What are you playing?

I played the free browser game a while ago, so I've actually been wanting to play it for a while. Plus, Metroidvania style games are like crack to me.

I'm trying so hard to play The Last of Us, but I am bad enough at PC shooters without trying to play one on a console. ;)

After discussing with some friends how the FPS genre is going backwards in game design (inspired by a recent TotalBiscuit video) I decided to make great use of the summer sale, picking up Duke Nukem 3D from steam, and One Unit Whole Blood (using the package name because just Blood isn't that descriptive) from GoG.

Duke is as awesome as ever, but I'd never actually played (or heard of) Blood before. This amazing FPS from 3DRealms and Monolith has you assuming the role of a resurrected death cultist... or something, fighting against cultists that are out to kill you. Maybe. I haven't really gotten around to reading the story, which is in the manual, but just look at this old school fps goodness.

(note: a game called Blood is probably going to be bloody)
Blood was fun as hell for deathmatch with friends back in the day. It was probably the first game that you could set others on fire and then listen to them scream as they burned. If I recall correctly, the plot is you used to be the leader of this cult until they betrayed and murdered you, and years later you were brought back from the dead by the cult's dark god. You take your revenge on the new leaders of the cult, and then the dark god (I think it was Tschernobog or something like that) decides to kill you to "absorb your power" or something, and you end up having to fight him, too.

It's not you. The shooting sucks in that game. It's hard to aim properly when you have things zig-zagging at you that can kill you in one hit.

That said, it kind of feels like what shooting would really be like in such a situation. I try to sneak and use melee weapons as much as possible--The Last of Us really isn't exactly a shooter. Treating it like one is a good way to run out of ammo, because they seem to give out very little.

Playing the trial version of the new level5 game Layton bros for ios. It's a crime investigation game that combine 2d elements with searching for clues in a 3d crime scene featuring Prof. laytons son.

I've played through the first 4 cases and it's a decent game. Unfortunately there is zero replayability and it's reaaaaaaly easy so far.

Bought Witcher & Witcher 2 during the Steam sale. Haven't played yet. Highly considering the Saints Row The Third megapack ($15 for the game + shitload of DLC).

Tropico 4 was really just Tropico 3 with an expansion pack put on it. It was pretty shitty of them to charge full price for it, as if it were an actual sequel.

Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition

This is seriously fun, and I'm upset that I never learned of this before now. The board game version of this would have been awesome to play when I lived near a comic shop/game room.

Played some Shogun 2 and had to ALT + F4 out of the game in annoyance after 2 hours. Why the fuck does it need to be such a bitch of a game? I can't even make it through the tutorial. Here's why...

Multiple clan enemies for no reason. Umm thanks tutorial. I don't even know how to play the game yet and you put me up with continual enemies.

Also GG on no head's up and getting random attacks within a turn. There's no warning system at all? I guess every attack is a an ambush. NEVER SAW THAT HUGE FLEET COMING. NOOOPE. 1000 men walking in my province. Nope, no scouts.

This is bad.

ROTK had this right.

What's worse is that the combat scenarios don't even represent what is going on in the battle map. How the fuck is this even possible? I recruit specific spear and bow samurai and get stuck with peasants and sword cavalry and have shit to work with while I try to take on a castle. Cavalry taking on a castle. Get off horse. Weak as peasants.

The fuck is this game?

Also, can't even make money. Why? Because everything is locked. DO THIS. The game says. OK. Need money for that. Can't I just build a market? NO. DO THIS. Ummm. I have no money motherfucker. I got 4 cities. Let me build my shit. NOPE.

Oh, here some random attacks from clans who hate you for no reason. Diplomacy? Nope, locked.

WOW.

Going to try the game for real tomorrow. I didn't think I'd be stuck on such a badly done tutorial for 2+ hours.

And I'm able to finish Romance of the 3 Kingdoms 11 on the hardest difficulty.

I have a feeling the AI in this game cheats like it was made by Midway.

Finally playing Borderlands 2. I'm playing it with my wife currently. I'm playing a Mechromancer, and she the assassin. So far we are really enjoying our choices and the gameplay. It plays a lot more strongly than the original Borderlands, plus we're getting an absolute kick out of Handsome Jack.

Word of advice:
Finish the main story, then play the DLC in the order they were released, but don't go into true vault hunter mode, the game changes into -How many times can you get a second wind to kill a group of npcs?-

I just... okay, I just do not see the point of that being a term. If someone isn't transgender, you can just go ahead and use their gender, since that's how they identify.
It's usually used in a disparaging manner, almost exclusively.

Yeah, the little woman and I are going through true vault hunter mode, we're up to level 45, and there's a whole lot of helping each other back to our feet going on. We don't plan to start the DLC till we finish this second playthrough all the way.
I had wanted to let Lilith kill jack the first time we played, but the little woman's Deathtrap was out when the Warrior finally died, and Deathtrap insta-zapped him so he didn't even get to do is little pre-death screaming rant.

Cisgender does have a reason to exist, it's a more accurate term in the same way that transgender is. If you were to ask for example "Is she a transgendered woman?" You would reply "No, she's a woman." This then implies that a transgendered woman -isn't- a woman, even though that is how they identify.

Among certain vocal minorities, however, it has become nearly a slur, because people are stupid and will bicker over anything. And this is sadly true across all spectrum of people.

No, I'm sorry, that's fucking absurd. Transgender means someone who identifies with a gender other than their biological one, yes? Then it's a perfectly accurate term. Calling a transgender woman a transgender woman is accurate because they identify as a woman but biologically are not. You don't need a special term for people whose gender and biology are congruent. It just seems like saying that we need to call people who don't have any impairment in their limbs "quadrofunctional" to differentiate them from quadropalegics.

No, seriously, this is the though process I'm seeing. "Well, let's see. She identifies as a woman, she's biologically a woman, so let's come up with a new term because 'woman' just won't do for someone who is and thinks they are a woman."

So, while out on vacation last week, I bought Sniper Elite 2 for the PS3. I'm primarily using the thing now as a media server, and wanted to get some games for the thing.

I had some time to kill yesterday, and sat down to play--Gnomoria. Sniper Elite 2 is still in the shrink-wrap. heh.

Rant: Latest update killed the "grow farms underground" bug (which I didn't even know was a bug)..took me 2 seasons to get everything sorted out. Luckily, I had enough straw, food, and drink stockpiled that I avoided colony death.

Well, they also replaced it with actual "underground farm" designations that grow mushrooms...

Frankly, I think the most obvious change that games needs is to ditch the bandages in the startup kit in exchange for a single bone needle so you're not sitting there chanting "come on come on come on HAVE A BABY ALREADY YAKS SO I CAN KILL ONE OF YOU"

I've indulged more in the Steam Summer Sale, having now picked up Bastion, The Binding of Isaac and Retro City Rampage. I am enjoying them all thus far.

I picked up a ton of games during the sale and have started playing them.

Orcs Must Die 2: never played any of these. I love tower defense games and I REALLY want to like this game, bu the map layouts seem too small for any real pathing/traps, and there are usually 2 paths that can't overlap without using destroyable barricades. I'm going to keep playing it, but so far the maps are too small and too open.
