Krisken's art stuff, previously all 40k miniatures

Looks like an ok group of stuff for Chaos. The thing about Chaos Space Marines is they are getting revamped sometime in the next 6 months as they are being released with the new edition of Warhammer 40k. For the time, though, you may find yourself a little frustrated with the army as the current codex is definitely showing its age (says the guy building onto his Eldar army). I've never seen anyone use the Raptor squads (I think that's what the jump pack group is called), but with the new FAQ up at the GW site your Dreadnought should do alright (put it in front of your units so it can't frenzy fire on them if it comes up).

The popular way to run Termies in Chaos right now is as a 3 man melta squad dropping close to the enemy to destroy a tank.

Sounds cool. The CSM was simply because I eyeballed the value at over $350 to buy the boxed sets, mostly before shipping, off of eBay. Then I'd have to put them together, which I'm thinking is going to be frustrating for me.

Sorry to keep running back and asking questions. My friends are still relatively new (I think they've been playing a year or so). I've been trying to read dakkadakka and 3++ is the new black at work, but a lot of it doesn't make too much sense to me because of how new i am.

I just read some entries on 3plusplus.net and you weren't kidding. Apparently, the Raptor Squad is better than the bikes, at least according to that site. I'll be interested to see what changes are made in the revamp.

I just bought a Chaos Rhino, an Obliterator, three Chaos Bikes, and a Space Marine Razorback from a guy on eBay for $84 before shipping, which is about what the units would cost off of either eBay or Amazon, come assembled, and most are painted. It's not GREAT, but I needed transports. I'd like to get a hold of two more Obliterators, but they are few and far between on eBay.

I wish I were as talented at putting units together from scratch...the stuff you've made looks awesome.

I'll throw out a question. I'm really starting a Grey Knights army, but their codex doesn't say anything about an HQ - say a Grand Master - being able to take a retinue, but I've seen some lists on the 40K forums that do include them. I'm just a tad confused on whether or not the HQs are able to take retinues, and what their limits are. I'm also considering a Techmarine - that conversion beam blaster - strength 10 AP 1 at long range and cheaper than most tanks? Yes, please.

What I would bet they are doing is putting the HQ choice in a squad as they are Independent Characters, which means they can enter and leave troop squads. There are obviously benefits and setbacks to each of these, so you'll want to make sure the characters you use are able to join squads if that is what you want to do.

Keep in mind that the blast has a chance to scatter (all blast templates roll a d6 plus scatter die instead of using the ballistic skill). Still, yeah that is crazy strong at that range and points cost!

Thanks, Krisken. Something to consider. I also noticed that the Techie can get an orbital strike for a few points more and servo-pack. I gotta plan out that build now, and I'm on the fence.

If you have a friendly atmosphere of players, see if they would be willing to let you proxy a few models you are unsure of for a while. Nothing worse than buying a ton of models and finding out half of them really don't perform as well as you would like them to.

Sweet. I might just do that, especially to have access to other vehicles similar to the Rhino that are pretty expensive online.

Yeah they are. They're nicely put together, but with a month of free time it's really not hard to put together 3 of these for under $15 (that includes the magnets).

Out of curiosity, when you paint, do you use any kind of magnification? I'm guessing that having something like that might make it easier to get the little detail better. I received a Ghost Ark and there's a lot of little detail in there. I'm looking forward to uglying it up, but was curious what you did.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if I magnetize the general parts, paint, then assemble? If so, mostly I assemble the piece and then paint it. Most of the time, anyways. There have been a couple minis (Harlequins in particular) where assembling them would have made painting checker patterns on the cloak behind the legs impossible. In that case I just painted the pieces separately and then carefully glued them together.

Oooohhh!! (I'm kinda dumb!)

No, I never use a magnifying glass. I have one at the house but any time I tried to use it my mind went wonky going from tiny brush to huge brush under the glass. What I am considering, however, is using one of those goofy head gear things like Sigourney Weaver uses in Ghostbusters 2. Then the brush won't change sizes on me!

Tomorrow on the blog I'll have a squad of 5 Wraithguard finished and the two scratch made weapon platforms as well, all painted up. I've been awful busy!

Three years is pretty impressive. We are moving soon, so I'm not going to dip into painting until we do. Hopefully, my paintjobs will be 10% of what yours are :D

Thanks Ash! Already tonight I've highlighted the reds a lot and am now working on the masks. This is a LOT of work!

Thanks OC! I don't normally spend this much time on mass troops like this.

I'm hoping over the next two weeks I can cover the painting process of the Spiritseer I'm currently working on (which I'm hoping to have a fantastic phoenix grace the back of the robe). This might be a little overly ambitious of me, so we'll see how it works out.

I like the stompiness of that one, however I think it'd be even cooler if you painted that marine in your Emperor's Pride colors.

Hah, that would be neat, but gosh darn it I don't know if I can bring myself to do it! I started painting him blue because I was originally going to give him to a friend who plays Ultramarines (of course!). Seemed only natural to put him under the stomping foot of a Wraithlord.

We'll see. I can still remove him from under foot (it's not glued into place) and perhaps I'll have multiple options to use as I see fit.

Dude, seriously... your eye for subtle shading is sublime! I am in AWE over here... I might just pull out some of my Iron Warriors who have been languishing in the bottom of my closet and work up some more troops for them...

::Blushes:: Awww, I'm really not that good at it! There is a lot I need to work on yet and I hope I can tackle those issues with the Eldar army.

It would be super cool to see an Iron Warriors army though (HINT HINT!). Someone should post those ::cough!::.
