Today, I got a case where the Chinese-to-English translator translated mercury as hydrargyrum and lead as plumbum.

Not gonna lie, I'm actually rather impressed they knew the classical names of those elements. Unfortunately, this is not a document in Latin, so no points for the translator.

Not really a win or a rant, but might be informative to someone. I usually DIY everything. The house we just bought is severely short on attic insulation, so I did some research. It seems that it's probably about 20% cheaper to hire a contractor than to DIY for insulation. Especially since I'd have to rent a trailer or a truck to get everything to my house. The contractor is coming tomorrow to blow in an additional R30. It will only take them about an hour, too, which is a lot less than it would've taken me.

It's interesting how the market plays out. Insulation, like drywall, has so many contractors and they get discounts and it's cheap labor that if you're doing a big project it's hard to justify doing it yourself. Small projects are cheaper, but otherwise it's not always cheaper to diy.

Some things it's worth doing yourself. Sometimes the equipment, material, and expertise justify hiring a professional. A crew that specializes in doing insulation, that has all the proper safety gear, tools, and familiarity with the materials and building codes, is worth the expense.

I DIY'd my attic insulation.
Of course, I also put in a semi-removable platform with a lip atop that insulation (for storage), so there was that.

On the other hand, I've had times in the past where I've contracted something out and been disappointed with the result. You do have to be careful, and often you do get what you pay for.

Yeah, I worry about that. It's one of the reasons I prefer to DIY. Seems like a lot of contractors cost-cut so much that quality becomes an issue.

Animated sitcom made by the same dude who did "Megas XLR", Goat was even in it. I just find it...really weird how almost none of the actors on that show had real careers after it was cancelled.

Yeah, but it was still on TV, you'd think that would land a FEW more casting calls.

On the subject of MTV shows, not a lot of people on Daria went on to much stuff after the show was cancelled either. Curse.
