REGARDING EVOLVE....





When your fucking game has planned DAY 1 DLC that costs $15 EACH, for a single character, on a fucking game that is priced at $60 you are fucking asshole.

Sorry, but if anyone buys this game before it's less than $10 on Steam... then you're part of the problem.

It's a game centered around multiplayer, not single player. Waiting to get it sounds like waiting to play by yourself. On the other hand, you're right.

The desire to have fun is battling the desire to not contribute to this shit. And it's not a difficult battle if I don't want it to be--two games I'm excited about are coming out 3 days after Evolve, so it's not like it's a boredom issue. They do press you to get it Day 1 a little by making the fourth monster a pre-order bonus; I can't be on the fence about this for much longer if I want to play as it. So that too is a problem.

I'm still undecided.
 
Okay, I totally misread what Nintendo is doing. There will be new physical rewards and "dozens" of downloadable games offered in February, plus a free FlipNote Studio 3D download. So those coins are still worth something (possibly). I hope the downloadables they offer aren't just trash.

Looks like there are mass layoffs at some game sites. The Escapist, GameFront, and GameTrailers are all affected.

The only one that affects me as a viewer is MovieBob, whose work I've always enjoyed and appreciated. He, Yahtzee, and Jim Sterling were the only reasons I visited The Escapist. Now, looks like it's just Yahtzee.

Although...his latest article, while it does raise some good points, makes me a little uneasy:

The part that bugs me the most is this: "I've never been interested in hype or the drama behind game development, only in the finished products, and so far I've seen nothing to indicate that games are being negatively affected by either misogyny or hysterical misplaced moralizing."

It's easy to say these kinds of things when he isn't part of any minority that has been affected by certain hurtful words or phrases.
 
Eh, I like Yahtzee's reviews sometimes but there are a lot of times where he misses the entire fucking point. Yes, as part of the audience that games have traditionally been aimed at, he almost certainly doesn't see the problem, because it's not a problem for him. Going back to Colbert, "Global warming isn't a problem because I felt cold today."

Worse is if you read what he actually says. He doesn't say that he hasn't really noticed enough misogyny to make it an issue, which while a bit myopic, is at least somewhat understandable - it doesn't effect him, so he doesn't take notice of it. Given how often he's pointed that very thing out, though, that seems a bit specious.

What he said was "I see nothing to indicate that games are being negative affected by misogyny", which means that he notices the misogyny in games just fine, he just considers it to be an acceptable factor.

That doesn't follow. I see nothing to indicate you're being negatively affected by being a remote controlled droid instead of a regular alt of JCM's like the rest of us. This does not mean I have actually noticed you're a droid, but don't care. It means I see no proof that being, or not being, a droid, is having any impact.

I see nothing to indicate that games are being negatively affected by alien take-overs of developers. This does NOT imply that I know there are, or aren't , any alien take-overs. Only that, if there are any alien take-overs, they're not having a negative effect.


I don't agree with his point - the continuing overabundance of gruff white male protagonists is annoying and makes games blander, and more diverse protagonists (which does NOT mean all game protagonists should be half-black-half-asian disabled transwymen, either) would definitely improve the gamescape. Just want to point out that you're making a logical error there.

According to Bob himself, he's still working for The Escapist. He was just included because he's got a lot of folks who... well, want him him dead and delight in any chance to fuck with him.

Leigh Alexander: "(Yahtzee/Croshaw) is still a thing?" He's basically, as others have said, the primary (perhaps only) reason to go to the Escapist anymore - and it was how I found them in the first place. Granted, the only other thing I ever watched there was Lisa Foiles' top 5s (which got cancelled months ago) and I do still pop by to see what current topic of controversy Critical Miss is failing to grasp at the moment, but for me, the Escapist's main draw is, and always has been, that it is where Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw hangs his hat. If he went somewhere else, I doubt Escapist would ever see another hit from my IP.

Also Leigh "gamers are dead" Alexander wouldn't know a good video game story if it bit her on the face, and is an all-round terrible human being.
 
I kind of have mixed feelings about Bob Chipman of The Escapist, who is basically the only reason I go to the Escapist myself. On the one hand, he can put out some really insightful pieces and I find his various series (including The Game Overthinker) entertaining. On the other, he constantly puts forth this idea that it doesn't matter how social change is achieved and that it's worth doing at any cost (which makes him sound like a terrorist) and that this generation of gaming is doomed, essentially because it's not the Golden Age he grew up with and companies are still completely willing to cater to the easiest demographic (essentially the kind of people who want hm dead, so I don't blame him for this at least).

Gaming is Doomed? Hardly. The barriers for entry into the industry are at an all time low, so now ANYONE can make a game. Kickstarter has proven able to supply capital to anyone with a good idea and shown that at least some of those projects will see the light of day. Because now people are making the games they want and fans are being given what they want, many genres (like adventure and survival horror) are in a renaissance and living second lives as viable properties. We're also seeing lots of old school devs dust off the gloves and putting out the kind of stuff that made them famous to begin with or going back and updating their most famous works with modern graphics.

To put it mildly, this might actually be one of the greatest ages to be a gamer in. Yes, we have problems like the outright toxicity of certain parts of the community and shady business practices by the Triple A publishers, but it's still more good than bad. I think Bob just can't see that because he has to put up with fucking death threats all day.
 
Theatrhythm is getting The World Ends With You DLC, also more Chrono Trigger. And I just realized that this year is the 20th anniversary of Chrono Trigger, but Squenix probably won't do anything cool for it because they fail to realize they own a masterpiece.
 
TWEWY is one of those games that simply wouldn't work removed from it's setting. Like... you couldn't do it in New York or LA. It only works BECAUSE it's Shibuya and that setting can tie together the eclectic soundtrack with the over designed fashion and the crippling loneliness that is being a teenager. It's just one of those games that needs a sequel and it seems like Square might finally be doing something about it, especially after the special ending for the iPad edition.
 
The class action lawsuit against Sony for the hacking issue (no, not this year's--the one before that) appears to have been settled. Anyone who had a PSN account before May 2011 is eligible to receive a few bucks, or a month of PS+, or some games that will probably be of Sony's choosing. You have to fill out a claim and do some other bullshit, and on the one hand it feels like more work than it's worth to gain nothing, and on the other hand I want to drain even a couple drops from Sony to maybe teach them to stop being complete fucking morons about their security.

Speaking of, there's actually a video series going around now that has John Romero doing "dev commentary" playthroughs of the original Doom, and they're surprisingly engaging. I've always been in "Camp Carmack" when it comes to the Id guys, and lampooned Romero with everyone else, but listening to the guy describe his process and reasons for designing doom levels the way he did (as he plays through them) is really interesting.
