Video Game News and Miscellany

The trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's 3 is out. Here's the set-up: "Thirty years after Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza closed it’s doors, the events that took place there have become nothing more than a rumor and a childhood memory, but the owners of “Fazbear’s Fright: The Horror Attraction” are determined to revive the legend and make the experience as authentic as possible for patrons, going to great lengths to find anything that might have survived decades of neglect and ruin.

At first there were only empty shells, a hand, a hook, an old paper-plate doll, but then a remarkable discovery was made…

The attraction now has one animatronic."

Five nights at Freddy's 1 came out less than six months ago. Goddamn.

Not sure if we already did this and I missed it, or this should be a separate thread, or whatever, but I'm curious: what're the games you're most looking forward to in 2015?

2015, for me, holds:
Pillars of Eternity
Torment: Tides of Numenera
Heroes of Might & Magic VII
The Witcher 3
Total War: Attila
And I might actually try and play all of these this year. That would mean it’s the first year since…2007 I think, that I’ve played more than 1 game in the year it came out – I have a perpetual backlog, but these are all on the “will get priority” list. I’m not entirely sure I’ll have time to play all of these, even…Oh well.

I mean, EQ1 and 2 are still going, so there's that. Also EQ Next and I would think Planetside 2.

Also also holy shit EQ1 is still getting xpacs, they're up to 21.

Club Nintendo's close-out rewards went up, including 117 games and a few new items.

I put down 800 coins for the Majora's Mask messenger bag. There are actually some retail games, not just eshop and VC titles. I'll probably get The Wonderful 101 as well.

Left 4 Sigmar?

Fatshark announces Warhammer: End Times Vermintide, a new co-op first-person shooter/brawler set in the end-times of the Warhammer universe (we were hoping for something more reality-based after mistakenly reading this as "Warhammer: End Times Verisimilitude" at first). This is expected in the second half of this year for Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. A new website is now live, offering details on the game and an announcement teaser trailer with a look at some cinematics. Here's word:
Independent developer Fatshark announced today the development of Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide, a co-operative action first person shooter and melee combat adventure set in the End Times of the iconic Warhammer Fantasy universe. Vermintide is scheduled for release in the second half of 2015, for Windows PC, the Xbox One, all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft via the ID@Xbox self-publishing program, and PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system.

In Vermintide, the city of Ubersreik is under siege as players select from a band of five heroes with different play-styles and abilities, all equipped with unique gear and personalities. Working together cooperatively, players must use their individual attributes to survive an apocalyptic invasion from hordes of relentless, power hungry Skaven, across a range of environments stretching from the top of the Magnus Tower to the bowels of the Under Empire.

“Combining gritty combat with cooperative multiplayer action, Vermintide will provide the player with a completely new perspective of the Warhammer Fantasy universe, through the eyes of the heroes they play,” said Martin Wahlund, CEO of Fatshark. “Staying true to the fantasy lore, with familiar foes and locations, we look forward to winning the hearts of enthusiasts and newcomers with this new take on the Warhammer story”.

The time of mortals is ending, and the reign of Chaos draws ever closer. The Dark Gods are at last united in a singular purpose, loosing their madness across the world as never before. In the Empire of Sigmar, Karl Franz's gaze is focused on the incursion of the savage northmen, but it is not the only threat. As the Chaos moon Morrslieb waxes full, shrill voices echo through tunnels gnawed far beneath the Empire's cities, and a Skaven host swarms towards the surface. It emerges first in the city of Ubersreik, a screeching mass that consumes all before it. Soon Ubersreik is a charnel-town, drowning beneath the malevolent shadow of the Horned Rat.

Yet even in the darkest times, there are always champions to light the way. As Ubersreik cowers, five heroes, united by capricious fate, carry the fight to the rat-men. It remains to be seen whether they have the strength to survive, let alone work together long enough to thwart the invaders. One truth, however, is beyond all doubt: should these five fall, then Ubersreik will fall with them.

I didn't know this before, but a video from DC spelled out that Batman Arkham Knight is claiming the Scarecrow will be the central villain. (Yeah, and the villain of City was Hugo Strange, and Black Mask was behind Origins... uh-huh.)

Really, I want there to be someone behind all this besides the Joker, but they might as well just hang a lampshade on it at this point.

"Bwahahahaha! It was me all along guano-for-brains! I bet you didn't expect to see me again Bats. The Scarecrow has been nothing but my dupe all along!"

"I was wondering when you'd show your face, Joker."

"Dupe? You stupid clown, I invited you to dinner last week to discuss plans. You RSVPed!"

"Even Grundy knew it was scary-funnyman."

Yeah, I really, really, REALLY hope there's no Joker this time around. Much as I love him, let's give the spotlight to the Scarecrow for a change.

Also, even though Hugo Strange was one of the big villains for City, they did advertise Joker had returned, too. So him being in it wasn't that much a surprise.

Origins spoilers:

While Black Mask being the Joker all along was kinda... meh, I enjoyed the performance of their incarnation of the Joker. Seeing the relationship form between him and Batman was one of the few redeeming values of that game.

I didn't get that far before I uninstalled the game. I just couldn't play it. It wasn't remotely as polished as the other two.

Watch this cutscene. It occurs right after Batman and he meet for the first time.

Can I just say I love the voice acting in this clip? Troy Baker does an excellent version of Mark Hamill's Joker voice, and you can also hear Tara Strong gradually transforming Dr. Quinzel into Harley Quinn.

All of the voice cast did a great job. The game has some serious problems, and I certainly don't fault Nick for not wanting to complete it, because it offers nothing over City, but the voicework was all pretty top notch.

Persona 5:

I have to say, this looks fun as fuck.
Oh man, that looks fantastic. I'm surprised to see the character having such dynamic movement, but then I've only played the handheld games, where you're practically a cursor in most places. Music's great, style's great, even the menu's look vibrant and exciting.

So I take it they're using masks now, which is cool, and possibly keeping the "you meet your own Shadow" thing from Persona 4, judging by the end of the trailer. Looking forward to this very much.

I've only played about 3/4 of P3FES, never got a chance to play 4, unfortunately. I might see if I can snag it on Amazon or something since my PS2 is connected to my comp monitor anyway.

Well, 3/4 of FES is still finishing the main game, right? :p Since the FES content added afterward is another 30 hours or so.

I ended up just watching the anime for 4, and even watching it I could tell I was missing out on a great game, so I'd still recommend finding the game if PS2 games don't look too terrible on your TV.

I might have been less than that, then. I just remember not liking that, in order to really beef up my party, I had to adhere to a pretty strict schedule of how I spent the days before getting into the dungeon.

4 looks a little more lenient in that regard, and Amazon's got it listed for PS2 for a whopping 16 bucks, so I might snag that.

I highly recommend Persona 4. You do indeed have more lee-way in terms of schedule, and you also have more possibilities (things to do, personas to fuse, all that good stuff). Plus, you have direct control over your entire party this time around, instead of the just the main character.

And hell, at $16, that's a steal.
