no play in standard.

4 mana 8/4 that can grant multiple combats.

Magic: The Gathering fans push volunteers out with alleged threats of violence

"Alleged threats over banned cards in Commander, Magic: The Gathering’s most popular mode of play, have driven its governing body to relinquish control of the format. Going forward, publisher Wizards of the Coast will itself be wholly responsible for Commander, which had previously been managed by the five-member, all-volunteer Commander Rules Committee. The announcement was made Monday in separate statements by the Commander Rules Committee and Wizards of the Coast."

“As a result of the threats last week against RC members, it has become impossible for us to continue operating as an independent entity,” the Commander RC said in a statement published to X. “Given that, we have asked WotC to assume responsibility for Commander and they will be making decisions and announcements going forward.”

So being heavy into EDH (which is the nerdy way of saying commander format) I have thoughts on this, as well as unfounded conspiracy theories.

For those not in the know, just a few days ago the rules committee that makes up the 5 member volunteer body that runs the official rules for commander format announced, after several years of having no bans, 4 cards that were to be banned from the format immediately. One of them everyone knew was going to be banned because it was broken, and one had long been on the list as being 'watched' that people thought might get a ban one day or another, but the other two are some of the most powerful cards in the format and some of the most expensive cards in the format, one of which was made solely for commander.

Now, while I don't think these specific cards needed a ban and I enjoy playing with very powerful cards, it's why I play EDH where this is the only place I can play those cards, I do agree that the format is healthier having them gone, but disagree with the rip the bandaid off method of a ban out of nowhere. Lots of people paid a lot of money for these cards and they suddenly became worthless, which is why so many people were upset. Obviously people shouldn't be doing death threats, but it's the internet.

Here's my conspiracy theory. The Rules Committee has said that they told Wizards of the Coast about these upcoming bans more than a year ago. And during that year, WotC has put out many sets using these exact cards as the top end chase cards to get people to buy those sets. In fact they just had their big secret lair "convention in a box" where people could spend several hundreds of dollars to receive a special box of cards and other prizes from the most recent mtg convention, in which special printings of these very cards were the prize. There were people opening their prize boxes and getting these cards on the same day they were banned.

My conspiracy level 1 brain says that, knowing these cards were going to be banned, WotC pushed these cards hard to sell as many of them as they could before they became worthless.

Conspiracy level 2 says they pushed these cards hella hard knowing that the banning would be an even more feelsbad moment and push the community against the RC, giving WotC a chance to take over the format and appear the good guy. (spoiler: they are in no way the good guy)

And after making millions on these cards pushing them right before the ban, only for their value to crash post banning, just wait to watch those prices jump up HIGHER THAN EVER once WotC announces their unbanning.

Cool part, most of the vitriol was aimed at an RC member who was against the banning. Guess what makes them special.

WOTC wants Commander to become a rotating format like they've slaughtered Modern into.

Nothing makes sadder than 'top-down designed for Commander'

I made proxies for my Necron deck. They turned out awesome. My buddy surprised me with a custom Theros symbol full arts in Necron style.

There's about 30 total.

I know I’m way late to the Commander bannings, but I want to add to Frank’s conspiracy thinking.

Personally, I think WotC wanted control of the RC from minute one, but deferred to Sheldon as the creator held in very, very high regard by the EDH community. It was an outreach and PR move. Once it took off, they wanted it bad, but had locked themselves into that situation - not as ironclad as the Reserved List, but similar enough to cause a big backlash.

When Sheldon died, they saw their opportunity. They knew this ban was coming, but print runs can be planned and set up to a couple YEARS in advance. Wizards and the RC had every opportunity to warn the playerbase this was coming. The RC was far less public since Sheldon’s passing, having no definitive spokesperson and public face. Wizards had incentive to say nothing because their chief objective is to sell cards.. Nobody predicted the level of threats and harassment over this, though. I think Wizards wanted to sort of let the RC’s influence fade, which would have been more likely with Sheldon gone. This disaster just gave them an opportunity.

Not specifically MTG-related news, but something new to think about any time you see "unsearched" or "NFS" CCG materials advertised for sale online.
