Video Game News and Miscellany

I honestly think the good press for Mighty No. 9 woke them up and now they are going to do their damnedest to cash in on what good will they have from Smash Brothers while they have it.
I'm hoping it goes beyond that and they actually try to do another Mega Man game (and not a fan game they purchased). But I think you're right; between Shovel Knight and Mighty No. 9, a couple brain cells in Capcom's suits might have realized there's still a demand for Mega Man, and if people can't have him, they'll take Mega Man except in name, and pay other companies for those games.

Nintendo eshop news: the Wii U Virtual Console will see the Donkey Kong Country trilogy over the course of October.

3DS will get the Donkey Kong Land games.

So, Bayonetta 2 is out in Japan and has been getting reviews. Eurogamer, known for rarely giving any game higher than a score of 6, has given the game a 9. That's like a billion on the eurogamer scale.

I'd be upset over this if Donkey Kong Land wasn't actually pretty good.
Is it? I remember playing on the old, old Gameboy and having a hard as hell time seeing. It'll probably look better on the 3DS though.

There are articles claiming it's going for Game of the Year status. Like I said of the demo, I'd be getting psyched if I wasn't already psyched. Been excited for it since it was announced.

What I'm pretty sure is going to happen with Bayonetta 2 is that it's going to be critically acclaimed, but still sell like shit because so few people have a Wii U.

Perhaps. When we bought a Wii U exactly a year ago, one of the reasons was because Bayonetta 2 would be coming out for it. I don't know how many die-hard Bayonetta fans are in the U.S., but getting a Wii U is really the only way to play it unless it gets ported. Sega and Nintendo have become pretty tight-knit over the years. I don't know if they'd Capcom it for better sales.

The only review I've seen that wasn't in the super high scores was a 7.5 from polygon, who said Bayonetta 2 is sexist and gross.

Oh Polygon...

So Pokemon XY will not be patched to acommodate the new wave of Megas.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/20...be_patched_to_accommodate_new_mega_evolutions

This essentially forces everyone to buy the new games, as even competitive online battles will be restricted.
My guess is that either the items can't be transferred or they won't work in XY.

If Nintendo is going to stop being the good guys and emulate other companies' douchebaggery, then they need to actually get with the times and implement a network system so downloaded titles aren't tied to the hardware.

I... honestly don't care enough about Megas right now to care. I already have my Mega Gengar. Unless I can get a Mega Magnazone, Crawdaunt, or Darmanitan it doesn't effect my team line-up.

It would gate you out of playing with people who have the new megas, though.

I feel like that's what Gamefreak wants with the XY league and the ORAS league. You can only use Pokemon obtained from those games, XY's marked by the little blue symbol on the Pokemon's status screen. ORAS will likely have another mark.

This might possibly make anything uploaded from the older generations unusable. If that's the case, I'm really glad I gave up on the competitive stuff.

It's good not to care about the Megas because items can't be uploaded to the Pokemon Bank, thus without a second 3DS and Pokemon game, you won't be able to keep old Mega Stones anyway.

So really, the overall state of the Pokemon games haven't changed; they're just pretending to.

This seems like it could be a problem. Unless they include a way to get ALL of the previous Mega stones in each generation, some Megas are going to be missing in each version. If you can't have a Mega you like from a previous game, who the fuck cares?

"I thought we had something, AshburnerX!"
Not even Cartoon Network cares about you anymore!

Seriously... even they can't air it anymore. Titmouse AND Williams Street have both tried to buy the rights from CN, where they were given a brief letter telling them they can't sell them and would ignore all further inquiries about it. Short version? CN needed to get some money out of the show after a (now gone) exec shitcanned it because he didn't get it and cancelled the third season and DVD set... so they did some weird legal stuff with it and wrote it off in such a way that they don't know who owns the rights anymore. The only only LEGAL way to see the show in the US is via an Xbox Live thing, I believe.

Beware the Batman just suffered the same fate for different reasons: it had a high female viewership, so it was cancelled preemptively because they were worried the toy companies wouldn't license it... despite Beware the Batman toys hitting shelves MONTHS before the show aired. Same shit happened to Young Justice and Green Lantern... and that's straight from Paul Dini's mouth! At least Toonami aired the last 7 episodes in a marathon before the cut-off date.

I played the ORAS demo. Some of the new megas are really ugly. Mega Glalie looks like something out of a horror movie, Mega Swampert looks kinda dumb, and Mega Slowbro looks REALLY dumb.

However, Metagross gets a mega, so I'm probably getting this game.

It feels like Polygon just looked at promotional stuff, but didn't bother to play the game and see how wrong they are.
From reading the review, it seems like the reviewer did in fact play it. And enjoyed it, and even wrote several paragraphs about how amazingly great the gameplay was. But he said the sexual content broke his immersion, which ok, I can totally see someone having that reaction, especially if they're not comfortable with that sort of imagery. The hubbub comes from the fact that he lowered the score he awarded it because he didn't like the sexiness, and felt it was sexist. I would argue over why that is or isn't a problem, except for the fact that all number scores are arbitrary anyway and trying to take it seriously starts to make my brain hurt.

But it's not sexist. Well, I should say that the first one wasn't. One really has to be trying to not see it as tongue in cheek, or that Bayonetta's character isn't playing to the kind of stuff usually criticized about women in games.

So, I haven't played the second one. Maybe Bayonetta 2 is just some male power fantasy (TM)? Guess I'll find out in a week.

You're preaching to the choir. I loved Bayonetta, and didn't think it was at all sexist. I simply gave the reviewers beliefs and reasoning based on what he wrote.

I know, man, you're good people. I have a problem with the idea that "women shouldn't do this, women shouldn't do that" on the basis of sexism, when making that distinction itself is sexist. My wife and other women who love Bayonetta see her doing her sexy act as for herself; it's female empowerment. She's never doing it for anyone's attention but her own, and since the reviewer can't see that, it makes it sound like their problem is her doing it at all. Which is bullshit.

All that said, the gameplay is why I play.

I can see both sides of the argument, and while I don't agree with one, can at least see how it was derived. One side views Bayonetta as presented, a lampooning of certain tropes while showcasing a powerful female lead that uses her sex as a literal weapon, and obviously enjoys herself while doing it. The other side instead sees a male game developer (or more accurately, a team of male developers) creating sexy female images to adhere to male fantasy.

Let them post here and I will stamp them with a Disagree!

That'll show 'em.

So people are making a big stink about this game:

Why didn't they care when it was called Postal? Or GTA?
Er... they did. Both those games raised a great stink.

I can see why this one in particular though is also doing so. The opening lines could have been taken from the pages of the diaries of any one of the multitude of mass shooters that have been burning up the news cycle the last few years.

That said, people who find it repugnant can feel free not to buy it.

I probably won't either, but that's just because I don't care for isometric shooters.
