What are you playing?

Steamworld Dig: Finished it this morning. That was a fun final only boss fight. I wish there had been more. Maybe in the sequel. Overall the game was enjoyable and certainly worth the money. I'll probably play it again a while from now.

Project X Zone: This is really simple so far compared to the tactical RPGs I'm use to, but it's zany and fun. I shouldn't be so amused that they didn't bother to record English voice acting, so the whole thing is in Japanese.

I'm use to
PET PEEVE ACTIVATION!

Used to, not use to.

Holy crap, Virtue's Last Reward has a mechanic on the Flow screen I wasn't even aware of, but it's spoilery. But damn, is it awesome. This game is a step up from 999, which was a tough act to follow. I hope they continue the series.

I tried Marvel Heroes. It crashed three times before it finally started up. Eh. I don't know. Same old same old MMO stuff. It's not terrible, but not really stand-out either.

Picked up Dishonored a bit ago, been having trouble really getting into it. It's a well implemented game and all, but there's just something about it that doesn't grab me. I'll probably keep playing it and finish it eventually, but will likely trade it in after that.

I kind of get the same feeling from Dishonored. I can't even really say exactly what about it isn't grabbing my attention, but I too can't really get into it.

Yeah, I had the same problem. I played through the introduction level, got to the town or whatever, then went off to my first mission and it just went on too long that I didn't care about finishing it. I wound up selling the game back to EB Games.

It certainly has some fun mechanics, using the powers and shadows to get around and assassinate people for instance.

It just doesn't make me care about anyone in the game. I'm mostly playing to see what I can do next, not what happens to anyone next.

Path of Exile

I played this back when it was in open beta, and it just didn't click with me. The giant passive skill tree (1300 skills?!) was daunting, and the beginning of the game just didn't seem all that fun.

I gave it another try, took the time to explore that skill tree and plan out what I wanted to go down, and decided I was going to give it a solid 30 minutes to see if it could grab me. When you first begin, you can't do shit, and you feel weak and helpless. Without my knowledge, 30 minutes turned into 4 hours, I had crafted some really fun skills to use and gained a few of the passives I was looking for, and now I was slaying monsters with the best of them. If you liked Diablo 2, you really need to give this game a try. And it's free! Hella fun.

Guacamelee

I gained a magic luchadore mask, learned some super combos from a chicken, and gained some special powers from the king of goats. This game is amazing, you NEED to play it. Right now, go! Metroidvania in the truest sense, you explore around for secrets, gain new wrestling moves that allow you to gain access to new areas, navigate through some tight and really inventive platforming all while suplexing attacking skeletons and throwing enemies into other enemies. The art style and soundtrack are both great, which is just a huge plus to an already great game. It even has 2-player co-op, but unfortunately because it is made by a small indie developer, they were not able to include online multiplayer. Local only, which is a bummer. But the PC port does support fully remappable keys as well as full mod ability.

Virtue's Last Reward: I got new games for Christmas and yet I'm still playing this. I didn't expect that you have to do all the different play options to get the whole story. It's kind of crazy and yet I can't pull myself away despite having the new Zelda.

And less a playing so much as not playing, but I deleted Etrian Odyssey IV. I kept a save back-up and I can download it at any time, but I have a feeling this is the end. I almost never play it, whenever I do I feel like I'm forcing myself, and I always stop after 20 minutes, the time it takes for my team to need to return to home base and heal up. I also only play it on a whim, so ... I don't think the series is for me. I did have fun with what I did and made decent headway into the game.

Bought a new SD card though, 32 gigs.

Nintendo eshop cards + sales = ... well, less from eshop cards. But I got good stuff!

Project X Zone: This is a blast. Nothing at all like my usual tactical RPG experience, but damn it's fun and crazy.

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition: I have no idea what I'm doing, but after a half-hour I finally broke out of trying to play like it's Soul Calibur. This is rough and fast, but I can learn it. It was just nice to be able to challenge online opponents. I'll have to practice to better understand the game before getting into a particular character.

Mighty Switch Force: I've been waiting for this to hit a sale to try it. I love it. The switching really livens up the platforming. I've been enjoying it so much that I bought the sequel immediately.

Attack of the Friday Monsters: So far reminds me of the beginning to Ni No Kuni and likely will stay that way throughout. I got this for my wife for Christmas and she's been gushing about it to the point that I decided to get it too.

Got a few bucks left from this card, but I don't think I'm gonna need them for a while.

Ratchet & Clank

Christ almighty. I've owned the PS3 collection (remastered 3 PS2 games) and struggled through it. It's a damn hard game. Worse, I have died so many goddamn times fighting the last boss - and STILL haven't beaten him - that I've pretty much given up. :(

Did you use the grindboots on the railing? That makes it easier.

Actually, I found that just made things more aggravating. But you know what?

FINALLY DID IT, BITCHES.
FUCK YEAH! Now go play the sequel thats twice as hard! Seriously, its a nightmare. A fun nightmare, but a nightmare. Also the Gadgetron gadgets can't get upgraded, just letting you know now so you don't waste your time upgrading them like I did.

And really to the grind-boots? Fleh, different tokes for different pokes.

I just finished Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Good god, play this game. It's short (I beat it in about 3-4 hours) but it tells a story so incredibly well. It's technically a puzzle platformer where you play two brothers at the same time, controlling each with a control stick, on a quest to fetch magic water to save their father. It's beautiful and touching, and I would rank it up there with Shadows of the Colossus in terms of games as art. Seriously, go play this right now.

Whatever you do, don't bother with All 4 One. It was just terrible.
Deadlocked had problems too, namely that you didn't have the mobility from Clank, which made the game hard at times. Of course, it also had seriously OP weapons too, which made the game ridiculously easy at times.

Guacamelee - Holy poop, is this game unforgiving in some spots! Don't get me wrong, it's incredibly fun! But damn, some of the jumping puzzles are punch-a-monitor frustrating!

So my kids are pretty damn good gamers.

So far I've thrown at them:

Rogue Legacy
Super Meat Boy
Torchlight

and
FTL

They beat the first two, are 20 levels into the third and have already reached the Federation Flagship in the 4th.

I'm so proud.

I cut them some slack on beating Dark World, which they're still working on but yes, they beat the main plot stages.

Also this is in no means their full gaming extent, they're constantly beating games on DS/SNES/N64/Wii etc. This was the first time I gave them PC games (besides Minecraft).

I've been going crazy during this STEAM sale picking them up as many games as I can. Magika, Torchlight 2, Trine 1&2, Bastion etc. I'll probably just post their progress here :)

I think adults generally underestimate kids' ability to grasp and master games.

7 year old me beat Castlevania 3. 30 year old me wouldn't even try.

Well they're teenagers but yes, most people do underestimate kids in gaming. It's why 10yr old me grew up watching my 11yr old sister destroy people 2-3x her age at most arcade fighters. :D

I used to be such a pro at Sonic the Hedgehog games. Now ... I don't even know what I am now.

I'm glad to hear your kids take on those challenges, Gilg. My 11-year-old cousin has become one of those "I don't like hard games" kids and takes it to the next level. He pretty much can't play a Mario game except New Super Mario Bros 2, probably the easiest Mario game ever released, and gets stuck (and subsequently quits) in Pokemon because he doesn't read what any of the NPCs say to him. It was cute when he was 6 and going up to his moms asking "can you beat this part for me," they having never touched a video game, but now it's just another arm of his laziness.
