Random Video Game Crap

I really do miss CoH, even though I didn't play it for its last three years or so. Are there any MMOs out there that I might enjoy if I dug that? As far as superhero ones, I tried Champions and DC, neither of which really grabbed me.

I keep wanting to get into an MMO of some sort. Tried Rift and Final Fantasy, but they didn't hook me, either. Then again, my attempts at all of them have all been soloing so far.

You would probably like the pulp adventure/mystery/horror of The Secret World. You have tons of costume options (in the cash shop, but you can get a good amount for 10-20 bucks). Facial options aren't great though. Still, you can usually get it for 15 bucks on Steam and you get a TON of content for that 15 bucks. No sub ether.

Another option is The Elder Scrolls Online, which is also going buy to play on March 17. Character customization is pretty good and the actual game is way better than you've heard. It's pretty traditional as far as MMOs go, which is completely the opposite of TSW.

Star Wars: The Old Republic isn't bad if you are willing to drop like 30 bucks buying most of the stuff you need from the Cartel Market. For instance, you NEED Artifact Gear Authorization by level 50 and you'll want it on all your characters. You'll also probably want to buy some race options, armor color unification, and you'll eventually need to invest in some Escrow Withdrawals if you want to buy some stuff off the auction house because even prefered players only get to have 250k in their pockets at a time unless you do an escrow withdrawal. Or you could just sub for awhile and skip that nonsense.

Otherwise... I dunno. If Black Desert ever gets an english version, it has hands down the best character creation tools I've ever seen.

I second The Secret World, Nick, check it out. Ash is right that the customization of the physical features is limited but you have a separate system for appearance vs. gear. So you can gear however most suits your build and dress you character up to look however you want. Base game gets you a ton of content as well as having several ways to get new content (in the form of new Issues of the story) when you run out of things to do. Game is also really solo friendly and has some of the best animated cutscenes of any game I have played recently, plus awesome voice acting. It's also B2P, meaning you buy the game and never have to purchase a sub or have loads of content locked like in F2P models.

See this, everything you just typed? This is exactly why SWtOR can fuck right off.

The only, truly restrictive thing in the game is the credit cap and it exists to basically keep the economy from folding in on itself. Credits are NOT are hard to get in the late game... I did like an hour's worth of dailies this morning and had almost my entire cap (I only started with like 4k). What does this mean for subs? It means you can buy virtually all of the legacy options with only a few days work. Want Hk-51 or the Ewok companion? A few hours of missions will get it for you. Race options? About the same amount of time. Rocket Boots? Get them for EVERYONE in a day. All with credits. If you play a lot, you could literally sub for a month once you hit 50 and you'd be able to buy most of the convenience and legacy stuff with credits within that month.

Now preferred (non-sub but bought something or old subscriber) do need to pay for a lot of the options, but the only MUST HAVE things are the Artifact Gear access, Operation 7-day passes (if you like to raid), Warzone 7-day Passes (if you like to PVP), and the Ship Mission 7-day passes (if you like the new ship pvp game). Some of this stuff can also be bought off of the Galactic Marketplace (AH) or traded between players. For instance, if you got a rare drop from a Flashpoint, you could have another player buy you what you want off the Cartel Market and they can trade it to you after 3 days.

They are also pretty good when it comes to actual story content. Rise of the Hutt Cartel and Shadow of Revan are only 20 bucks combined (you get both with SoR) and you get multiple zones of content from each, along with new daily zones.

So honestly? Aside from the the Artifact Gear and Credit cap, it's not THAT bad.

I actually thing LOTRO is worse about it because they gate off so much of the content... you can get to like level 30 before you ether need to start farming for free points (which will take weeks) or have to buy enough zones to get you up to the expansions.

I still maintai they could salvage most of the story parts of TOR, remake it into KOTOR III, and make millions more than they're earning now.

Those bits would be...

- Jedi Knight Storyline
- Each planet's specific storyline
- The Esseles Flashpoint (Only because part of The Maelstrom makes no sense without it)
- Taral 5 and the Maelstrom flashpoints
- Boarding Party and The Foundry flashpoints
- The Battle of Illum and The False Emperor flashpoints
- The Eternity Vault operation
- Shadow of Revan expansion

That's the stuff that ties into KOTOR itself anyway. This isn't to say that other stuff isn't great itself... the Bounty Hunter and Imperial Agent storylines are fantastic. It's just not vital to what KOTOR 3 would be.

The Jedi Knight storyline is so boring though. :/
The Jedi Consular story isn't any better and the fight against the Sith Emperor is sort of what the backbone of the entire game is built on. The Jedi Knight story also has Lord Scourge, who is pretty important to the plot between KOTOR 2 and TOR. To put it simply, you can't DO KOTOR 3 without doing it as the Jedi Knight story because it ties into everything else to such a high degree.

I agree that the Jedi Consular story is terrible, all of the alliance storylines are. But I wouldn't gut out all the class storylines to make it into KotOR 3, I would use them all and let you pick.

Again, you'd need to include at least some bits of the Knight storyline into the rest in order for the story to make sense. Why is a Bounty Hunter fighting The Emperor? How do they factor into Revan's grand scheme? Why are they working with the Jedi Order?

That's one of the real problems of TOR: when the focus is on the war itself, everyone is relevant. But the plot of the Sith Emperor is all-consuming and really the only part of the story that actually matters. This makes anyone who isn't a Jedi or Sith a hanger on, at best.

Is it worth a sub just to play the storylines? Like, if I don't really care about the MMO aspect, but kinda just want to play the stories?

You'd need to sub for more than one month to do all the storylines... there are 8 total and you need to do all the planets up to 50 to get all the story stuff. It might be easier to just buy $40 worth of points, buy the "Going Places" pack for the jet boots, then buy Artifact Gear Access for all your characters and maybe some other fun stuff. Then you can splurge on Rise of the Hutt Cartel and Shadow of Revan if you are still interested.

Or just watch a youtube video of it and not give them anymore money for that trainwreck of an mmo.

Sorry, I may be a bit bitter.

Instead of subscribing, spend a ton of money on a bunch of different "premium" packs and end up costing you more than a single player game ever would! How much is a sub? $15 a month? You could knock out the storylines in 2 months if you were dedicated. Or at least the ones you care about.

This is a fair point. If you are only going to do one or two stories, then yeah... you only need a month. But if you want to do all 8 and stuff after, it's cheaper to buy stuff off the market.

So, I'm playing Dragon Age Inquisition again, because I'm bored and I wanted to try a Knight Enchanter on super high difficulty (super OP, by the way) and something struck. DAI has fucking terrible music. Not terrible, that's overboard a bit. Completely generic is more appropriate. Nothing sticks out. At all.

Looking forward to Witcher 3 something fierce if the soundtrack is as good as the music from the trailer.

Agreed. During my wife's first playthrough, I kept thinking she had music from other sources playing, because I swear it rips off some tunes from Lord of the Rings and other things, but keeps away from the more recognizable notes so the copying won't be obvious, which makes the music sound really bland. The music in Origins was better during key moments (the opening menu, Ostegar) but overall it lacked its own character, and even when you fight the final boss, it doesn't have its own music, just the same boss music you've heard before.

I will say that watching my wife's second playthrough, where she's side-questing as little as possible and mainly just doing the story, the story is really good. I didn't realize your first big choice for allies
also affected your enemies

Also, now that I've seen the after-credits scene
Every fucking word Solas says has a different meaning. What seemed like odd things for him to focus on, like "how did Corypheus survive the explosion?", now make perfect sense because that was the foil in Solas's plan.

I'm really interested to see what happens next in the series, even if I still have no intention to play it anymore.

Wave 4 Amiibos up on Nintendo's UK site ... and already sold out

Yes, already sold out. Every new character.

This is fucking insane. At this point, they're being targeted specifically by scalpers to buy as many as they can afford, to then resell. I can't even get mad at the guy who bought four Little Macs when there's someone who bought 100 Rosalinas.

In any case, Robin, Lucina, Charizard, Wario, Ness, and Pac-Man are done for that. I'm hoping there's some separate stock available for retailers in other countries so others have a chance.

I'm just really mad at Nintendo about the whole thing, because my daughter wants Rosalina, and I want Robin and Lucina, but it's clearly not going to happen because I really don't want to buy them from scalpers.

And the guy who bought the 100 rosalinas claimes to have done so specifically because he hates the character and wants to punish rosalina fans by helping make sure they can't buy the Rosalina amiibo. Apparently he has over $30,000 he's dedicated to the cause of buying up amiibos and hoarding them simply to keep them out of circulation.

See? Rich people ARE evil.
Most people are evil. Being rich just gives your inherent evilness agency.
