Video Game News and Miscellany

Fallout 3 on Steam has been patched to remove GFWL.

The bad news is that it's broken compatibility with some mods, including Fallout Script Extender.

Three years after its servers ceased, eight years after it stopped selling games, 14 years since its reign of terror started, and Games for Windows Live is still managing to cause problems for gamers.
Are... are the FOSE guys still active? Are they going to be updating FOSE to be compatible with the new FO3 executable?

"2021-10-12 update (if you are seeing CRC = D32E228B errors): Bethesda has released an update labeled 1.7.0.4 on Steam. This does two things: removes GFWL, and updates the compiler to VS2019. I do not have a timeframe for when FOSE can be updated to this new version. " - FOSE website

New trailer for Gotham Knights

If it wasn't an online multiplayer looter shooter ala Borderlands, I'd probably have been interested in this. But it's just not a gameplay style I've ever cared for. Even when similar mechanics are done in single player games like later Assassin's Creed games (like where a backstab isn't an immediate kill on an enemy because their level is too high or other things).

EDIT: Edited to put proper link in.

Gotham Knights will have offline single-player.

It's still going to have looter shooter (or looter brawler) mechanics. Enemy levels, picking up scraps or whatever to level up your character, etc. It very much looks and feels like Borderlands looting mechanics, but with Arkham gameplay. And that just doesn't interest me.

EDIT: And I should say that just because a game primarily built with multiplayer in mind has a single player option, that's not always a win for me. I tried playing Borderlands by myself and was just bored of it. And just to be clear, since I've argued this before: this is how I personally feel about these kinds of games. If you're a fan of them, all power to you. But I didn't care for Borderlands or other looter shooter/brawler games. Nor did I care for the looter system of Assassin's Creed Odyssey. They say you can play solo with Avengers, too. And the gameplay footage we've seen of Gotham Knights just gives me similar vibes.

Meanwhile, second trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League dropped. Still no gameplay, which makes me wonder why they're not showing any.

Valve is really going all out for the Steam Deck:

Half-Life 2 is getting an update that's going to improve it's support for widescreen resolutions, HUD scaling, it's getting Vulkan support, and other fixes that are underway.

Okay, yeah, what is with the 'cards' I get on Steam? I've noticed them over the years but I genuinely don't know what they are/do
If you get a full set, you can use them to make a badge for your profile. Otherwise, you can sell them to people who want badges for their profiles at like 4-10 cents a card.

Gas is refering to how you need to farm "cards" (read: abilities) to make viable builds to do harder content in Back 4 Blood, where as Left 4 Dead simply required you to be good at the game's mechanics.

As a visual example to back up what Ash said about the collectible cards being turned into profile badges:

You got me curious, and on looking, my steam account will be old enough to vote this year.

Would I want to play the previous God of War games? I have it on good authority that there are boobs.
my step sons had this game...I think I played about a half an hour one day, and in that short time, I ended up in some mini-game cutscene thing where I had to use the thumb sticks on the game controller to expertly and deftly roll some topless lady's nipples. It was kind of ridiculous.

SOLD!

All action happens off screen, though the sound is very... evocative.

I've played all the GoW games except for the last one, and greatly enjoyed them all. Over the top action/puzzle things.

The next game by ConcernedApe, the maker of Stardew Valley is called Haunted Chocolatier:

More info from hauntedchocolatier.net:

Hey everyone,

After dedicating 10 years of my life to Stardew Valley (and counting), the time has finally come to announce my next game.

It’s called “ConcernedApe’s Haunted Chocolatier”.

Why chocolate? I’m not sure. It just kind of came to me. I think sometimes the best ideas just appear in a flash, instead of being cleverly thought out. That’s how I like to work, anyway. What’s important is the execution. And after 10 years of practice, I feel more confident than ever in being able to bring an idea to life.

Regardless, I think a lot of people like chocolate.

In Stardew Valley, the focus was more humble: living off the land, growing food, and connecting to the people and nature around you. However, with my next game, I wanted to explore more fantastical possibilities… experiences that take you beyond the ordinary. That’s where magical haunted ghost chocolate comes in.

Chocolate represents that which is delightful. The haunted castle represents the allure of the unknown. The ghosts represent the imprint of the past. All of these things are important. However, don’t think for a moment that, because this game features ghosts in a haunted castle, it is an evil or negative game. On the contrary, I intend for this game to be positive, uplifting and life-affirming. However, if Stardew Valley mostly channeled the energy of the sun, Haunted Chocolatier channels the energy of the moon. Both are vital.

More important than all that, I just want to make a fun game.

Now, you might be scratching your head, wondering exactly what type of game this is. I’m not sure how best to describe it. It’s evolving organically as I develop it, so I’m not sure where it will go. But at its core, the gameplay loop involves gathering ingredients, making chocolate, and running a chocolate shop. Of course, there’s a lot more to the game than that, but I don’t want to get too deep into at this early stage, partly because I don’t want to be tied down to any particular concept of what the game is.

So far, I’ve been having fun working on this game. There are so many possibilities. With Stardew Valley, I felt somewhat constrained, because I was working within an established tradition. I don’t regret that at all, but there’s always been a part of me that wanted to go “unleashed”. I believe this will be a good opportunity, but I haven’t even gotten to the good stuff yet. I’ve been mostly working on the “meat and potatoes” of the game so far. But what really brings a game to life is the spice, the sauce. And I haven’t really gotten to the sauce yet. That’s coming.

Anyway, this is all largely talk at this point. While the video I put together may look like the game is at an advanced stage of development, there is still a ton of stuff to do. And the way I work, things often don’t come together until the final moments. I tend to work with a “vertical slice” approach, and so it’s easy to put together some video that looks like a finished game. But there is a ton of content I still need to make. So, please understand that it will be a while before this game is done. I’m going to be working on it as much as I can, though.

Thanks for reading all this,

-Ape
