The EPIC WIN Thread 3: SON OF EPIC

I've been following a story from Thailand where a group of youth were believed to have been lost in a cave. Over a week of diving and caving activity by rescuer proved fruitless in finding them until today, ten days after they entered the cave, and it appears they will all be rescued soon.

Looks like halforums ate the link and presented just the video. The article is here.

Rather than uploading all the pictures and copying and pasting everything here, I'll just share my Instagram pic with my story from this morning. It was probably one of the best mornings I've had in my life. I can't even describe how wonderfully tranquil it felt. (Also, the paragraphs are properly spaced out on the post itself. Don't know why the hotlink has to stuff it all together like that.)

Crap, I just tried uploading the panoramic shot I took, but I got an error message saying it was too big. So here's a Facebook link for the shot. I made it public for all to see.

I made a list of things to accomplish this summer, and last night, I ticked off my last item---the one I thought I'd punk out on. I did 5 minutes of standup.

This isn't something I necessarily want to pursue, but I've been telling myself I should do it just for fun and to see how it feels. I had a friend there who kind of pushed me into it (in a wonderful way, not a bad way), and a lot of the local comedians I really respect were there and gave me useful feedback. So maybe I'll try again and go to the less forgiving open mic that happens on Wednesday when none of my friends are there...to see how I *really* do.

But for now, I just feel great. Refreshed. Changed. I haven't taken a leap quite this big since our improv troupe started performing in 2017. Fear is good.

You're like a little, less jaded me.

Congrats! Now we can talk shit about the non-comedians together!

I'm *getting* there, as I continue to learn how hard it is to get a goddamn audience. There are people who live 5 minutes away from our downtown venues who won't come because it's "too far" or "too dangerous." Booooooo, you boring shits.

And you can only hit up your friends so many times before they stop giving a shit and just avoid you.

Improv audiences are really, REALLY hard to get as are open mic audiences that care for anyone but the person they showed up for.

She works in a Louisiana private school. Now, if it were a public Louisiana school...
True story. During a drill/meeting shortly after Sandy Hook, one of the teachers made the point that we're probably more of a kidnapping/hostage target for ransom money. So...silver lining?

My wife's degree is in Elementary Education from LSU. She did her student teaching on England AFB in Alexandria, she did a couple of week observing at a couple of public schools... it was... eye-opening to say the least.

Yeah I had some crazy experiences in the small towns outside of Baton Rouge. Women teaching gifted classes who could barely speak, campuses in horrible disrepair, mothers whipping their kids in the hallway, and the angriest teacher I've ever met in my life. I have never heard such screaming.

Didn't know where to post this, but I spent the last few days going through the work of replacing my moms old ceiling fan.
A few weeks ago the motor stopped turning in a late 90's era ceiling-hugger bright brass bargain special my dad put in. Over the last weekend I got from my mother the characteristics she wanted in her new fan, went to my work(I work for home improvement/building supply company) and picked out one of our nice Hunter ceiling fans. I figured it would be a simple change out but upon removal of the dead fan found a 3.5 inch round mudring sticking through the ceiling! This meant that the ceiling box would require replacement. I went back and got a key-saw, a old-work fan box, small pry bar, and other supplies. Returned home and began sawing the drywall out around the box. After 5 hours of working chunks of drywall out I found that the original builder of the house had installed a 4 inch square junction box with welded stud bracket, extended the cleats of the bracket into the stud and put lag screws through the bracket into the stud. upon removing the screws I found that they had additionally added a crossbar above the box and secured it to the studs with ringshank nails. I now spent another 3 hours prying at the brackets to get my pry-bar under the nails and yank them out of the studs. At this point i began assembling the new fan box's bracket and sliding it up through the hole to install, this was fairly painless except for one thing that was noticed upon installing the box to the bar. there was 2 sheets of 1/2 inch drywall on the ceiling @_@. This required a 1/2 inch of washers, due to the fact I was using an old work cleat box. So that was Sunday. Monday I returned from work with more supplies and began the work of building and installing the fan top to bottom. This took from 4 pm until 9 pm due to some issues with wiring. I got everything all done turned the power back on and....nothing. Took the canopy back down and checked every connection to find the factory strip on the power lead for the fan was to short!, re-stripped and reset connections and tried again. SUCCESS!
and now the final product:

After my schooling getting fucked over by clerical snafu, I'm officially accepted and PAID FOR for January. Slight hiccup but whatever. Good bye police world, hello meat and food and then, hopefully, goodbye Edmonton, hello Calgary...I guess and FINALLY living near my soul-mate and doing away with long distance bullshit.

I got in to the course I applied for back at the beginning of the summer! (It starts in October.)

I get to go back to school (part-time), and within a year I will be able to supervise student ministers during their residency/internship/whatever. I'll certainly be better than the idiot I got saddled with! I've wanted to get this certification for years, but you need years of experience to even be able to apply, and now I can, so I did, and I'm in! Yay!
