[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

Speaking of silly anime, my God, No Game No Life. The second ep of this one had me laughing harder than I've laughed at anime in a very long time.

Speaking of Attack on Titan, I finished the first (and only so far) season.

It's okay. Again, the ideas and action in it is very compelling. And some of the characters are interesting. Not many, but some.

But overall, it's just...eh, I don't know. I'm just not a big fan of anime in general. The last series I watched before this was Death Note and I had a lot of same problems with it.
Have you watched Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex?

I remember watching the first Ghost in the Shell movie way back in High School. Honestly, I've come to the conclusion that anime as a medium just isn't my cup of tea.
Give SAC a shot. I'm right there with you on the movie, it was impenetrable gobbledygook. But Stand Alone Complex actually was a very decent police action/drama. Each of the two seasons has an overarching criminal mastermind plot arc, interspersed with some minor filler in them. I liked season 2 better than 1 - mostly because season 1 seemed to be laying on the fanservice a little heavy, I guess they were insecure about holding young male viewers through what turned out to be a surprisingly deep, thought provoking, almost intellectual treatise on the nature of identity, individualism and the self in a world where technology pushes humanity further and further into collectivism. When you can plug your brain directly into the internet, do you really need a body anymore? Or, once prosthetics has advanced to the point where it's commonplace to simply replace your entire body (just by placing your brain in a case with a cybernetic interface) with an artificial one that is faster, stronger, doesn't get sick and can be repaired/replaced/accessorized.... are you in fact still a human, or something else? Can an artifically created intelligence, for lack of a better description, grow a soul?

Death Note is really the best you're going to get from serious anime, so if you had problems with that, I wouldn't expect anything to sway you.
The aforementioned Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex? Cowboy Bebop? Death Note's good, but I can't put it on the same level.

Anyway Nick, just out of curiosity, does your general "meh"-ness apply to Miazaki's films as well? Should you decide to give another anime a try (and no pressure on that front, if it's not for you, so be it), I'd second Gas's suggestion. That or Cowboy Bebop, a gritty sci-fi following a crew of bounty hunters.

On the one hand, as much as I liked Cowboy Bebop, it was really an excercise in style rather than plot - but on the other hand, Death Note's second season. Ugh.

What do you mean? Death Note only has 25 episodes.

:ninja:

Okay, on that (HUGE Death Note spoilers):

The show does go downhill post-L and I feel it would've been a better ending to leave with the "Dark Age of Kira" narration. Light's arrogance overtakes his intelligence in the second season and M and N aren't nearly as formidable as L. That said, the final episode had some choice dialogue and character moments, like that one cop who had total faith in Light who flips his shit finding out Light is Kira, or the moment when Light is fleeing and sees his younger self on the bridge. It was a great contrast over how much had changed.

But yeah, would've been better if there'd not been a second season.

Ok, on the advice of this forum, while I've been laid up sick this weekend, I watched Kill La Kill from start to finish.

What the actual fuck.

I don't think I'll ever describe/admit to watching this anime to anyone not separated from me by a comfortable blanket of internet anonymity.

welcome to the club Gas, I watched a few minutes of it and went WELP NO ONE MUST KNOW OF MY VIEWERSHIP OF THIS.

Yeah, I liked Miazaki films. They didn't have a lot of time-wasting moments with over the top emotional outbursts. From what I recall, anyway. And of course, they're absolutely gorgeous films. I also remember liking Ninja Scroll when I saw it in my first year of college. I don't know if it'd appeal to me again, now.

So, I watched the first episode of Kill La Kill.

...

Moon people.
To add unnecessary further detail to what Gas and Cynicism have already said, it's like Gurren Lagann(unsurprising given it's the same crew behind it), only based on Magical Girl anime and clothing/nudity instead of Mecha shows and Manly fighting spirit.

This made no sense to me. I'm not an anime aficionado.

I do at least know what the magical girl genre is.

So yeah...Funimation was aware Eren, Sukasa, and Legrin were supposed to be like ten at first right? Not saying the old show wasn't guilty of casting sins either, does Armin have NO puberty glands? If so...I could believe that. Also Toonami cut the theme song, so there's that little annoyance to deal with.

I need to spend less time on Tumblr. I'm so tired of the posts which basically say "I liked ___, so could everyone please stop saying bad things about ____, it's very upsetting to see that people have different opinions than mine. If your opinion is different from mine, please keep it to yourself."

I've been on the internet for somewhere between 13 and 15 years, and not before 2014 have I seen this kind of spineless childishness so widespread. I've seen flame wars aplenty, but not this "please PLEASE shut up about the thing I like!" as if throwing please on there makes the person any less of an asshole than the flamer. I get people being upset about real life issues, but this about fucking movies and TV shows, forms of entertainment. How can you be so fragile as to let an adverse opinion about that break you? These stupid children.

Rant is on point for Attack on Titan dub. Gods forbid I see someone else say they liked it or I'll have to cry in the corner, singing to myself, until I can muster the nerve to get online and beg them not to voice their opinion.

Ugh.

Damn straight, stick to your fuckin' guns. On the topic, Mikasa just sounds wrong to me switching from stern monotone to sarcastic snarkette. Just sounds off. Of course it sounds even MORE off considering during the damn flash back they are supposed to be TEN! What is this, Saban? The original actors could pull off more of an age transformation, not sure if it was voice modulation or whatever but it sounded right.
