Video Game News and Miscellany

Really, I am probably getting one eventually, but my son just got a limited edition Smash Brothers XL, so he has no hope of upgrading. ;)

I haven't bought a 3DS yet, so I'll likely finally cave to get one of these. I have Xenoblade on Wii and the system is plugged into my computer monitor, but being able to play on the go is tasty.

Nintendo had a new Nintendo Direct video today. Among the various game trailers and amiibo news, they have announced that Wii titles will now be part of the Virtual Console, with such titles able to be activated without having to go into the Wii menu. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the first of these titles, just released today. If you're in North America, then the next Wii virtual console titles will be Punch-Out!! on January 22nd and Metroid Prime Trilogy on January 29th. Wii titles will cost 20 dollars normally and be half off for the first week they are out.

Welp, Nintendo wants all the money. Nintendo might just get all the money. Very tempted by the Monster Hunter edition.

They also announced new Amiibo sculpts for Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and a brand new Toad, who you might recall is NOT in Smash. Methinks they saw the frenzy and decided to keep going with the figures. Now, they just need to produce plenty of Wave 4: Robin, Lucina, Wario, Pac-Man, Ness, and Charizard. Yeah, there's a few I want from that list.

Some of the Amiibo news is stupid though. For instance, if you've been using a Mario Amiibo for Smash Bros, and want to use the same Amiibo for Mario Party 10, you'll have to delete the Smash info from that Amiibo first, erasing everything you've done with its digital character. That's garbage.

On the other hand, dropping Fire Emblem characters in Codename Steam looks like a lot of fun. Hell, that whole game looks like a lot of fun.

And speaking of Fire Emblem, the Direct started with announcing a new title in the series for 3DS, but I feel like we all forgot it because Nintendo kept dropping info. Within a single week in February, New 3DS, Monster Hunter 4, and Majora's Mask 3D. That month will see the second wave of Amiibos, a free Pokemon puzzle game for download ... honestly it's more than I can keep track of.

It's also completely fucked up my game-getting schedule. Iwata made a big deal about North America not being ready for the New 3DS, then bam, two months later, it's coming. Kind of annoying. I just bought a gelaskin for my current 3DS and wouldn't have had I known. I wouldn't even be going for the New 3DS right now, except Monster Hunter 4 is apparently going to use Smash Bros-levels of CPU. Better to get it out of the way and save myself $20.

Hrm...Im REALLY having a hard time deciding if a new 3DS XL is really worth it...

Really depends on what it can do for you. Since you don't have the Wii U anymore (ya loser), maybe it would benefit your 3DS Smash Bros?

My wife and I and planning to play a few hundred hours of Monster Hunter together, so it's worth it for us.

Meh, I think I'm done with Smash Bros. I think all those years I had fun with the previous ones was due to actually playing with my brother. Playing alone, or even online doesn't have the same effect. I still play it on occasion, and I wouldn't call it a bad game (it's good), but I don't have the same excitement over it.

I may get it just for the new Fire Emblem though. I'm STILL playing Awakening.

I'm also still kind of weirded out that it still has the same resolution. May be one of those things I wait on for a while to see if it's everything promised.

As for the Wii U, I don't really have any regrets. I may get one at some point for certain games like starfox and zelda, but I just couldnt have it as my only system and be happy with it. In fact, a lot of people call it a "secondary system". At least with the PS4, I'm going to get to play games that I would struggle running on my laptop, and PS + with its free games every month is keeping me happy.

That's a ton of garbage. I have two words for Nintendo "cloud storage".

Went to Gamestop. The Monster Hunter 4 New 3DS is also sold-out. I didn't think it would be, but I guess people cared about that one too.

Oh well. Black for me, red for wife, we'll get gelaskins eventually. Kinda sucks though.

Slight correction to my earlier post: those first Wii titles games I mentioned will be the ones at half-off. Here's hoping Nintendo starts doing more with eShop sales in the future.

Pretty much same; I think my joy came from playing with my siblings, and my wife hates Smash Bros. I'm pondering trading in the Wii U version (stuck with the 3DS one since it's a download).

I'm not even sure I'm going to get Evolve--in the same idea, my love of Left 4 Dead was based on a good online community, something I don't know if the PS4 has.

Now I'm wondering if we should just store out petty cash for now, put up with shitty load times for Monster Hunter 4 (that's really what's weighing the expediency of getting the New 3DS) and waiting for future special versions to come out, though what those might be, I have no idea. Really had my heart set on MH4U bundle.[DOUBLEPOST=1421366585,1421366427][/DOUBLEPOST]

Actually, they've done a few. In late 2013, they had week-long sales per character (Mario week, Megaman week, etc.). In September 2014, they did weeks based on groups of characters. Pretty much all of their core series got decent sales on good items, (i.e. all Zelda games, all Mario games, etc.). They've gotten the hang of it; they're just not doing it frequently. Doing it frequently can devalue the product. Look at Atlus--their games are amazing, but they do sales every other month, so no one but their ardent fans are going to bother buying their stuff full-price knowing it's going to drop pretty fast and often.

Except Atlus gets people to buy full price by doing extra stuff. The only reason a lot of people bought Persona Q and the most recent Persona 4 Arena is because they wanted the official tarot deck that only came with first editions.

Atlus knows damn well what it is doing.

On the physical side, yes. But the digital versions get those sales bi-monthly and the digital versions don't get those perks. The reason I don't have a ton of Atlus memorabilia around my house is because I largely get the digital versions so I can have them to play whenever/wherever. Granted, I buy those digital versions full price, but I'm an Atlus fanboy.

I may be able to get one Monster Hunter New 3DS. Will have to discuss first with wife.

In other news, got an email from Nintendo--I have Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate demo codes! I have two spare to give out, so is anyone here wanting one? I forget who here plays.

I'll take one, my brother loves the series, I'm sure he'd kill to give the new one a try.

If you still have another one, I'll take it. I've never played the series before. Maybe its worth the investment.
Sent! All out of codes. I recommend glancing at some beginner tips in case this demo is as merciless as the last one's demo (which was not a great representation of the game). Unlike MH3's demo, this one is multi-player, can be played with people local or online.

Another starship strategy game, this time by Sid fuckin' Meier.

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/firaxis-reveals-new-interstellar-strategy-game-sid/1100-6424728/

I await this one dick in hand.
Sid Meier's Pirates! ...in SPACE - YES PLEASE
Sid Meier's FTL ....but better - Sure!
Sid Meier's Spore: the Space Bit - ehhh.....
Sid Meier's cross connectivity with Beyond Earth to restart interest in that game and bahblah co-op blah.... - boooh!

Admittedly, it's Sid Meier's Whatever, so I'll play it, like it, love it, lose interest in it after some 100 hours because I don't have the time or interest to multiplayer ,and start all over again with the inevitable expansion.

It's something 2K is touting, I have zero doubt that it's something throwaway that was mandated from the publisher to the developer that they will put zero effort into and will amount to zilch.

I have good hopes of that. I've seen good/great games destroyed by that kind of rubbish, but usually with a different publisher/developer balance of power (think Sim City for example). Here, yes, I do agree that it probably won't be too crappily implemented or forced down our throats :) As I said, I'd give it a...95% probability of being one of the few 2015 games I'll play in 2015.

Now I'm even more conflicted.

I don't really care about a lot of that extra stuff--I don't get a nagging sensation that I'm "missing something" because I don't have the complete package of DLC for a game I may or may not still own by the end of the year. What is a problem for me is whether that extra stuff is going to give some players an edge over others. You don't need to have the Behemoth content to learn how to deal with a Behemoth when playing as a hunter, but does the Behemoth get perks that other monsters don't, for which you'll need DLC hunters to deal with? That's the issue for me.

At the same time, I've been watching beta videos and both monster and hunter side look like a lot of fun. I'm seeing people use the kinds of tactics I've visualized and seeing it work. You're expected to play smart on both sides, and to work together as the hunters. Even if I don't find cool people to play with on PSN, I could still enjoy playing as a monster since that's more on the solitary side anyway. But considering the intent to continue building on Evolve with more and more DLC, how far does it stretch before it feels like a sequel came out that you didn't download?

Square-Enix has adapted this model for Theatrhythm Curtain Call, stating an intent to keep making DLC an add it to the game. But since the game came with around 250 songs to start with, I don't mind that I've spent probably the game's value in DLC (or near to it) at this point. Plus, each thing is $1. Using a base game as a foundation for future content is fine if it's reasonably priced. $15 per playable character feels excessive.
