Minor victory thread

I did not pay anything close to 3/4 million, I can tell you that.

I wasn't going to post the image because I didn't want the price to come up.
You know, it's near impossible to find a house for less than $300k in my immediate area right now. So I am not intimidated by whatever price it was. ;)

Y'all are so cute. 300k for a house. I remember when I thought that was expensive.

Houston is odd. 300 still gets you something decent in the suburbs, but this house is in the city. 500 is pretty average in the nicer in city neighborhoods. It's worth it not to sit 2 hours of my day in traffic every weekday for the rest of my life.

I mean average, too. There are millions and million and a half houses mixed in too. And some in the high threes that look like they haven't been updated since the 60s.[DOUBLEPOST=1455598040,1455597474][/DOUBLEPOST]I'm from SC originally. Real estate there is totally out of whack in the other direction. 100k still gets you a small mansion in a lot of places there.

Two-story in a nice neighborhood runs about $700k-$800k around here. Even run down shitholes in bad neighborhoods will cost $350k.

Normally I'm pretty tentative on skis. I can parallel and all that, but I worry. When we went skiing in December and I was with my son, who is still learning, I found I was able to ski better when I was helping him because I flat out was not thinking about what I was doing. This past weekend we went skiing and I was able to fly down blacks without hesitation at all for the first time. Downside is that my legs are STILL slightly sore, but I'll blame being out of shape again.

And that's in US dollars! I get my house this Saturday and I paid $400K for a 2013 build in the best neighborhood in town. (across a creek from my inlaws....)

My house is 9 years old, and has increased in value by about $100k in that time without us doing anything to it.

It also dropped in value very steeply right after we bought it because of a market crash, so you could argue that it's even more than that.

Remember that the next time you try any kind of martial art/dancing.

Honestly, it has also worked for learning other things too. I became way better at skating, for example, when I was reffing, because I was trying to pay attention to what other people were doing and just had to let my feet work on instinct.

I wanted to spend my day off with another record store run to Pittsburgh. Turns out they're on the wrong side of a rain/snow front and roads are nothing but ice up that way. The ice is due here any time, so I'm not going out at all.

So instead I ordered delivery from the local burger place. Today's special: slow cooked onions, cheddar cheese, horseradish sauce, and au jus on the side.

Chicago Transit Authority is on the turntable. This is a good day. [emoji41]

I think you're right with this. I'm much more relaxed snowboarding when I'm listening to music. I don't like wearing headphones because I want to be able to hear the people around me, but keeping my phone in my chest pocket and using my speaker for my playlist makes a better run.

And I wasn't invited? I'm sad. :(

Speaking of poem translations, just now my supervisor asked me if it was possible to translate a poem in Classical Chinese, from around the 11th century or so, into English, while keeping both the poetic structure and the meaning. She expected me to say "no, not really, you need to sacrifice either the structure or the meaning."

She did not expect me to say, "Give me 20 minutes, I'll take a crack at it."

Nineteen minutes later, I sent back a translated poem. The meter's a bit rough, and the meaning diverges a bit from the source text, but generally speaking I managed to get everything right. Her reaction was "Holy shit I can't believe you did it! Hey everyone, look what he pulled off!"

At this moment, right now, I am seen as a god in my company.[DOUBLEPOST=1455783130,1455782948][/DOUBLEPOST]She also said I am now the company poet laureat, and that I should change my chat icon to this:

I've tried to do stuff like that. I even listened to a podcast about an in-depth book on the subject of translation. But I agree that when you can pull off something close to the original in both meaning and Metameaning, the feeling is very satisfying.

One dose left. I only have to force one of my rats to take medicine ONE MORE TIME.

I know the victory should be when we're actually done and this is jumping the gun, but I'm just so glad this is almost over. It is not fun trying to make a small wriggly rodent take her medicine.

Vacation time!!!!
Deadpool tonight, flights tomorrow, JoCo Caribbean cruise for the next 7 days, ending with a tour of Cape Canaveral.
:drunk:
Woot! No blizzards, no -10 with 60 mile an hour winds, just sun, surf, nerdiness, and good food.
Yay!!

I'm using a 4 year old laptop at work, and we have an extra 27" 4k display no one is using. While the laptop wasn't designed to support 4k, I spent some time yesterday getting it up and running.

Now I can view 3-4 windows of code, with 150+ lines of code in each window.

As a nice aside, the laptop still supports 3 displays, so I've got the laptop display running (silly 1600x900), a 1080p display, and this 4k display in the center.

Despite her not tagging me (boo!), she's even letting me come with her. Apparently for @Dirona that still counts as a vacation for her these days.

;)

Things in the office to "borrow" if nobody else is using them.
1) Extra RAM
2) Extra monitor(s)

Hah, and as a bonus, can you use your laptop's exhaust vent to pop corn?

Welp it was shoddy construction and it was missing parts, but I finally got my fire pit put together so hopefully tonight I can put some wood in it and fire it up!

Minor rant turns into a minor victory. Friend of mine was nearly jumped while out and about last night, his intuition kicked in a he called a friend of mine who was doing a security detail. He lost his coat but managed to get his ID and phone at least without sustaining any injuries. Glad he's ok, wish he would stop drinking with assholes.

Some of my pictures must be selling on Getty :) My iStock balance keeps going up with no new downloads on their site!!

This is a minor victory because we're talking very minor $$. The secret to success on iStock is to have a massive portfolio of stock-like images. Some of mine are a bit out there for stock.

Yeah, but when someone needs an infrared photo of a pile of stuffed bears conquering a mountain of diet coke cans, you've got them covered.
