[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

Cause of the problem, the ancient clay water pipes in our area have roots growing into them all over the place and it was a grease build up on the roots. Crew's cleared it out and are going to come in tomorrow to rotor out the rest of the roots, but it's only a temp fix, the roots will grow back.

I'm playing the dealing with insurance companies game. I LOVE THIS GAME.

I GET TO LOSE OUT ON MY PLANS TO GO INTO THE MOUNTAINS FOR NEW YEARS! At least my wonderful lady is understanding and is coming up here to spend the next few days with me.

Laid off for a month now. Not a single callback. I've put in close to 30 applications, which is scraping the bottom of the barrel for my rather specialized skills. On the bright side, there have been no rejection letters either. Some of my former co-workers have received quite a few of those. I've also gotten about 4 "congratulations, your resume was forwarded to the hiring manager" emails, but nothing else. I've got good prospects at some national labs and universities, but neither move quickly, and the latter wouldn't even start until August even if I got the job.

My next step is to branch out to software development for the time being. I don't want to be a developer, but I can do it, and I have to eat. This sucks :(

It's so agonizing waiting to hear about a job. I hope something comes up soon, in a position you'd find preferable.

Yesterday was such an up & down day. First, I had my mom's heart doctor visit. It was our bi-annual "do we kill our mom" meeting. If the pacemaker hits 25% usage (pacemaker are rated as a percentage of use when the heart needs help, so the lower the better) then we have to decide whether to turn it off or leave it on. The last three visits were 11%, then 14%, then 16%. Yesterday it was at 9% as she's been getting up and walking a lot - looking for an exit from the home, we're told.

And then I get home and find a letter in the mail telling me that they finally are going to start garnishing my check again for student loans. If you remember, they were doing it before and I got out from under the garnishment only to have them triple my payment amount. I couldn't pay it, so here we go again. Now my paychecks will be going down like $500 a month. I knew it was going to happen, but bad timing, man. New truck, the place we're living costs $400 a month more than we were paying before, my wife is making half what she was before.

And I put this in minor rant because at least I still have a job.

This just happened to me two weeks ago. It was about as bumpy as going over a large speed bump a little too fast. I had my two kids and our very old dog in the car, all fine. Our bumper didn't get damaged and the pickup, which was much heavier than our car, got its bumper bent back a bit. The guy was in the truck, parked, at the time. He's claiming injury. *eye roll*

Welp, off to spend 30min shoveling a foot of snow out of the driveway in -8F/-22C weather so I can drive my son to school.
Thank goodness I did all the sidewalks yesterday when it was still a balmy 9F/-13C.

Let's start the week off right with a flat tire.
Sat morning when I climbed in, my car told me I had TWO flat tires.
I mean, I knew it was mostly lying because Boyle's Law, but after shoveling and having to stop to get gas, I still looked at it and said, "I really don't have time for you this morning."

Oh good, school was canceled as of last night, so I don't have to drive him after all.
Sure wish someone had thought to notify us about that. Our school's app sucks.
Well I needed a clean driveway anyway, and I still have to shower, go pick up meds and buy milk (if there's any left) and get my oil changed before I have to be to work in less than 4hrs.

...I'm surprised you had school today. A good chunk of the US doesn't have school today for MLK/Civil Rights Day.
As I said just above, they canceled school last night, we just didn't find out about it until about 10min before we would've had to leave.
Besides, I live in rural-ville. Ain't nobody gonna cancel school because of him.

I do admit that I miss where I grew up, which had enough of a Jewish population that we got all kinds of holidays nobody else had ever heard of.

Do your local radio stations/morning shows not list off school closures? I never listen/watch them, but as a kid we always had them on at the slightest bit of snow regardless of whether or not cancellation was actually likely.

Now every god damned phone in the house will ring to tell us the second school is cancelled. (Once the district called everyone at 5am to say that school would NOT be cancelled and holy shit did they catch hell)

I remember those days. However, these days you can’t get local television without a cable (and box) subscription, which we don’t have, and I don’t even think I could lay my hands on a radio without searching for half an hour.

We have an app put out by the school district, and it is supposed to notify us, but it frequently does not notify us until after we manually go into the app, at which point it will ding and put up a message with “Sent yesterday at 10:00p.” Which is dumb.

I would have opened that app as soon as I woke up in the morning and saw a foot of snow on the driveway, just to be on the safe side.

Going to Jewish school we even got lots of the minor holidays off. I had a few years where I didn't have a 5 day week until mid-October.

Weather here is going to suck today. Schools are closing. Universities included. But not OUR university.

Oh, and I didn't find out about all of this until I was half way here. So here I am. The few, the proud, the People Who Showed Up.

Ughhhh. I hate being that person. A few years back I had to park down the street at a McDonald's and walk the rest of the way to the office in my boots and snowboarding pants because, even though the street and the office lot were unplowed, "yes, we were open".

I hope they have lots of hot beverages for you to make up for it!

To all the parents who send their teacher MULTIPLE emails about a student’s grade on one single assignment over a fucking holiday, I say go fuck yourself.

How NOT to get a guy's attention on an online dating site.

(Seriously, why message me at all if it's to just be judgemental?)

Her profile is even worse, mostly ranting about how she will not date a guy who has kids in any way, even if he's a deadbeat dad.

Best quote?

"Is your child dead? Maybe we'll work out."

Thanks to your phone's color scheme, for a split second I saw the following:

"Blah teach me yoga blah"

"...take the doctors [sic] advice..."

"...if I had children"

"And, I, I'm
WERTYUIO
SDFGHJKL"

...and I was right there with Tress with "Hey...she sounds insane."
And then I realized it was just your keyboard.
But she still sounds insane.
