So, looks like a house in Toronto was the slight victim of a gas leak. Also, the neighbors house was pretty fucked up too.

Well, the crushing defeat of the Progressive Conservatives in Alberta (after 44 years in power) was certainly something today.

The NDP eh? Bet you're gonna hear all about Bob Rae's time in Ontario.
Rachel Notley's NDP are so center in Alberta. The only CRAZY thing she wants to do is raise corporate taxes along the raises to personal taxes the PC wanted. She's pro-oil development (with the exception that she intends to actually work with natives in Alberta instead of just taking from them). She also intends to raise Alberta's abysmally low minimum wage.

SOCIALISM!!!!!!!

I have a friend in Alberta who is foaming at the mouth at this change, and saying he's going to come south of the border, as he's not likely to have a job soon.

But he's also a little bit of a hyper-conservative, soooo....

I don't like C51 either.[DOUBLEPOST=1431117249,1431117139][/DOUBLEPOST]

Conservatives seem to believe they're insane socialists who will have us in breadlines a week after getting into power. The media (The Sun mostly) do a damn fine job slandering the shit out of anyone that might raise taxes on the rich. It's embarrassing to read because it just means they don't have a fucking clue about the politics they whine about. The scare mongering has already begun in full force with the Sun claiming that businesses will run for the hills if the NDP are elected.

The Conservatives in Alberta seriously just told Albertans that they expect them to carry the extra weight of lower oil revenues on their backs by raising personal income tax, reintroducing the Alberta Healthcare Premiums (where all Albertans have to pay 1000+ dollars a year for healthcare, of which none of the money actually goes to healthcare) and then having the gall to say they aren't touching corporate income taxes.

Then they called for a fucking vote like the arrogant idiots they are expecting another crushing victory like they've had for 44 years straight. They wrote too many checks on the backs of Albertans they their asses couldn't cash.

Christ, the NDP aren't even left wing. They're barely left of center.

Frank since you brought this up, can you explain this to me:

What is the purpose behind "calling an election"? Wouldn't this only encourage the people in power to call one when they're popular, making it more difficult for other parties to have a chance? Is there a rule saying that there has to be an election every x years?

Jim Prentice was only the premier because the last Conservative premier stepped down after she was found out to be basically embezzling money to build herself a luxury apartment. He called the election because he wanted a mandate from Albertans that his way was right. He's always been super arrogant and prone to gigantic failures. He was formerly a federal Conservative who sucked terribly at his job. Came down to the provincial level in 2014, won the party leadership after the Redford debacle, called an election, lost horrendously, then immediately resigned the riding he was running in before the election was even over in the greatest showing of sore loserdom I've ever seen in a politician. He didn't come to Alberta to JUST be an MLA. He came to rule us.

There does have to be an election every 4 years, but the party in charge can call for one whenever they want.

And the ruling party does try to call the election at a time more favorable to them. But an election can also be triggered if the ruling party loses a major vote in the legislature, especially the vote to ratify the budget (this happens during a minority government)

What's funny is that when our current prime minister, Harper, first gained power about ten years ago he passed a law setting fixed election dates and then found areason to call an early election. For that idiocy alone he never should have been reelected, but we're all stupid voters.

I didn't mean to imply you liked C51 (does anybody). Just that it's going to make the RCMP a lot busier.

I'm generally pro-Israel, but I have no idea how this logically makes sense. Like, the people will be forced to buy stuff they don't want to? (Insert Obamacare joke here)

It's threats towards advocacy groups and things like campus protests.

I would resign in a God damn second if told to arrest protesters for hate crimes though I don't think it would come to that. Not that the government hasn't referred to protesters as terrorists before (G8 protests).

Why I loathe broad languaged, oversightless bills like C51.

HCGLNS and SquidleyBits,
I am travelling to Halifax this July for a week to visit my friend. He will still be working Mon-Fri, leaving me alone for ~ 8 hours a day throughout the week. What are some things I should make sure to do while I'm there?[DOUBLEPOST=1431460835,1431460573][/DOUBLEPOST]
I don't mind our Hate Speech Laws. By and large I think they are a good thing (They keep the Westboro Baptist Church out, for example).
But this seems like pretty clear abuse of the laws for political motives. Do not like.

Thanks! Flying in July 11th and leaving the there 19th so I should be able to catch some of the jazz festival and pride. Missing busker fest. Hadn't occurred to me to check out Keith's brewery but I definitely should.
Some stuff I'm sure my friend's going to be up for; I'm looking for good ways to kill time on my own.

I'm pretty sure there is a Boxing Hall of Fame or maybe it's a sports Hall of Fame there in Halifax too that I should check out. My Great Uncle Tommy "the Gun" Spencer is inducted and I'm sure my dad would like to see whatever picture or plaque or whatever they have.

I would expect more of a display by the male to please/attract the female.
