Am I the only one who thinks this "game" is stupid? It reminds me of the boredom of Spore. Initially cool but very boring very fast.

No, there are at least 129 other people who agree with you.

Anytime I feel compelled to maybe give it a shot, I go play the Sims instead. Scratches a similar itch.

I just wish I had a gaming rig that could handle the multiplayer better. The multiplayer alpha was my reason for buying it, working as a team to build massive stuff, fighting off zombies etc but the MP server code is more strain than the single player

@Dave

Where Spore was actually boring as shit, Minecraft is awesome. Plus there are several mods out there that can make the game more fun, I've found out.

Example: a mod that lets you have fire, ice, egg, and exploding arrows!

I think the reason I like it, as well as the reason I enjoyed parts of spore, is the building aspect. As I tinker around in the game and view others creations I get inspired. Creature building in spore was always more enjoyable for me than the game. Minecraft also reminds me of a very basic dwarf fortress which, while I was always interested in, I never actually got around to learning how to play.

Be very carfeful whilst transporting lava that you don't accidently drop the stuff in your house. You'd think I would have learned from the other guy. Not a total loss though. It really only managed to spread to the roof of my smaller hut and the sky bridge. Now it just makes them seem more open. I'll probably either leave them open or just put glass up there now. I'm going to be remaking the floor of the bridge stone though so this doesn't happen again.
This. I lost 80% of my sky house due to a lava mishap. I thought I was okay since the lava was surrounded by water, but I didn't consider the embers.

Since WoW was boring me last night I figured out how to finally get this game. I have to say the game does have a strange charm. My only issue with it so far is the weird fact that, even though the graphics seems rather "meh" it eats up my laptop worst then WoW.

Last night I built a fortress inside a mountain, making a pretty good system of tunnels. I really wish my pick didn't break so quickly though. I also made a stair system to the top of the mountain and plan to move out to other areas sometime soon to make a real shelter.

Though, that will have to be later. I got a lot of stuff to do today. :p

I have a friend at work who thinks similarly. He says the game looks like a hideous time suck (it is) and he thinks it is clever but would not be willing to invest that kind of time in something where you couldn't "blow some shit up." Then again, he's more of a CoD/WoW/Starcraft player, and so the lack of adrenaline-fueled action and big explosions probably isn't doing it for him.

If you choose a house because it has plenty of garage space, is in a good area where it will appreciate, is close to work, is in a good neighborhood with good schools, etc., then you probably won't like the game.
If, however, you choose a house because the basement will let you move in all your woodworking equipment, because you enjoy a good fixer-upper, because you have awesome plans for decorating the great room, or because you are positive you could put together an awesome Hallowe'en/Christmas display on the roof/lawn, then you'll probably enjoy it.

Differ'nt strokes, and all that.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to make everlasting lava. If you don't mind using them, there are tools available that can be used to edit your inventory if you really want that much obsidian.

That might have to do with it generating world. The game generates immediate surroundings based on when you explore. Once you settle down, your immediate surroundings will already be generated, so the game should use less resources.

If you find the game is still using too many resources even when not randomly generating the world, try lowering your Render Distance by pressing F until you reach your desired distance or selecting one that you like in the Options.

That works, but you don't even need to do that. You can usually find source block magma streams deep in the earth, that will give you like 20-30 Obsidian if you dump water on them. Just takes a bit of work to find them.

The graphics are "meh" but the worldmap is huge. The game will eat every CPU cycle you give it. Fortunately, even my laptop seems to be able to run it well for the most part... but even my badass quad core 8800gtx rig sometimes stutters right when I start a new world ..

But my work computer just. can't. handle it. I'm lucky to get 2fps.

This is why you don't use java for serious applications, I'm afraid.

Today I made probably the most useless builidng I've built yet. a little tiny chapel like thing with flaming crosses on it (Yeah, I have to find another religious symbol to make in torches without invoking the KKK) with a small golden altar inside, full of water and with little hole on top of one of the walls with an egg in it.
It's the "Water temple on Creeper Hill". It seems I basically like to invent a wacky religion for my character...

I am resisting the urge to invest in this, because I already don't have time to play the games that I own....... but y'all are making this seem fun as hell!

Well, a lot of the screen shots are out of date, since I've put some work in, build some new things, and also updated my game graphically to a Painterly Pack. Images are going to be behind spoiler tags to keep the post small.

My central hub. It would have been larger if not for the fact that the game wouldn't let me go any higher near the top. One of my things to do is to take out the second block up and replace them with glass. In the left of the image, you can see part of my treetop walkways. To the right is one of my bridges.

Here's the ground floor. Every floor is made out of glass, with cobblestone being used for areas with stair cases and anywhere I needed a pressure plate. Part of my motivation for upgrading the graphics is so you would actually be able to see through the floors without it looking like a jumbled mess.

Here's the entrance to the hub from my treetop walkways.

Here's my tree top farm. Because the mountain slope is high up relative to the farm, it's not completely safe from Skeletons. Mostly, this is for the novelty of growing trees on top of other trees.

I haven't looked at the source code, but I'm getting a very strong vibe that his entire rendering pipeline is in java. I don't think he's using opengl, so the CPU is doing all the rendering.

It's not terrible, given everything is pretty much square, but it makes the game painful to play on lesser machines, even with a high end video card.

Surprisingly, it even slows down in full screen mode on my quad core i7.

I was exploring the large caverns deep beneath my home today, when I heard zombies through the wall. It took a lot of digging to find them, and then there were only two inside a small boring pocket. Found a dozen or so iron while I was working my way to them, though. So, not that bad.

Here's an aerial view of my ongoing tower project. I'm building a rooftop garden, but I don't want to show too much before I finish:

Some of what's there isn't permanent, there's a ring of scaffolding that's up to allow me to place torches on the underside of the top platform.

When I'm done there will be a little something of everything in my garden. Trees, reeds, cactus, flowers, flowing water and more. It's already quite peaceful up there.

Work on the mansion is slow. I got the structure built.. but even in daylight it is FULL of skeles and creepers. Even if I kite around and kill skeles, creepers keep making big dents in it.. forcing me to rebuild over and over. I've opened up some skylights for sunshine to help kill skeles/zombies. Hope to get a ass load of torches inside it.

Figured out what to do with the sky bridge ceiling and the hut.

View now, looking down the tunnel.

I ran into a frickin' crazy cavern today.

It had non-stop enemies. When I first discovered this, I had to take out 3 zombies, 4 skeletons, 2 spiders, and 3 creepers all at once.

The rest of the several hours of spelunking was pretty much the same, but me putting up constant walls to protect myself. I mean holy SHIT there were just non-stop creatures. I actually had to check to see if I had somehow put in on hard mode. Even though hard mode would have been easier than this.

I kept scouring for what was causing all this-- like 4 dungeons side by side or something, but nothing like that. I DID however find 3 different dungeons, but all very scattered, and with no possible access to the rest of the caverns.

I also noticed that creatures kept falling from above, so I theorized that they were spawning somewhere way up high, falling down here to get me, and then since they had "left" their area, it would respawn them, creating more and more mobs.

There was one spot where I could see several creatures of different types hopping around a gap, so I broke open the blocking piece (from a raised distance) and a FLOOD of zombies, creepers, skellies, and spiders. Easily 15 of them.

It was just non-stop though. I opened up into one area and literally say like 15-20 creatures crawling around it at once. Always coming, trying to get me, shoot me, etc. The skeletons were the worst.

I've done a lot of cavern crawling and no other cavern has been anything like this. I eventually used up half my diamond sword and about 150 arrows, along with 128 torches, and decided it was too much. So I finally put it on peaceful just so I could have a chance of making it out alive. I couldn't find my way out, so I decided to dig straight up and see where I ended up.

Where I started: An island not too far from my base
Where I went: wayyyyyyyyyyyy out west, then into the cavern
Where I surfaced: Right outside my main base

Awesome.

Here are some pics of the insanity-- I had to up the brightness so you could see. Another is a huddle of shit. Imagine that, non-stop (like, kill 3 creatures and 3 more are on the way).

This pic doesn't do the hoarde of enemies justice. You can look and see like 7 things here, but only because the other 15 crawled behind a wall.

Huge huddle.

I'm glad there aren't many monsters in the caves I've been exploring.

I heard water through the wall, so I started digging. I eventually found some water, though it wasn't what I'd heard. I found a new cave system and it wound down until it got to a huge pool of lava with two sources of water over it, so it's almost covered by a huge sheet of obsidian. At that point I'd been playing too long, so I headed back to my base. (Having mined a fair amount of coal, iron, redstone and a little gold).

I thought for sure I'd explored some huge distance from my base, and I would have if it had been in a straight line. Checking in Cartograph for where I'd placed torches, I was still right underneath the hill my fortress is on.

So i tried playing this on my pc. but i got this error

EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x6954ac8e, pid=2496, tid=5676

i tried the minecraft forums, reinstalled java then uninstalled ,registry clean and installed java again.
my drivers are uptodate.
using win 7 32bit.
anyone got any idea how to fix this?

I don't remember if it's the same thing, but when I first downloaded Minecraft, it wouldn't run. On the same page there was a link to another executable if the first linked file didn't work, and when I downloaded that second one, Minecraft worked fine.

Okay, image dump of what I've been up to: my sky house. I saw this formation with the natural waterfall, and instantly knew what I wanted to do with it. I've also carved out rooms inside the mountain, but most of it isn't very interesting.

I was inspired by one of GasBandit's previous posts to try and decorate a little, with mixed results. When I originally started building, I didn't put much thought into usable floor space, so things are a bit awkward. First, the top level, which I made my bedroom.

Second level is the dining room and kitchen.

Third is the entertainment level, with a barbecue pit and diving board.

The diving board goes straight into a pool I made which connects to the waterfall.

A ground level view of the pool.

One of my favorite things; a secret room behind the lavafall.

Oh yeah, and the one interesting thing I carved out of the mountain; the greenhouse. The night time picture isn't all that impressive, but it lets you see the flaming beacon I put at the top.

I want to play Minecraft so bad! I bought Civilization 5 and was pretty disappointed. :( Gonna go back to win xp to see if it works on thet platform.

Pretty much all my free time has been spent on Minecraft. When I said I hated you all for showing me this game, I was only half-joking ;)

So i got this game to run finally after changing to Omega Drivers and, damn.suddenly its 4 in the morning. -.-

i dug a mine down to find a huge ass cavern full of lava. (i learned the hard way not to dig up the block yoou are standing on)
any tips on finding iron?

Iron is most easily found in natural caves fairly deep underground (but not necessarily down at the bedrock layer)

There's a variety of ways to find natural caves:

My least favorite way: Dig a diagonal shaft (stairs going down) until you either hit cave or hear monsters. When you hear monsters, dig toward them.

My "if it's available" way: Find open caves on the surface , follow them down into the earth.

My "this shouldn't work but it's given me my best mines" way: Put everything in a chest in your house. Take some stone picks, some stone shovels, some logs, 64 ladders and 64 torches. Pick a random point and dig straight down. If you don't hit anything until you hit bedrock, just jump-fill your way back up and pick a new spot. If you hit lava, reoutfit yourself the same and try again a few meters from your first try. If you hit open cave, immediately go back up the shaft alternating ladder/torch/ladder/torch/ladder/torch on each wall tile up the shaft.

Once you've found a natural cavern, explore it completely. Any gravel you come across (or dirt, below sea level) clear out entirely with your shovel as about half the time it obscures another branch of the cavern. You'll be swimming in iron before you know it.

Oh, and the castle? It's REALLY coming together now... Floors 1 and 2 are done, floor 3 is half done and still got floors 5 and 6 to go, but it's already looking awesome. Maybe I'll have pictures for monday. Or... I dunno, it's been such work and I am so proud of it I'm considering temporarily throwing up a publically accessible server just to let you guys look through it with your own eyes. The main feasting hall is awesome, with gold block chandeliers and giant fireplaces, a round table and a few long tables... all the guest quarters are done and the little woman decorated them by theme... the sand room, the clay room, the ducal suite, etc. Just finished work on the throne room last night. She says my flaming obsidian throne is "gaudy." But I'm not sure I'm willing to take gaudiness critique from someone who built THEIR throne entirely out of redstone ore blocks so it looks like every inch of it is ruby encrusted.

Still have the Grand Royal Suite to finish, and haven't even started the garden courtyards yet... or the outer wall. The mine we dug for the materials for all this is now a huge sprawling cavern complex that I built a small mausoleum over the entrance. After all, in these castles, the mausoleum always has catacombs under it, right?

We also plan to build a small village outside the gates. Man. I just realized that no matter how far we've come, we still have a long way to go to finish this.

I had a rather odd experience. I finally managed to get Minecraft to run on my netbook (it had been crashing) and when it was obvious it wasn't going to run well enough to want to play it, I decided to just goof around instead. I gathered up a lot of wood, and just started digging straight down. Nothing much interesting happened, until I hit adminium....

Down there I found this:

A hole in the bottom of the world. Step down into that hole, and there's no coming back. Stumbling around in the dark, the first time, I fell through that hole and had no idea what happened. It took a while to get back down safely, but I think that screenshot is worth it.
