Video Game News and Miscellany

Capcom and Square used to be game companies I just assumed I'd always buy their games site unseen, without discussion. Oh how times change.
Truth. I was going to say that SQUARE is the RPG equivalent of CAPCOM when it comes to idiot moves for the past decade.

At least Square seems to be learning something with the recent success of Bravely Default. Of course, what they've learned is something I could have told them 20 years ago AS A CHILD, but still...

From what I understand one of the major issues with SE was the changing of leadership around the time of the merger. The guy running the show pre-SE was ousted for someone who tried to shift the focus to mobile. Unfortunately, much like Bandai-Namco, SE never seemed to care much about the market outside of Japan, and has, over the last few years, paid the price for it.

Fucking executives... look, I know this is counter-intuitive but I'll spell it out for any Japanese CEOs watching.

- Japan is a secondary market. The sooner you realize this, the better of we'll all be. If you want to make money, you need to hit it big in America and Europe. This means releasing more titles overseas.

- This doesn't mean we want you to make games designed for our markets. We love your games just fine and we didn't stop buying them until you tried to "westernize them".

- We don't give two shits about mobile games (not that you release them over here anyway). We ESPECIALLY don't care about games where it's pay to win. Give us compelling content and we'll buy it. We already have enough shovelware from every programmer in a garage trying to get rich off of idiots.

- You need to lower your market projections to reasonable levels and lower the production costs of games. Not every title needs to be Triple A. Selling a million copies should never be "below our projections".

- Survival Horror NEVER died. The recent resurgence on PC proves this. You simply gave up on it because you wanted to release more action games for a wider audience.

- Start treating your developers like the fucking creators they are. All the old guard is leaving home and starting their own companies to make the stuff they like. We'll buy it from them if you won't let them make it for you.

I want to complain once again about how bad the PC port of RE4 is. Seriously, it's bad. It's an insult to call it a port. Hell, it's an insult to call it RE4.

The only Capcom game I've ever seen where "Westernizing it" actually made me think about playing it.

... and then they dissolved that studio, which went on to form Platinum Games and are now making a killing with Bayonetta. Nevermind that Viewtiful Joe (ANOTHER abandoned franchise...) was excellent, Okami is a critical darling, and God Hand is a universal standard for good design. DID NOT MEET INFLATED PROJECT PROJECTIONS.

God Hand was the original Dark Souls. (I know Demons Souls came before Dark, shut up)

Seriously, that game was HARD, but oh so good.

Apparently they recently fixed it to have mouse support. Not sure how much that fixes issue--they already had suckered me once in 2007 buying that crappy port in the first place.

Even better, it got harder and easier to match your skill. No other game has come close to doing this as well as God Hand did.

Killing is strong word. It did so well that no one but Nintendo would publish a sequel.

Looks like Citizens of Earth has a second chance at life.

For those who don't know, Citizens of Earth is an RPG where you play the Vice President of the World and, instead of him actually fighting, you send NPCs into battle instead. The game had a Kickstarter page which unfortunately failed, but the game's developers vowed to continue making it. At lus seems to have taken notice and has decided to publish the game.

Have you tried the recent Ultimate HD port? Not much in the way of actual y'know HD, but it's a decent port.

Well, it's a decent port now that it's been patched at least.

Not that a member of the glorious PC Master Race like I would condescend to such, but it seems to me some console peasant is now living his dream.

I'd like you all to appreciate this image.

Specifically, I hope you all appreciate the fact that Nintendo is showing Mega Man more love in one game that Capcom has for years.

Can't wait for Smash Bros. for more Mega Man action and for Mighty No.9, the spiritual successor to Mega Man.
Well that picture wasn't really complete, they fixed it before release though:
