In the last week there have been three instances with people I work with. Two people had their houses burn down - separate instances - and then there was a house exploding under suspicious circumstances.

A family was being evicted and a property inspector let them back in to get some of their stuff. Couple days later the inspector goes back to do a final once-over of the house and it goes boom. Inspector is killed. Turns out she worked with me for years as our cleaning lady.

Holy shit, dude. Duck and cover.

At first I thought that said "Elvira as a ginger" and UNGHGAWDIJUST

You didn't know?
I'd fill the generation gap.

Ooo, look...now you're making him bust out the good orgasm .GIFs.
And even that one isn't that old. I found more but I'd have to join Pinterest. And they don't allow you to see shit unless you join so fuck them.
There are ways.
It's not that difficult.

There were a ton of images on Pinterest!

Today, I got a case where the Chinese-to-English translator translated mercury as hydrargyrum and lead as plumbum.

Not gonna lie, I'm actually rather impressed they knew the classical names of those elements. Unfortunately, this is not a document in Latin, so no points for the translator.

Not really a win or a rant, but might be informative to someone. I usually DIY everything. The house we just bought is severely short on attic insulation, so I did some research. It seems that it's probably about 20% cheaper to hire a contractor than to DIY for insulation. Especially since I'd have to rent a trailer or a truck to get everything to my house. The contractor is coming tomorrow to blow in an additional R30. It will only take them about an hour, too, which is a lot less than it would've taken me.

It's interesting how the market plays out. Insulation, like drywall, has so many contractors and they get discounts and it's cheap labor that if you're doing a big project it's hard to justify doing it yourself. Small projects are cheaper, but otherwise it's not always cheaper to diy.

Some things it's worth doing yourself. Sometimes the equipment, material, and expertise justify hiring a professional. A crew that specializes in doing insulation, that has all the proper safety gear, tools, and familiarity with the materials and building codes, is worth the expense.

I have never heard of plumbum until your post. That's impressive.
There's a reason they're called "plumbers."
I learned quite a few of 'em, but that's because in high school chemistry I was like, "Why do some of these abbreviations match up but not others?"

I DIY'd my attic insulation.
Of course, I also put in a semi-removable platform with a lip atop that insulation (for storage), so there was that.

On the other hand, I've had times in the past where I've contracted something out and been disappointed with the result. You do have to be careful, and often you do get what you pay for.

Yeah, I worry about that. It's one of the reasons I prefer to DIY. Seems like a lot of contractors cost-cut so much that quality becomes an issue.

Is there some sort of curse attached to "MTV's Downtown"? I looked up the actors on IMDB, according to there not many of the actors went on to new projects.

What's MTV Downtown? Was it like their "man on the street" segment or something?
Animated sitcom made by the same dude who did "Megas XLR", Goat was even in it. I just find it...really weird how almost none of the actors on that show had real careers after it was cancelled.

I have vague memories of Megas XLR. When was the Downtown MTV show aired?

So it was a show that lasted 3 1/2 months, 17 years ago?

I mean I guess it really didn't make an impression, so maybe that's why the cast never went on to anything else?
Yeah, but it was still on TV, you'd think that would land a FEW more casting calls.

On the subject of MTV shows, not a lot of people on Daria went on to much stuff after the show was cancelled either. Curse.
