The EPIC WIN Thread 3: SON OF EPIC

Booyah! Sat in with some fellow writers for a NaNoWriMo write-in tonight. I struggled a bit at first, having some Blank Page Syndrome. This new book I'm working on is completely unrelated to Dill, so it's outside my comfort zone.

But then I got to the crux of the book. Its hook, in other words. And I couldn't stop. Everything just flowed.

By the end, I had 2,000 words written.
I'm now sitting at 4,053

Ideally, by this point, I should be at around 6,668 words (they suggest an average of about 1,667 words per day). So I'm a bit behind. But after tonight, I'm feeling a LOT better about this book.

So two things.

First off, while we were reading a current events magazine, my students and I got into a great discussion about voting. This led to a new persuasive writing assignment in which they will gather information and resources they can use to back up the argument that children should have the right to vote. Student-driven assignments are the best assignments. We start researching and contacting local government officials next week.

Second, I read them a great picture book called Lillian's Right to Vote. I wanted to drive the point home about how important voting was--because it wasn't always an option for everyone. They were really moved. In the middle of everything, one of my kids raises her hand, and we have this exchange:

Kid: I know a movie about slavery.

Me: Okay, well, right now we're talking about the time after that.

Kid: But it's related to the history! It's called, um... Fifty Shades of Gray.

Me: ...... Do you mean Twelve Years a Slave?

Kid: Yeah, that's it!

My veterans day plan. Go to Texas Roadhouse and get a free chicken fried sirloin then go to get a free haircut then hit up all three little ceasers in my area for free pizza (for kids after school). Then if I'm hungry again go to chili's.

My Vet's Day plan is to play around in Fallout 4.

There's a Texas Roadhouse near where I work...score :)

No, we cleaned up all our own garbage. We generated maybe a small grocery bag of garbage (hotdog and condiment wrappers), we hauled out 5 industrial bags worth of trash; ATV bumpers to oil jugs to a couple of 24's of beer cans.

I incorrectly responded to a question about @Squidleybits cousins. But I was only off by a single sibling!!! Considering her cousins number over the @stienman scale, that deserves a whisky for me!
Last we tried to count, my wife has somewhere in the neighborhood of 45 first cousins, and I think I knew more of their names than she did. My family.... I have 7 cousins.

I have one male and one female cousin, the end. My girlfriend has 49 on her mother's side. We don't keep in touch much with her father's side, but they're definitely well over 30 on that side as well. I remember only the cute ones and the ones with cuddly dogs. :p

I have no idea. What I do know is besides my mom, the closest relative is no less than 200 miles away. The next closest under 60, nearly 1000 miles. :(

Straight up first cousins, I have none on my mom's side and at least 30 on my dad's side. If we go into 1st cousin 1x removed...it's a lot more for both.

I have so many cousins and aunts and nieces that it's impossible for me to keep track of them all.

Makes family reunions a slightly uncomfortable experience, too, because a lot of them are really hot.

For the most part, my parent's families stay living in a close huddle, it is only my cousins that are flinging out across the country, and since I was so much older than a lot of them, my husband has managed to meet them all at least once. I don't even think I know the names of all my husband's cousins, not because he has a lot of them, but just because his family is so spread out that even when we visit his parents we aren't likely to see anyone else besides his grandma.

Two flat tires... on a bicycle.

Why is this an epic win? Because both flats happened at the same time -- when I was traveling at 30mph descending a causeway bridge. I was on my normal ride home and hit some unknown object on the bridge. The front tire went completely flat which meant that if I turned it at all, the bike would crash. The back tire was obviously losing pressure but still had some air in it. After a minute of controlled braking, I managed to stop the bike at the foot of the bridge without crashing. And that's why this is an epic win.

My wife went to her first large (more than 200 attendees) convention as merchant. They were super-anxious about not breaking even, everyone hating them, sitting for 20 hours all ronery, etc.

Instead she made over $600 after expenses/taxes :D Now she's looking at gradually ramping up from 1-2 cons/year to as many as possible, and feels validated in other people liking her jewelry and such.

Here we are being dorks

Way late, since this happened two weeks ago, but I kept the brag in the fridge, so it's still good to use.
