What are you playing?

I almost bought Splatoon today, but I decided to hold off till next paycheck since I needed to pick up something for Father's Day.

I did finally cave on the Mario Kart 8 DLC, and I'm glad I did. The new tracks are super fun and I like using Dry Bowser as my new Heavy driver.

I love the new tracks, particularly the one that is made out of toys.

I'm almost to level 6 in Splatoon. So far, I've noticed that the team with more paint rollers generally wins. I've been playing with the motion controls on, but I think I'm going to switch to using the right analogue stick. The only reason I haven't yet is that it puts the jump button in an awkward spot. Can you remap buttons?

The paint rollers win more with newer players. Between more skilled players, the lack of range becomes an issue. There's no auto-aim for this game, so unless you're using a roller, I'd recommend getting used to the motion controls as the joystick lacks the precision to target well.

I don't think you can remap buttons.

This. If you're on a team with four rollers for example, you are probably screwed.

Also, I disagree about motion controls. They basically also suck. If you're used to console shooters at all, it's no worse.

Paintbrush is also amazeballs as long as you always remember to wave your stick around. >.>

I love how the series had so much wild & wacky stuff, and yet it's known more than just about anything else for only this scene featuring the Sovereign.

More proof of my disgusting casual gamer nature:

Sat down to play a game for an hour before I started cleaning, noticed they patched Sims 4 and added a new neighborhood full of empty lots. TWO HOURS OF MY LIFE GONE JUST POPULATING IT FROM THE ONLINE GALLERY.

Dark Souls 2: I know I'm echoing Yahtzee, but I'm really having trouble seeing how the hell the Iron Keep sits on high over the Harvest Valley. It should be pretty damn visible, and the sky isn't even the same color. It's like we shifted into another plane, without any warning that such was happening.

That said, I'm enjoying the Iron Keep. Feels more like previous Dark Souls than "here's a half-dozen areas in a line, as opposed to an area to explore". Granted, it's taking on a dungeon formula akin to other RPGs, but at least it feels like I have an area to explore.

Got a free $15 gift certificate from Best Buy when I bought the basement TV as part of deal. It's been sitting for a few weeks, because I thought "meh, best buy..whatever." But finally I got around to looking at their online catalog, and it was quite a treasure trove for me, since I haven't been all up on the latest and greatest games in a long time.

Bought a bunch of old PS3 games (Tiger Woods Golf, UFC, that kind of thing), but also picked up The Darkness 2 for the PC for $1.99.

I don't care that it's 3 years old. I would've paid retail for it.

Just a good all-round combo of story, lore, and action. I ended up playing it through in like 3 sittings--and i just don't sit that long and play video games any more.

I did find it weird that I had to redeem a physical game on a CD via Steam

I have The Darkness 2 and enjoyed what I played of it. Picked it up during a steam sale a while back for a few dollars. I'll have to get back to it one of these days. I actually used to read the comic it was based off of.

As for what I'm currently playing, I'm up to level 9 in Splatoon. I'm having the most success with the splattershot with the bazooka special. Finally getting some good gear. Winning much more often than I used to.

The Darkness games are actually kind of considered to be THE BEST part of the franchise, essentially for dropping some of the sillier stuff and turning it into a dark urban fantasy story about love lost and the lengths we go to for the people we love instead of essentially being a 90's dark age superhero comic. The people in Jackie's life are much more real in the games, especially Aunt Sarah and Jimmy the Grape, and they aren't above giving him shit for the slaughter he's doing, even if they agree that he needs to do it. If you can track down a copy of the first game, I HIGHLY recommend it. The second game feels a bit different but is just as good, telling a different sort of story but doing it just as well.

My favorite part of The Darkness?

In the apartment with Jenny, while you are watching the black and white movie. It's To Kill a Mockingbird and you can watch THE ENTIRE FILM with Jenny if you want... all 129 minutes of it. It's both touching and completely unnecessary, but that commitment to the world in which the game takes place is amazing. It actually reminds me of watching the variety show in Metro: Last Light.

Xeodrifter: I'm enjoying this more than (and I hate saying this) Super Metroid. There feels like a better emphasis on exploration, and while I know that sounds strange, whenever I'd play Super Metroid I felt like I was being punished for backtracking. Though the tiny amount of health in this game can make getting through an area harrowing at times, I'm happy with that as a trade off for checking out more areas with less swarms of enemies. The ability to phase between foreground and background is also pretty cool and doubles some sections' area to explore.

Downside is the game seems really short.

Just beat Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Didn't realize I was on the final boss, because he was a hundred times easier than the boss in Donkey Kong Country Returns. That boss was just insane. This boss was challenging, but not so merciless.

The ending was cute. I don't think I'll be going back to sweep up secrets, but it was a lot of fun.

So this just happened.

Relax, he's just horsing around.[DOUBLEPOST=1434289185,1434289005][/DOUBLEPOST]Outlast

Fuckity fuck fuck fucking hell, why do I try to play horror games? I'm scared pantsless even to move for fear of something grabbing me or chasing me. That's the same reason why I haven't progressed far in Alien Isolation, honestly.

With Outlast, I'll admit there have been some legitimately great jump scares that I didn't even see coming.

Though I will say getting caught and dying over and over got frustrating very quickly.

Prison Architect

Or at least the introduction, which I'll admit was compelling and taught me the basic game mechanics.

Unfortunately, when I go to create a new prison of my own, it just throws me right in without any tutorial. I have no idea where to start, where to place my buildings, etc.

This game is sorely lacking an in-game tutorial of some sort.

Start by turning off all incoming prisoners so that you have time to build what you want. Bear in mind, salary for any staff you hire will still have to be paid in the meantime. Then start off by building an entry structure with offices for your warden and officials, a storage room, and a basic fairly large holding cell with a bench and toilet.

There should be "objectives" popping up for you to complete that, if followed, will get your prison up and running.

Borderlands The Pre-Sequel. I picked it up on the steam sale. Glad I did. It's fun, but I'm glad that I didn't pay full retail for it. It feels very "glorified expansion pack"-ish.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

This game was completely under my radar. I only even checked it out because it was super cheap, and it was recommended by Jim Sterling as an underappreciated gem.

This game is legit good, I don't know why it doesn't have more fanfare. It's based on Journey to the West, set in a post apocalyptic world that's being reclaimed by nature. The best way I can describe it is Uncharted meets ICO.

I got this last year's steam sale and I had the same reaction.

Also, Poe, don't know if you know it or not, but Monkey is voiced and mocapped by Andy Serkis
