Looks like the xbox one will be $499 and available in November.

Also there's a new xbox 360.

I haven't paid attention to the games they announced. I watched a bit of the live feed, but I didn't care enough to keep track of it.

Sony's pre-event press conference isn't for a few hours still.

#11

Good lord. Well, I guess all those folks predicting the cost of the system was going to be between $400 and $500 were technically right.

$499's not bad for a new console, really. There are phones out there that cost more.

At the 0:33 mark, "Just let it happen. It'll be over soon." Yes friends, a rape-like comment in the trash talk. The exact kind of phrase that women have heard while being raped.

And I made the mistake of pointing out exactly that. Now all the broboys are coming out to defend it by saying things like, "We say stuff like 'I just raped you, faggot' all the time!" That's not helping your argument, guys.

#15

Frank

If Sony announces at 399, the battle's already won. My guess is they're probably 500 too.

Killer Instinct looks like crap. Killer Instinct has always been shit. That scripted trash talk is fucking awful. You know why Apple pressers are usually so impressive? They always come across as someone just talking. These ultra-scripted fakeathons are painful to watch.

Unless sony completely drops the bag with thier stuff I will firmly stay in their camp. Their exclusives are the reason I still own a console at all. Got rid of the 360 two years back and haven't seen anything come out exclusively for it that I kick myself for not having one. Everything else I can get on pc, or on rare occasions, when a nintendo game inexplicably calls me back to it.

Really, it was a toned-down version of what we've come to expect from people on Xbox Live. Microsoft is just being honest about the player base you'd be getting into.

Considering the lack of news in this thread, my guess is that jack and shit has happened today? Here's hoping Nintendo's video series tomorrow is better.

Saw Dead Rising 3. Xbox One exclusive, looks like they are going the Resident Evil route of making everything brown and super serious (when the humor was the entire charm of Dead Rising).

Seriously Capcom? I've had money set aside for a long time, but now I know I can spend it on something else. I'll just watch the game on Twitch or Youtube if your going to support Microsoft. I thought you learned your lesson when DR2 was multiplatform.

Perhaps they wanted to address the issue that occured when Dead Rising went on the wii/gamecube (whichever it was). There would be like one zombie on the screen at the time. I'm sure the Xbox, despite all it's other programed issues, will probably have some impressive graphics that will give Dead Rising the epic scale it needs.

The PS3 handled Dead Rising 2 perfectly fine though and so did PC. Apparently what happened is Microsoft let them go multiplatform with it by making them give Xbox exclusive DLC (Case Zero and Case West). So they aren't doing it this time because apparently it's cheaper.

They're turning versus XIII into XV? I guess that makes sense considering how much time they've dropped into it with nothing to show for years. And it sounded like it was going to be a better game than any of the proper FFXIII games.

I don't know; aside from Kingdom Hearts III (I swear if it's not the conclusion, if they tack on another bullshit to be continued ending--I'm out) or a real Final Fantasy Tactics game (not this mobile app crap), I'm kind of done with Squenix.

Playstation plus is kinda awesome though in comparison. I've had it for awhile now. Lots of "free" retail games. There wws a promotion awhile back to buy a year discounted and get anouther three months free. As it stands I dont have to resub until august 2014 and it was I think $40. It sucks we've been shoehorned into it to be sure. Have they said it will be required to play multiplayer yet?

With FF XV (which I hope we finally see), Kingdom Hearts 3, huge support for indie developers, Grand Theft Auto V, and a huge double deuce to Microsoft, Sony has officially won this generation.

It does kinda suck that you'll have to pay to play online, but the fact that they're adding it in with their PS Plus, I have no problem with that. I doubt many will complain with all the free games and discounts they'll be getting.

The part that shocks me is how small it is compared to the One. It's got comparable architecture inside, they use a lot of the same components. Why is the One such a monstrosity? Hopefully it's more compact size won't make for heat issues.

Yup. And if you already have Plus, it carries over. So any PS1 games you got for free, they'll work. I assume that's not the same for the ones I bought on PSN, like anything from Telltale or Double Fine or other games like Limbo won't carry over. That's still one of the things holding me back from getting a PS4.

Regarding this issue. I've seen this multiple times about all the new consoles. Quite frankly, I have no idea how people thought that their games would port over to the next generation console at all. Unlike PCs, which have a common coding architecture, each console has it's own coding language that it works in, and that developers (Note, that's DEVELOPERS) would have to completely re-code a game to work on a new system. There should be no expectations for a developer to go back and re-code a game for backwards compatibility when it means zero profit for them.

Also, regarding backwards compatibility in general. Why do people suddenly expect this after one generation of consoles had it? I don't seem to recall bitching about my SNES being unable to play NES games.

I guess it's just that they're digital copies that I can't carry over. At least with Steam, I can carry those over from PC to PC. I'm not even remotely an expert on computer mechanics or hardware or how it works, so I honestly don't understand how or why there's something hampering them being ported from PS3 to PS4.

But it really comes down to the digital rights issue. I bought those games. But now the only way I can play them is on my PS3. And honestly, I had planned on trading my PS3 to afford to get a PS4 because I have limited funds when it comes to this sort of thing. The fact that I won't be able to do anything with those digital games is the sort of thing that I've been worried about when it comes to digital rights.

Basically this. The only way we're gonna see PS3 ports is as remakes later on down the line, mainly because of how hard it is to program for and because of the chips architecture. They would literally need to stick the chip in the PS4 to do it right now and that would add an easy $100 to the price.

But a lot of those indie games were also ported to the PC. In fact, the vast majority have been. Could it not be possible, then, to port them from PC to PS4?
That's probably how it's going to happen. You might see a bunch of PC to PS4 (and 360 to PS4 ports because the 360 version is basically a PC version specced for the 360).

The underlying physical hardware may be much the same, but the OS and APIs between the game and the hardware are going to be so different that it isn't just a matter of recompiling it, it's just as much a porting effort for go from windowsX86 to PS4X86 as it was to go from cell to x86. You really have to rewrite the game engine to fit the different APIs.

Think of everything as layers. You have the game on top, the OS with it's API's in the middle, and the hardware on the bottom. Change any of the three layers, and you have to port the game, it's not just a recompile and tweak.

Maybe I'm confusing something here, but how is this a digital rights issue? You bought a PS3 game for us on the PS3. You say the only way you can play them is on your PS3 and I see nothing wrong with being forced to play a game on the system it was designed for. It is nice and certainly a good move for system developers to include backwards compatibility, but I don't see it as a rights issue.

My PS2 is still hooked up for just that reason.

See, the only reason that the first disk based systems were able to allow backwards compatibility is because the games from the PS1 and xbox could basically be emulated on a graphing calculator. The next generation, however, was a huge leap forward in graphics, and had to use new APIs and architectures. As I said previously, the ps1-ps2 era were really the first time that backwards compatibility even existed. It was a nice bonus, but only possible due to the downright archaic structure of the previous system and the new use of DVDs as a storage medium for games.

As for the digital rights issue, it was stated already, but it bears repeating. Those games were purchased for use on a specific console. Asking developers to go back and recode all those games is like asking a developer to go back and code Arkham City for Windows 98

I still don't like the split directional pad on PS controllers. It contributed to me selling my PS1 and skipping the PS2. Fortunately, my PS3 games make more use of the dual analog sticks (and using the split pad as another set of action buttons, if used at all), so hopefully for me that carries over into PS4 games.

Edit to add: I mean I hated using the split button directional pad to move my character. I always had trouble moving diagonally, having to hold down two buttons instead of using the inner corner of a plus sign (like on Nintendo controllers).

As I said previously, the ps1-ps2 era were really the first time that backwards compatibility even existed. It was a nice bonus, but only possible due to the downright archaic structure of the previous system and the new use of DVDs as a storage medium for games.
Actually, the Atari 3200 could play 2600 games too, so it's actually much older than you think.

In any case, what is going to happen is 10-15 years from now, someone is going to make something that can play these disk games all on one system, sort of like what is happening with these new NES/SNES/Genesis consoles that are coming out.

Also, here's another great .gif for the evening.

Mega Man is a perfect fit for the Smash Bros universe.

I actually kind of like that Nintendo's presentation is a direct video without bothering with all the financials (which of course aren't good this year), because it becomes all about the games and less about the unnecessary fluff of the typical press conference.

I just wish they hadn't underestimated the traffic on the feed, since it was nigh slide-show-esque.

Fuck that, putting him under the watchful eye of Nintendo means odds are he's going to be a fun character to play. Hell, every movement animation he had was ripped right out of the original series of games (jumping, sliding, etc). Capcom wouldn't have done that in any MM game they shit out at this point.

They almost did a dark and gritty Mega Man X reboot as a first person shooter. I'm not even shitting you. This was real and there is video to prove it.

A Mega Man FPS game isn't the worst idea I've ever heard (it worked for Metriod) but a dark and gritty reboot of an already dark series? It's like they don't understand that we want closure, not a new series.

The thing about the Prime series was that even though it had FPS elements to it, it was still at it's core a Metroid game. It was far more about traversal and power ups than combat.

Yeah they really need to stop calling those Final Fantasies and give them a new IP name. They're just using NPCs we know and tossing them into a very non FF style of world. It's so ridiculously off putting. Might as well call it Spirits Within and be done with it.

Then again, everytime they do this (Last Remnant) the game fails miserably.

I can deal with it not being a normal JRPG. 11, 12, and 14 were all nonstandard JRPGS. For me, this only needs to do three things.

- Be fun (because 13 sure as fuck wasn't)
- Be creative
- Give me a story with characters I actually care about (again, 13... I hated ALL of them.)

If it can give me those three things, I'll accept it as the new installment.

So I went and pre-ordered a PS4. Talking with the guy, they had about equal pre-orders for both the playstation and the xbox, which surprised both of us. He did say that they had been given a 6 console limit that was later raised to 8 for the xbox and none was given for the playstation. Only reason I can think of doing that is so everyone can start reporting that they are sold out. It might be that supply will be limited but who knows.

Wait, I don't get it... is 400 Days Season 2, or is it the extra episode for Season 1? They weren't clear about that.
Telltale has an FAQ up for the game
In short:
- $5
- Tells five short stories, each centering around a different survivor (not Lee or Clem)
- Meant to add a bit of connection between Season 1 and the upcoming Season 2
- Same type of gameplay
- Choices in S1 effect 400 days, both of which will effect S2
- Not a stand-alone title, requires S1 to purchase

I figured that was the case for a few reasons...

- One of the guys in the trailer looks exactly like one of the Cancer Survivor group from Savannah.

- Russell (guy with the backpack) looks like he's walking down the same road you stop at during Episode 3. Look at the bodies on the side of the road.

- Isn't that Kenny's truck that drives by Russell in the trailer?

In any case, I'll definitely be picking it up. Hoping for the inevitable TF2 item as well.

The Nintendo stuff has me exited. Yeah most of the good stuff isn't due out next year, but I have my system and I'm ready to go for when it does. In the meantime I still have a 360 and a PS3 to fill the gap between virtual console releases, Windwaker, Wonderful 101, and a few of the other releases this year to tide me over.

What do I think of the other consoles? Well I'm certainly not interested in an XboxOne at this time. The restrictions are just too insane for me to have any faith that it's going to be worth it. PS4 may be more worth it, but certainly not right out of the gate. I'll probably give the systems a year, which seems like a good amount of time for the prices to drop and there to be a pretty reasonable exclusive game gallery to select from.

Wait. There's a new game coming to the PS2?
While games like MADDEN are huge in the states, FIFA is huge all over the world because Soccer is just a much more worldwide sport. In many of the countries where people would be buying FIFA, it's much more rare to find a PS3 over the now much cheaper PS2. EA knows this, thus why they are making sure they have a PS2 variation to sell and bring in that cash.

You know, I find the outcomes of E3 and the seeming dominance of Sony and the PS4 quite interesting. If we look to the past, at the beginning of the current console generation, the roles were reversed. Sony's offering was a bloated, expensive mess, including a technology that significantly raised the price of the console over the others. A technology (in this case, Blu-Ray) that not many people had yet to adapt or even wanted, in a time when HDTV's still had a minor presence among households. The winner of that war had seemed to be Microsoft. I say Microsoft and not Nintendo, because Nintendo opted for a different stategy, they didn't fight in that war. While MS and Sony were grappling for dominance of a specific arena, Nintendo was content to go somewhere else, and the newness of it made it an early favorite and propelled the Wii to a vast number of sales, whereas hardly anyone wanted to buy a PS4.

The first console of that generation that I purchased was a Wii. And it was fun, tons of hours flailing around in the living room. Eventually I got a 360 for the more 'core' gaming, and when I finally got an HDTV, I picked up a ps3 for the blu-ray. Today, I haven't touched my Wii in years (insert pun here) and it's damn rare that I ever turn on my xbox. The ps3, on the other hand, gets tons of use, for gaming, for blu-ray, for streaming media from my pc and netflix and all the stuff that Sony claimed people would want but the world wasn't quite yet ready for. So how does that hold up against this year's E3?

Microsoft feels a little too late in their embracing of media. The PS3 did this, and it turned out to be a winning move for the console, but it was a different time. I don't need an xbone to watch tv on, I've got a billion different devices that can stream different media to any goddamn screen in my house. Their forced technology this generation isn't as game-changing as Blu-Ray was. No one really cares for the kinect, and there's no real benefit to embracing it as a technology for advanced media beyond gaming (and no reason to embrace it for gaming, either). Sony, meanwhile, learned from all of their mistakes. They came out swinging with a battle plan that had been forged from a generation of war. Sony is as much a faceless corporation as Microsoft is, yet they've come to the conclusion that making gamers happy is their best business model, and they used this to great effect to downright humiliate Microsoft. They were the seeming underdog last generation, and managed to rise to dominance. Will they keep it this generation? It'll be interesting to see.

This was my impression the second Gamestop didn't mount a PR campaign after the first press conference like Redbox did. I'm guessing Gamestop is going to be the ONLY US retailer that can let you sell Xbox One games, with GAME being the UK one. It's the only way it could happen without Microsoft having it's product tossed out of the store.

I wonder if this counts as a monopoly and will put Microsoft under federal investigation like it was in the late 90's/early 2000's regarding Internet Explorer.

Everyone is already throwing a shit fit over it. The company's intentions are clear. "We want more fucking money." But requiring registering your games to a specific account is not a new practice so I'm sure Microsoft has already gone over the legal requirements of such an endeavor. What does this mean for retail companies? Oh I'm sure they will have the ability to resell XboxOne titles, which will be probably completely dependent on if they have supplied Microsoft/The publisher with a fee. A fee that they are certainly going to pass on to the customers by jacking up prices. I think companies like Best Buy should instead focus on the other two consoles when it comes to used games.

It means they've got some explaining to do, but since they've suggested that its the same as the ps3, then chances are it means that digital games without media are tied to your account and can only be sold or traded if the publisher supports that, and that physical games with media can be traded and sold with impunity.

There still lies a grey area whee a physical game may come with a key or online component that gets tied to your account, which may mean the game cannot be fully traded or resold, but the publisher may provide just keys for a discount. This is not allowed on the first party titles, but third party publishers have more options.

So big titles with physical media will always be resell able. Digital titles will rarely be resell able. Some third party physical titles may have issues.

Yes, but they're also releasing a physical retail version in August. It's $30 instead of $20, comes in a green case, and does not require owning New Super Mario Bros. U to play. I guess that could count it as a stand-alone game as well.

Publishers have had the ability to enforce blocks on used games (one time use codes, attaching the game disc with the system it is first used on,etc) for ages now. EA has dabbled in this by making it so that certain games had to have a code to access online content. Now since Microsoft is enforcing new policies on used games some publishers may take it as a chance to enforce it on the PS3. But since they have had the ability to do this type of thing for awhile now I am hoping the publishers will avoid the temptation to start.

I wouldn't put it past Sony to change their mind later once they have a good chunk of the market share. They dropped backwards compatibility on the PS3 pretty quick, which was understandable so they could drop the price of the console, but also completely took away the ability for the PS3 to run other OS's through a firmware patch. Have they said if the capability to restrict used games is built into the PS4 and just not used?

I don't think they have, but I'm pretty sure it is in there.
