What are you playing?

I actually liked the gameplay of Bioshock 2 better than 1. I know everybody bitches about "the escort mission that never ends" but I liked setting up traps and defending the little sisters intelligently.
This. You could approach fights however you wanted and doing it well meant you'd never have to fire a shot.

Not that there wasn't something extremely cathartic about freezing Big Sisters solid and then bludgeoning them to death with Drill Charge.
There is nothing remotely as fun in Infinite. Even the weapons and vigors were generally boring and those are supposed to be the best part!

So for Jay

Bioshock 2 > Bioshock Infinite

Such casual nonsense.
System Shock 2 > Bioshock > Bioshock 2 > Bioshock 3

Though as Gas already mentioned, I prefer the combat in the 2nd over all Bioshock games. However, Bioshock 1 has the best storyline. Prettiest is the 3rd one... this included Elizabeth, neither the combat nor the storyline compares. It not terrible though. Just pretty damn average.

Just pretty damn average.
Pretty much every critic and most gamers disagree :p

Personally, I loved Infinite's story better, but I like
quantum reality stuff.

It doesn't fail in the third act nearly as badly as Bioshock 1 does. Once the twist is over and you go after Atlas, it falls really flat. I would have been fine if it ended at Andrew Ryan.

I do have to admit that the gameplay in 2 is really great. Taking down the Big Sisters was a lot more satisfying than kamikaze killing the Big Daddies.

But that's all a matter of taste.

I have a craving for some Mass Effect 3 coop.

Anyone interested in playing some in a few days? Who the fuck has this game anyways.

I forgot how much I like Rift's PvP maps. I also love that it mixes factions on each team so there's no UGH FUCKING ALLIANCE/HORDE GETTING STEAMROLLED AGAIN UGH nonsense.

Gameplay - System Shock 2.
Characters/Atmosphere - Bioshock 1.
Plot - Bioshock Infinite.
Fucking Garbage- Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea.

Out of curiosity, does anyone else play Bioshock 1 with vita chambers turned off? I've seen so many people over the years complain about how the vita chambers make the game too easy, and I've felt like I'm the only one who noticed there's an Off switch in the options.

Doesn't change the fact that by the halfway point, you can trounce Big Daddies with your arsenal anyway, but at least without the vita chamber there's no wrench temptation.

That option was not there at first. Also even with it, the game is pretty damn easy even on hard.
True. I finished it on the difficulty above hard (Very Hard?) Next time, going for insane. It'll probably be the only game I beat on an insane difficulty without cheating.

Why do people keep talking like Infinite was the third in the series. It was second. There was no BioShock 2. No. No, there wasn't. NO THERE WASN'T.

Azure Striker Gunvolt

I'm at what may be the end, and my prediction for why it won't actually be the very end ...

Incoming betrayal in 3, 2, 1 ...

Banished.

Year 78. Population 400. Out of arable land. Food supplies dwindling. From a 20,000 excess to a mere 1,000 in the space of 3 years. 15% unemployment rate. I expanded way too fast. The food merchants haven't been coming by often enough to offset it, either.

Lots of people are about to get real hungry. This could be the end of the town.

When I heard Azure Striker Gunvolt was on its way, I felt bad that it wasn't going to get the attention and acclaim that was given to Shovel Knight.

With ASG behind me though, I no longer feel bad. Shovel Knight deserved all the praise it got, but ASG ... not so much. It's fun at first and has some neat gameplay, but unlike the Mega Man games it feeds from, the gameplay doesn't really evolve. You get new guns, which are mostly not as good as the one you start with and aren't all that different or useful, and a couple new powers, some restorative, some boss-killing. Largely, you're going to spend the game handling enemies the same way, and though a couple levels give you some neat moments, largely they don't have much change-up. I thought Mega Man X prioritized combat over level design, but that's nothing compared to this game's ratio. To compare, while Mega Man X did focus less on level craziness, there was a varied arsenal at your disposal. Here, it's tag enemy, hold electricity until dead, dodge attacks. It does get challenging at times depending on the enemy, but because you only have one method of handling any problem, you're never going to have to try much else.

The boss gauntlet is weird abbreviated (i.e. you only fight some of the game's bosses), and because of the earlier mentioned boss-killing abilities, you may find yourself overwhelmed by the final boss, requiring you to go back and grind a bit. The game expects the player to go back through the levels multiple times for its crafting system, but the benefit this conveys is really to inflate your gained XP. The items aren't that great.

Not going to worry about the story; it's unimportant.

So though the presentation is good, the combat never really evolves, and so in the last levels, you're doing exactly the same as earlier levels, without any challenge differences or what you'd expect from growth in the game's mechanics. The final boss battle reminded me a little of the final boss battle in Mega Man Zero, which I had just finished playing the weekend ASG came out, and that was a much better game.

I don't regret getting this, but I'm hoping Mighty No. 9 doesn't decide to just ape some elements from Mega Man and call it a day. The rest of the game has to work well too.

Year 82. Population 369. Fortunately, AMAZINGLY, I'm able to get the food shortage under control. Converting every single spare flat area of space to farmland or pasture and building 3 more mines from which to get iron and coal to trade for food has paid off... between the additional workplaces and a net dying off of roughly 40 baby boomers (or perhaps that was some nomads I took in, ill-advisedly), I managed to get unemployment back down to close to 0 and everybody's fed and reasonably happy.

Then I suddenly get hit with a triple whammy. An influenza outbreak, exacerbated by the fact that the dumbasses always wait to go to the hospital until they complete whatever their current job is, thus spreading the creeping crud around town even more. Simultaneously, not one, but BOTH my sheep pastures, which aren't even next to each other (and are separated by a river with no bridge for a good 100 meters) come down with an infestation of parasites, killing off the sheep steadily. This is bad - not only is the mutton an important food source, but no sheep means no wool, and no wool means no warm clothes in the winter. I can't afford for the fisheries, pastures and mines to stop operating in the winter, so warm clothing is crucial. Finally, fortune finally finishes emptying its stomach by vomiting on the eiderdown of my life at last, and two merchants come by, both selling sheep - at exorbitant prices, of course. Nevertheless, I quickly order all my infested sheep slaughtered, which removes the infestations from the pastures, and then sell all my firewood, iron, coal and even some precious stone (with land/space at such a premium now, I've got nowhere to spare to build another quarry when my current one shuts down, which will be sooner than I like) and buy out all their new, healthy sheep. I'll still be out some mutton while the herds repopulate, but at least there will be wool in the meantime.

I finally got a few more hours of Borderlands in, and I'm such a habitual sniper that in two large setpieces, I accidentally killed the intended boss before actually entering the field of battle proper.

Sweet.

Got the Smash Bros. Demo codes. (which let you play the demo a week in advance)

Controls take a smidge getting used to, but damn, this game is going to be AMAZING. I'm already set on Mega Man as my primary character.

Also, since my brother and I already used two of the four codes, this leaves me with a couple extra...

Yes, please.

@Zero Esc would probably like one as well.

No problem. I know how much you've been looking forward to it too.
I have, and the demo tells me it's going to be excellent. The controls are taking a little getting used to--whenever I play as Mega Man, my thumbs default to his game's controls--but once used to them, everything plays solid.

You playing the 3DS or Wii U version?

The demo is only out for the 3DS version since that's getting released a couple months before the Wii U version. Wii U version controls will probably be easier to get used to if you have Gamecube controllers. I played another 40 minutes this morning, working up the enemy AI to 9, so I've adjusted at this point. Mega Man's save is still rough even then because sometimes you're trying to use Rush Coil to save yourself, but then instead he'll do the metal blade diagonal-up. Even the AI has a rough time; I fought it as Mega Man on level 8 and as it sailed off, it did a Leaf Storm instead of the jump. He's a little finnicky.

Villager is definitely the easiest to play of the five fighters in the demo. It gives me the most trouble to fight in a final destination (aka Omega) type match, and the save is an already high jump, aided by balloons. It's a character for beginners. Good to practice against though. I'm doing fine against the other level 9 characters, though I'd probably change my tune if Fox was in the demo.

I intend to just get the 3DS version because I know I'll play it more (and probably somewhat because it's coming out first).

Here I've been looking forward to Theatrhythm: Curtain Call this week, but now my time is going to be torn between that and the demo, especially when the free one comes out this week so my wife can Vs. me.[DOUBLEPOST=1410703992,1410703511][/DOUBLEPOST]Side note: the 3DS chugs a little when trying to leave the game. I feel like most of its processing power goes into it, and it has a delay in icon loading and even powering down. These shouldn't be issues with the New 3DS, but I can see why Nintendo felt it necessary to push that system out.

But the game itself runs smooth.

Doesnt sound bad. I was kinda worried how a Smash Bros game would play on 3DS. How does it look? The screenshots, look...OK.

Looks great. I expected it to be jarring, but the match started and there was nothing to note wrong about the graphics; they look fine. There's no slowdown either, but again, that's probably because the game is eating up everything the 3DS can do.

I haven't tried it with 3D though, so can't vouch for that, but for regular appearance, it's solid. Sounds fantastic, too.
