What are you playing?

FF9 disc 3 is "time for the writers to lose all sense of direction." What had been pretty straightforward goes all over the place, into outer space, into a lot of concepts and backstory that don't affect anything. Disc 4 is disconnected from the rest of the story too, but it's at least focused and interesting. Disc 3 is a mess.

Picked up Bravely Second because I am a weak man.

It's a little slow to get going, but combat's pretty much the same. The new classes are a bit more than just cast/attack, which is cool (mixing element and effect for Black Mage/Wizard, stances for the Duelist sword class, etc). Thankfully you get your full party early on, and things like changing the encounter rate still exist so you can grind at your leisure.

I've quit playing The Division, and have instead started playing Destiny again, checking out all the free content updates I missed while I was away.

If you are looking specifically for a fun coop ps4 shooter, and have to choose between $60 for The Division, or $40 for Destiny, its expansion, and all of the dlc, choose Destiny.

Basically exactly what my brother did, too. Played Division constantly for maybe 3 weeks or so, and now he's right back on Destiny and having a lot more fun.

Been playing a hell of a lot of X-Com, Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within now that I have a rig that can run it... I played 2 missions of stock Enemy Within, went looking for voice mods (because I have issues with playing soldiers whose voices sound almost all the same)... and then I accidentally Long War.

Just did my first rage-restart, after squad-wiping for the SECOND time on a landed terror ship that also accounted for all my interceptors.... FUCK this game is hard, just starting out.

I'm such an idiot.

No spoilers, but I discovered something strange in Dark Souls 3. Investigating it led to one of the weirdest experiences I've had in one of these games, and a dialogue choice. Thinking I could just answer the way I wanted later, I declined this choice. Well, that locked me out of whatever was going on, so I have to wait until my next playthrough or new game + to see what was up.

Fucking hell. I should've known I wouldn't get a second chance. Most NPCs only ask a thing once.

I also fucked up a covenant order, so I'm locked out of two of them now. Yay.

DS3: "Man, this game is amazing! I've been frustrated all day because I couldn't get past this one boss fight!"
DS3: "Man, this game is amazing! I accidentally mis-clicked once and I'm locked out of a part of the game I wanted to explore, whelp, guess I'll have to replay the whole thing!"

While I certainly don't think everyone should experience everything every time - I actively hate that mechanic in Oblivion and Skyrim for example - I have to say I know why I don't play DS games :p

I'm not going to replay it before I finish it :p. It's just that my wife and I were really into what was going on at that part, and me fucking it up at the end felt anti-climactic. But there are
four
endings, so I'm not going to worry about whether that would've led to a secret one. I'm just going to keep going and I'll replay the game when I finish. Maybe what I did will still affect things.

I can see why the auto-save that saves before you even see the consequence of your action, thus you can't undo it, would discourage people.

IF there's one thing I learned from Esc's game-play style when I watched his Alien Isolation Let's Plays, he tends to fuck it up a lot.

;)

Actually, I'm really impressed at how well I've done gameplay-wise in this one. No shield, winning a ton at PVP. I finished the game tonight, so I'm already in the NG+. I broke sequence and now I'm almost to where I can access what I screwed up, so tomorrow wife and I will see if it's worth it. I'm surprised I'm even doing this well on NG+. I've been too chickenshit to try it on other games in the franchise, but now that I've been pushed and see what I can do, I'm eager to give it a try on the others.

As for Dark Souls 3, just a fantastic game. I loved it, even in those moments I hated it :p. Once I'm done checking out this one thing on NG+, I'll probably roll a new character.

And now I can finally load up the Dark Souls 3 soundtrack from CD to iPod since there aren't any more spoilers to be had!

...

Oh, this lists a couple bosses I never fought. Apparently there was another area of the game I didn't know about. A pretty large one ...

Still really enjoying my Bounty Hunter in SWTOR. The 2nd companion is basically a con man who hooks up with your group to avoid being hunted by the many, many criminal organizations he swiped a fortune from (and then had to spend to keep ahead of their retribution). He's got some funny lines, lots of snarky, and even his automated chatter can be amusing. One option is to just send your companion off to sell your Vendor Trash, which is useful if your inventory is full when you're in the middle of nowhere. Gault (the 2nd companion) goes, "Bye" or "Whatever" or "Finally, something to do." His tone of voice sells it.

Dark Souls 3: I loaded my NG backup from a USB so I could go to another area I hadn't seen.

Side note: found out it didn't matter how I answered that question from earlier--the result is the same, so I hadn't locked myself out of anything. I just thought I had. Derp.

Anyway, new area reveals some pretty cool story bits involving the first Dark Souls, among them debunking a huge and widely-accepted fan theory.

Solaire is not the first son of Gwyn.

I'm a little disappointed, but now I don't feel so bad about certain events I've failed to make happen in the first game.

According to my brother, who has become a walking DS encyclopedia, this was debunked early on because

Gwyn's first son was trained by Ornstein in the spear, something Solaire never used. The main thing going now, I hear, is trying to find out what exactly happened to Solaire. Nobody knows which fate was made canon from DS1, and you can find his equipment in DS3, along with his favored spell scroll.

This is true, but

since the actual identity was never revealed, people considered Solaire still to be a candidate. Now that we have a face and a fight against the son himself, it's irrefutably not Solaire. Solaire's gear can be traded for from the new crow's nest, so I'm guessing they ate him :p.

The big surprise about all this for me was last night, thinking about the boss fight ...

Gwyn's first son rides a big drake around. He lives on a summit where dragons are worshiped. And his item descriptions say he sided with the dragons in the ancient war. His gesture when you kill his drake indicate he had a deep love for dragons.

And that's when it clicked--he's the father of Priscilla the Crossbreed.

My brother's idea is that

a large, lightning-infused dragon you kill might be Solaire. It's in an area that has nothing to do with the lightning element, and upon its death you receive Lightning Stake (I think that's the name), Solaire's favored spell as he found throwing lightning to be cowardly. My brother thinks that the leech that Solaire attaches to himself in DS1 if you don't reach him in time not only drove him mad, but warped his being into this dragon due to Solaire himself already being absurdly powerful, considering his supposedly magic equipment was actually just normal gear he adorned with the sun symbol.

"Dragon" is being generous. That thing is a big ugly worm.

But considering the location, and what effect said location tends to have on people there, your brother may be right.

I've started a new character for Dark Souls 3; going to aim for the hard-to-get ending now. Problem is, I'm torn between playing as a sorcerer or a cleric. My wife had the idea of doubling up on roles, which would prove a unique challenge since this is the first Dark Souls where I actually like the magic, but I'm not sure it's a great idea yet. Right now I have a sorcerer and a cleric each at the beginning of post-tutorial area, so I'll have to figure out what I want to do tomorrow.

Not really big into the whole lore of DS, but I can say this, I fucking wish tail weapons were brought back. Tail weapons were awesome.

The worst Dark Souls enemy by far is ... server maintenance downtime after a new patch. :( Which wouldn't have been a big deal if I'd still been screwing around on the High Wall with my new character, but I'd just gotten to the Undead Settlement and was ready to play with others.

My new sorcerer is pretty much my dex character with magic on top. That won't last the whole game once my raw-infused rapier becomes underpowered, but right now it's nice to be able to blast from afar and dance around up-close with familiar moves and effect.
