[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

I think I may have finally grown up... I have enough money to buy a new computer, all I have now are 7+ year old desktops, but I don't really want to spend the money. I mean, I could use that money for things like an air conditioner or washing machine or something practical!

I know what you mean. We just moved into a bigger place that costs twice as much. No more extra spending. I cashed VISA points for Mario Kart.

However, I am trying to figure out why I have this need for 501st approved armor, and how I can afford/justify it.

I'm going more for style. 2mm ABS won't protect from much.

But I'm looking at $1000 at least for a suit and $150 for the rifle.

Or $2800 if I get one made from original armour and built to be screen accurate (from RS Propmasters).

Hmmyea, that's probably not enough for police to consider a credible threat...Which is one of many problems, sometimes, withreporting things on line - there's so much out there, and in some circles it'ss till perfectly OK to say you'll "kill" someone over a sandwich, that it's very hard to distinguish threat levels. While upsetting, I don't think this guy was actually considering coming over to gouche out her eyeballs. Which makes it "only" hurtful speech. Which means no cop ever will bother with it. A lot of people still think you can talk to anyone on Facebook the way you'd talk to afriend in a bar at 2 am, or a mate in the gym locker room, or another driver while safely inside your own car where the other can't hear you. Unfortunately, that's not true. Hugs to the lady, and ignore the idiot.

The next person to turn me down for a permanent position because "we went with a candidate with more experience" is getting punched in the throat, so help me god.

Some people never catch a break. A friend of mine has gone through so much crap. Her mom just went through emergency surgery, and it's looking really uncertain. She and her mom don't have a good relationship. Of course she's there waiting for her mother to wake up every day. That means being in the presence of her stepfather, who's been really inappropriate with her in the past. There's just been so much tragedy in her life. Every time I've seen her this week, she's been exhausted and just numb. I just want her to have a reasonably long streak of peace in life. Her daughter is a new source of comfort, and that makes me feel better. She's found a lot of fulfillment in being a good mom--probably because she didn't have a good one. If her mother dies, we'll all be sad, but no one will be surprised. Hard living takes people early sometimes. It's callous, I guess, but right now I'm much more worried about my friend. What a shitty situation.

I understand what you mean, the problem is that it depends on what's said. If it's over a hot-button issue, even an obvious joke can be taken as a legitimate threat by authorities. The laws exist so that police and federal agents can take action based on comments made online, however, it's really entirely up to how they "feel" about it. It's entirely up to the authorities' personal judgment, whether they're having a bad day, etc.

Minor rant, huh?

Jim Cantore is coming to Omaha today.

I think that's one of the signs that you are going to die in a freak weather event.

Just before we left for the USA, Obama visited Brussels. I got stuck in traffic. When we were in New York, he was there too - I got stuck in traffic for a bit. When we got to DC, there he was, again. I'm barely back in Brussels, and he's coming back here again! The guy's following me, I swear!

Some straightline winds and tree damage, but other than that it's nothing but flooding that you can avoid (but stupid people don't) and lots and lots of hail. Like car-killing hail. The city of Blair (about 20-30 miles NW of Omaha) had ALL of their sheriff's vehicles demolished. As in no windshields or windows left. It was crazy. Baseball- to softball-sized hail just killed cars and houses. A small town close by got hit (reportedly) by a tornado, but no damage reports yet.

So it was pretty windy and rainy, but nothing really bad.

Just found out some friends of mine had their barn demolished from a tornado. The house and they are fine, but they raised peafowl and the status of them are unknown. If not dead then they will be scattered.

Dennis is a world-renown peafowl expert and they make their living off these birds. If they are gone it's going to hurt them badly. And they live only a couple miles from my mom, but she is okay and didn't know there was a tornado anywhere close!

Bhamv's tip of the day for translators: If you're translating a formal veterinary/biological research paper about the strains of bacteria found in pig manure, please refrain from using the word "poop". In particular, please refrain from using it in every single instance fecal matter is mentioned, starting from the title of the paper.
