What are you playing?

Finished my first playthrough of Jedi: Fallen Order. Long story short, loved it.

The gameplay felt nicely satisfying. I've actually never played any souls-like games before, nor do I play many Metroidvania games, but on the whole the concepts and gameplay were easy enough to pick up. Exploration was generally interesting, with varied environments and interesting locations to visit. Combat was visceral and fun, with the game really letting me feel like a proper Jedi (I got to use a lightsaber! ^________________^). The visuals were also quite nice, with spectacular vistas on the various planets. The cutscenes were also impressive, with some of the best lightsaber choreography I've seen.

The story and characters were good. Story-wise, when I thought about it a bit, it felt somewhat like nothing of true value was accomplished, but then again the real meat of the story is the development of characters like Cal, Cere, and Trilla. Side characters like Greez, Merrin, Cordova etc were also given distinct personalities and satisfying stories. I already had the ending spoiled for me, so I knew that... he... shows up, but playing through that sequence still managed to terrify me a bit.

What I was really, really impressed by, though, was the use of music. The Star Wars movies have always had iconic tunes. The game uses them sparingly, but when recognizable music shows up, oh man the emotional punch is amazing. From the classic Force theme when Jedi-related stuff is happening, to the Order 66 music playing during the corresponding scene, the music added so much to the experience.

All in all, this was a very good game, and I definitely should've played it sooner.

Also Merrin is hot and her accent is adorable.
I would argue that fallen order is the perfect Indiana Jones game, where you search for relics from lost civilizations before the space Nazis can get them.

And then chop the relic in half with a lightsaber.
Technically speaking, the Holocron wasn't a relic. It was just a USB drive stashed away by Cordova. He just happened to be an archeology nerd that hid it behind relics.

I can understand how people can feel deflated by this ending, but I actually love it and think it's one of the few story beats that get what the Jedi philosophy is shown to represent. I'm at work or I'd go into a big long diatribe, just be warned that I still might, later...
