Former President and Convicted Felon Trump Thread

In of itself, it's not that strange of a thing. Typically to fill a position that requires an elite level of specialization you have to pick from a select few groups. And a waiver is issued so the person can then work and not ignore their previous employer. But to withhold for so long what the waivers specified and that they even existed is well, ridiculous.
I figure the way that political appointments work, their cronies will get in somehow, and thus by applying almost any rules, you're trying to hold back a flood with a box of Kleenex. I apply this to all governments everywhere.

So... I hope none of you guys were fans of Paris or agreements, or agreements made in Paris, or anything like that.

Yeah, about that:

If you listen veeery carefully to the lousy audio, right about at the 0:30 mark, he says the following:
I believe there's climate change. I believe there's been climate change since the beginning of time. Do I think man has some impact? Yeah, of course. Can man change the entire universe? No. Why do I believe that? Well, as a Christian, I believe that there is a creator in God who is much bigger than us. And I'm confident that, if there's a real problem, he can take care of it.
Yes, really.

Ya, about that: In one graph, why the #ParisAgreement is useless

Also notable from that article:
Worse, even if we DID stay in it, (and all the other countries too) that .05°C savings is likely to get lost in the noise, since global temperature measurements are rounded. For example, in the USA, NOAA rounds the high and low temperature to the nearest whole degree Fahrenheit (0.55°C, a value over ten times greater than the .05°C savings Paris offers)

For Global temperature, GHCN data for example, NOAA rounds to the nearest tenth of a degree C, (0.1°C) TWICE the value of .05°C savings Paris offers.

Even the best case scenario out of the Paris Climate Accord will get lost in the data rounding.
You are getting worked up about a rounding error.

Why did I think this happened a week ago anyway? Everyone on Twitter seemed like this came out of left field, but it felt like this was already being talked about before Memorial Day.

It was. There was a week or so of hype before the "big announcement," and some held out hope that he wasn't really going to do it.

Damn, I'm not psychic.

Actually, this would be the worst year to be psychic. In any case, I think some people missed the hype and got taken by surprise.

You have just become attuned to the trump presidency. No what what the decision to be made he will make the worst possible decision.

Waffles or pancakes for breakfast? Close all military bases in eastern Europe!

What the fuck are you talking about?????

Reality doesn't get affected by us rounding things to make it easier for our brains to process the data....
I apologize. I should have said that the "result" will be drowned out by a lack of precision in the input data rather than a rounding error in the presentation. There's literally no way to know if it actually had an effect because it was predicted to be so small an effect to begin with.
And for fucks sakes, doing something about it is always better then not doing anything at all because no one wants to do enough. You have to start somewhere.
No it isn't actually. A church I attended moved away from paper cups because they were told it was better for the environment to use ceramic and to wash them... except it takes between 40 and 1000 (or NEVER if your dishwasher isn't super-efficient) washes to break even. And if you break the cup and need to replace it before break-even, you're worse off. So doing "something" dumb can be actually worse than doing nothing for the environment.

"Doing something" in this circumstance is basically a "hand LOTS more money to the governments of the world" (carbon taxes) "and we'll be sure to save the planet... somehow." Oh and remember, Europe/Canada/USA will be kneecapping their economies, while China will "for sure, for real" do "something" in 2030... really. *wink*wink* (they have no commitments or requirements before then)

This is also completely separate from the number of people literally deciding between paying their electricity bill, and EATING. Look for "Energy Poverty" to be the next big "thing" in the next 10-20 years. Or sooner, depending on how far down the rabbit hole your state/province/country is.

So no, even if you believe in Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming full-on, doing nothing can be better than doing something stupid.

I'm pretty sure the end result needs to be noticeable with the naked eye if we're to actually avoid fucking ourselves over as a species.

As for being better to do nothing... not if doing nothing fucks you over. Even if you do the wrong thing, getting started will at least allow you to get some experience and momentum, which is pretty important if you want to do something (and anyway, your own hart shows that it's a bit better, so the example you gave is kind of off-topic...).

Not sure if this belongs in the Trump thread since I don't know if Trump ordered it. Also don't know if this is in response to the London attack or just another in the bombings from the past weeks months years.

A couple issues with that...

I don't see any indication that that was the US (googling says it was actually Iraqi military)
I don't know that is a hospital, but I guess it could be. Or, since it flies an IS flag, even if it once WAS a hospital, it could be anything now - an ammo dump, a staging ground, a stronghold, you name it.
White Phosphorus is only banned when used against civilians. Its more common, ignored use is to create smokescreens - which is not banned.
and finally,
as the film was apparently shot by the IS, I take anything it purports to be with a huge crystalline boulder of salt.

But just to be on the safe side, if there are any guys around there named Martin Walker, and with the rank of Captain, lock them up for the time being.

If it is the U.S., probably shouldn't be using white phosphorus because we're pretty good at getting extra civilians wherever bombs are dropped. The other stuff, no idea. I think all there is is the video right now.

@Gruebeard mattis is the secretary of defense and basically the only competent and qualified person in the trump cabinet. Trump complains that the democrats try to block everyone he appoints but mattis got near-unanimous support from both sides.

Also, Trump is complaining about Democrats obstructing appointments to positions there aren't any nominees for.

Thank you.

Also, I wish to apologize for abusing the
as I didn't actually need anything explained to me; I was using
to jokingly say that I am astounded that someone (in government, no less!) would want to know the facts about something before giving their opinion. It's mind boggling.

This is a real thing that is happening.

I'm reminded of that scene in the opening episode of Samurai Jack where Jack lands in the future and sees Aku's influence everywhere, even including a giant billboard displaying a video of Aku eating/endorsing a hot dog, like Aku has become so pervasive that he's not only the overlord of the entire planet, but he also shows up all the time on talk shows, hosting reality television, shilling products, guest-starring in movies, etc.

Hahahaha

You know, I'm not sad that Trump hasn't had his Twitter taken away. He hasn't yet truly realized that anything he says on Twitter can be used against him, so the idea of him live tweeting the Comey hearing is popcorn to me.

My wife and I were in Egypt in 2010 when Mubarak was still in power. Not quite the hot-dog thing, but the little wedges of cream cheese at breakfast were "El Presidente" (or something, spelling not important) branded. LOTS of "president" brand stuff, and the occasional picture of Mubarak as well.

TIL - Loblaws has expanded into Egypt.

You're probably referring to Président, which has nothing to do with Mubarak. It's just a cheese/butter/etc brand (their camembert is fantastic price/quality-wise). I've seen their stuff in hotels and airplane food before.

In western Washington, if you want brie or camembert, and you don't want to go to the fancy cheese store, you eat Président (or the store brand) - and if you want feta, your choices are Président or Athenos. Along with Tillamook, Sargento, and Kraft, it's one of the most recognized brands of cheese west of the Cascades.

Good thought, but nope. We asked specifically, and were told about how much of the economy was run by the Army (the example they gave was how they manufactured washing machines in their factories as only one thing about how "in" to consumer goods they were), and that was just another offshoot of it.

Oh, we have President cheeses all over the place here! Their brie is pretty decent.

...It is so sad that this is the first time this thread has made me genuinely happy.
