Because Charlie isn't the one who wanted to steal the Fizzy Lifting Drinks, it was his grandfather (someone who cared a great deal for and respected) and because he showed remorse about it when his Grandfather was willing to walk off and sell the candy to Slugworth. Charlie was treated like crap and still decided to do the right thing, something we can't be sure the other kids would have done and we KNOW his grandfather wouldn't have done. He was literally willing to surrender something that could have taken care of his family's money problems FOREVER because he didn't feel entitled to it.Well, okay, but you could argue that Charlie isn't really the hero so much as he is an observer. This is the tail end of Willy's journey, not Charlie's. Charlie is supposed to be untarnished, so a lot of people dislike the Fizzy Lifting Drinks scene. It makes Charlie no better than the others, so why does he win? Just because he didn't sell the secrets?
