In an attempt to add a little variety here, I decided I'd catch up on my list of "things I want to watch but can't because they aren't US shows". First up, Thunderbirds are Go! - Ring of Fire. (Episodes 1+2)
I actually really dug this opening two-parter. For those not familiar with the original show, Thunderbirds is about International Rescue, an organization made up of the four Tracy brothers and their allies Brain, Kayo, and Lady Penelope, as they go up against the international criminal The Hood and the disasters he engineers. They do this with amazing flying machines and technology designed to handle any situation, ranging from transport jets carrying cranes to submarines to rocket ships. It's got a real Super Sentai/Power Rangers feel to it at times and is decidedly kid friendly: the focus is on saving people here, not fighting, so you won't see a single punch thrown in this episode.
I feel like they really updated the series while preserving what made it awesome to begin with. It's weird mixture of CGI and models... basically, most of the environments are miniature models like on the original 60's show, but they use CGI for the vehicles (when they are doing something they can't with a model) and for the characters. However, to preserve the feel of the show they decided to give all of the characters designs sort of based on their original puppets and they give them a sort of wood/clay texture to make them match the models when in model heavy scenes (like Tracy Island). This makes it it feel a bit more like watching the original series. However, it's been updated with modern sensibilities: Kayo and Brain aren't walking ethnic stereotypes anymore, with Kayo taking on the job of their security specialist instead of just being some kid. Lady Penelope is exactly the same as before: a 60's era upper class spy with a decidedly lower class driver/bodyguard, but she still feels a bit more useful than in the original series. Even The Hood feels a bit less exploitative.
In any case, Thunderbirds are Go! is pure machine porn at it's finest, with lots of intricate model work and fun action. If you liked the original series and, like me, caught it in syndication during the 80's or are just a fan of the 2004 live action movie, there's plenty to love here. Check it out if you get a chance.
Now I need to find a place to catch Code Lyoko: Evolution. I don't get Kabillion so I can't catch it there... Hmm...
