Coronavirus Thread

Tangentially related.

I had to go to Emerg this morning to get my knee/leg checked out because it hurts like hell, is swollen and hot and I think/thought I have/had a blood clot. Thus, needs seeing to.

I have never seen that Emergency department so quiet. It's always a complete zoo. But this morning there was no one in the waiting room, no wait for triage, maybe a 5 minute wait for registration (I think the nurse was on her break), and no wait at all to see a primary care nurse. Bit a wait on the doc, and I go back for an ultrasound in an hour and a half (so I went home and will return for that appointment).

I asked the primary care nurse how they were doing, and he said they're doing really well, and that people are staying home.
This encourages me greatly.

Also, I overheard the triage nurse talking to a coworker saying "It's amazing how all those stomach pains just went away."

His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales has tested positive for the coronavirus.
The police have been stopping people who have been trying to flee the coronavirus by travelling to the north of Scotland. Plenty of people have been stopped in the road in their campervan & told "Turn around. Go back where you came from."

Charles had been showing symptoms over the weekend. He came up to Aberdeenshire on Sunday. As soon as he started showing symptoms he should not have moved from where he was. Instead he heads to an area of the country with one of the lowest numbers of infection! FFS!

Talked to mom again this morning. She's doing okay. Roommate still not back from hospital.

This "stimulus" package they're talking about with everyone getting a check. What happens if, say, your tax refund would normally get offset for old student loan debt? Would those people get anything?

I don't know your situation, but I know we're in a few month period of "no student loan payments or interest accrual."

I'm probably still paying mine since it's wage garnishment. But it is what it is. Kerri lost her gig and get her last paycheck yesterday. But Zach STARTED a job yesterday so in two weeks he'll be the one buying food.

I was put in default while I was in the middle of boot camp. And later, when I tried to call about that, I was told any appeal had to be made in person... in Chicago. At that point I decided "fuck it," and have ignored them ever since. It's been 25+ years.

My brother-in-law, who just got tested for Covid-19 and came back negative, said that the CDC is saying that we'll all catch it eventually and that he'd rather get it and get it over with.

For one, I'm pretty sure the CDC hasn't said that.

Two, the whole point of what we're doing is to AVOID everyone catching it. This isn't like chickenpox. It's not a "catch it, be cured, and never get it again." This thing is spreading like wildfire and killing literally thousands of people.

Everything we're doing might seem extreme, but that's the POINT. We're doing this to avoid it being worse like it has been in Italy and looking like it will be in the U.S.

No one should WANT to get this. I mean...sweet leaping Jesus, brother-in-law.

I'm not going to further argue with him on this because he is not the kind of person worth arguing with. He's very Conservative party leaning, always bad mouthing Trudeau and AOC. Though he hates Trump, at least. But we got into it once about teacher strikes...

...and he went on a spiel about them being lazy, just wanting more money, lucky they have summers off, the usual anti-teacher rhetoric from someone that has no idea what it's like to be a teacher.

So yeah, just not worth getting into it with him on this. I just told him I'm glad the test came back as negative and thanked him for letting us know.

My company's COO: "10% of our business is networking, so we classify as an essential service, and we can keep doing our AV installs! Let's get on site and get to work"

My company's clients: "Pool's closed due to aids."

Basically, despite our executives performing all kinds of legal/mental gymnastics to keep our installers in the field, I've had 3 of my projects now flat out refuse us access to the site because they were locked down.

So here I sit at home, watching training videos because I have no coding to do.

Student loans are one of the few things enshrined in bankruptcy law that cannot be discharged. They will follow you forever until one or the other of you dies.

And forget retiring. If you owe student loans you are exempt from collecting social security.

Okay so not exempt per se. Just that your SS checks are garnished and pay off the loan. You don't get SS money until the loan is fully paid off. Same thing in most cases. It's a law that passed in 1996.

You might to share that article I posted about someone who has it. Not really something anyone should want to get even once. And I read that there are some overseas studies says you CAN get it again, so it's not like chicken pox. (This is aimed at your BIL, not you, obviously.)

They need to quarantine, too. But there should be video conferencing capabilities so they can work from home, just like the rest of us.

I just saw a guy soap up his hands at the bathroom sink, then leave without rinsing it off.

I guess he wanted to keep the soap on his hands longer, to make sure all the germs are killed off.
Yeah, no.

The soap isn't killing them, you're supposed to wash so the virus gets washed off, and doesn't have the concentration to actually infect you or others.

I swear i even saw a video posted here that made that pretty clear.

To kill it you need alcohol or some chlorine stuff.

If you see anyone else do that, please tell them they're supposed to wash it off...

Sadly, those with weakened or no immune system can get chicken pox more than once :(

There is support for temporary remote voting, but one senator in particular is opposed to it. I'll let you guess who.

...which is the normal, rational answer. But with the misinformation, stock selling, and general fuck-ups that got us here, I'm feel less charitable towards these guys.

You'd be surprised at the amount of people in the medical field i hear that from.

But they don't actually mean everyone everyone, just a lot of people, like the regular flu, because it's now escaped in the general population and the lack of/mild symptoms means they won't be able to do anything about it.

Or even ones WITH good immune systems. Mr. Z has gotten shingles twice.
Aren't shingles a recurrence of chicken pox, but not as bad because your immune system already knows the virus?

Of course, people that are in danger would be screwed if you infected them even if the 2nd time around you personally don't feel sick, so...
