[Brazelton] Twitter

"nothing has changed with moderation" except the people doing the moderating had no idea what rules were still be enforced and which weren't, they were warned there'd be massive layoffs, and all management was gone. Idiot.

Don't forget how the company became owned by a guy known to love fascists and hate speech

But his freedom of speech! He should be allowed to buy a social media company for the express purpose of maintaining right-wing access to broadcast their hate speech, and suffer no consequences whatsoever!

You see, when Musk says something and uses his wealth to force everyone to go along with it, that's freedom. When average people band together and petition advertisers to drop Twitter, and those advertisers listen to the people, that's oppression.

(a.k.a. "I'm only a free market champion when the market does what *I* want, not when it does something I don't like. Then it should be restricted.")

Or maybe they saw some crazy ass ego maniac, who decided the salvation of Twitter would be to charge for blue check marks, take over and fire a shit load of people. Maybe they decided that company probably doesn’t have a great long term outlook, and they decided to spend their advertising money elsewhere.

Or they hate free speech I guess.

New theory. Musk never intended for Twitter to remain in operation. This whole thing purely an expensive attempt to shut down ElonJet by murdering the entirety of Twitter to do so.
Kind of like how Herr Starr burned down an entire insane asylum in Preacher just to kill one guy without it looking like that one guy was the target.

And the newest dumb idea? According to a NYT article, Musk is floating the idea of charging users for the ability to DM celebrities (and Twitter would take a percentage).

He does know that he reeks of desperation, right?

You know how the villain in an animated movie will do something profoundly stupid and then melodramatically turn towards the protagonist and declare, "...Oops!" with a smile and grin hinting that perhaps it wasn't really such a mistake after all?
That. It reeks of that.

Tbh I don’t think that’s a totally dumb idea. It’s at least something that brings in revenue and doesn’t change the site if you don’t want to use it.

Depends... Who are "celebrities"? Everyone with a blue check? They'll have moderated DM's and harassing any non-paying user is okay because, well, if you don't want death threats and dick pics just become a paying user?

Yes and allowing people to DM celebrities - even if real - is a wonderful way to promote free speech. You know, of the people sending death threats about things they don’t like. Oh that celebrity said something political against my guy? Better pay to harass them!

Genius.

If people could only DM certain celebrities after paying for this feature, why would they bother to pay for it all?
My guess would be you could pay a fee to send a message to a specific celebrity for a fee the celebrity sets. Almost like Cameo, but instead of requesting videos, just messaging them.

The amount of replies to that thread boiling down to "I have no clue what an accessibility team does but I'm going to assume you're a bunch of libtards pushing propaganda lololol" just makes me weep for human kind. Can we just have Putin drop the bombs and get it all over with?

I've held on long enough, but I think I'm going to delete my Twitter account this weekend. Before it all changes on Monday. I just don't trust Musk and this rushed rebuilding of code. It sounds like it'll be a complete nightmare.

I wanted to stick around to watch it burn, but I don't think it'll be safe or secure come Monday when all these changes go through.

I deleted my twitter account months ago when news first started that Elon was trying to buy it. It was one of my few social media accounts remaining.

I feel a little bit like an old fogey when I tell people I'm not on social media... any of them, but goddamn do I feel a lot better about it.

Honestly, Twitter and Halforums have been my main sources of online interactions. I have Facebook and Instagram, but I barely use either these days for various reason. No interest in Tiktok.

Even Halforums, I don't post as often as Twitter. I often copy/pasted Twitter rants onto here. I love this place but it's not as lively by comparison.
