Video Game News and Miscellany

I only clicked around the video but that is exactly the game I want pumped into my veins now that we're never getting the second half of Mankind Divided because Square Enix fucking sucks shit.

This looks phenomenal. The world feels fully realized, as I'd expect from CD Projekt Red.

That said, I hope there are more options than direct action like gun play. Duck and cover shooting gets old for me fast, especially when the gameplay is largely comprised of that. If it's an RPG, I'd like more workaround options. Hacking a security system to take out goons for me, for example. Or more non-violent approaches like a charisma or diplomacy check. (Similar to Witcher 3 and using the Axii sign). That's something I liked in, say, Fallout New Vegas, where you could hack security or bots to do the dirty work for you. Or use mechanics skills, etc.

EDIT: Sorry, I wrote this while only watching half the video so far. I stand corrected. Looks like there is a LOT of freedom in choices, And the gunplay is VERY diverse. I love the different styles of bullets like the tracers and ricochets.

It looks like a modern day Deus Ex. Yes, I realize there's already a modern day Deus Ex, but this looks more like it than Deus Ex does. I'm sold.

Subnautica's expansion officially announced: Subnautica Below Zero

The pertinent points from the page:
  • It's a standalone expansion, not DLC. Sort of like Blue Shift and Opposing Force for Half-Life, or Episodes 1 and 2 for HL2.
  • It'll be released in early access in the coming months, and will be tweaked and developed based on early access feedback, much like the base game was.
  • It'll be set in an arctic biome on Planet 4546B (ie the same planet as the base game).
  • Thermal regulation may be part of the game, cause it's in a very cold setting.
  • The devs are looking into more voiced lines for the plot.
Also, there were rumors that the protagonist would be female this time, but so far nothing like that has been officially announced.

EDIT: They also have a Trello up for the expansion, but there are potential spoilers there, for both the base game and the expansion. For example:
Marguerit Maida may have survived the Deep Grand Reef base attack, and she may be the protagonist for the expansion.

What's going on in video games today?

Sees hundreds of people angrily discussing the removal of a puddle from one sequence shown in an early build of the new Spider-Man game done WELL BEFORE optimizations are made.

/closes web browser tab.

Personally cannot wait until next Friday. I wasn't buying it because of a damp alley.

Fuck GOOD.

This may give me what I wanted from Elite. Gimme some good dumb space cowboy story to follow. I really enjoyed Rebel Galaxy and it's nice to see them advancing so far from their humble beginnings.

From what I understand, this game came out of the Rebel Galaxy devs pitching an updated X-Wing to EA (and obviously being turned down because EA is fucking garbage and would rather just run the Star Wars license into the ground till Disney gets fed up).

I wonder what this means for both of them.
It means you're likely going to see more "pay to win" features slip into EVE. Black Desert Online is full of them.

Really though, I haven't forgiven CCP for fucking up the World of Darkness MMO on purpose to fix EVE after some failed expansions.

Well, this is unexpected:

I'm rather surprised anyone wants the Kingdoms of Amalur license, I thought it was a dead property, though I'm not sad to see that THQ Nordic has it. I really enjoyed KoA: Reckoning. I wonder if they'll do a remastered version, or if they'll press on with a new game in the universe.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles getting a remake for PS4 and Switch.

I'm kind of happy? The original version of the game was CRIPPLED by it's hardware requirements (4 GBAs, 4 GBA-to-Gamecube cables, etc.) but was otherwise a beautiful and fun game with one of the single best soundtracks in the entire series. Giving us online play can only make the experience better!
