EA Needs to F*** off and die

EA is apparently offering everyone who isn't getting a refund for SimCity a free game from their catalog soon. This is a good PR move, for once. It's not enough but it's certainly a start.

Oh boy! I bet everyone can't wait to play an old copy of Spore! (you know that's likely what will happen)

Probably, but your apparently going to be able to pick from a list... and honestly, they really don't have any reason to skimp on which games you can get. It's all digital... it'd be worth giving away a free $40-60 game if it meant keeping the Sim City people on Origin and it's not lost money since it's digital.

I want the University Expansion for Sims 3 (don't judge me!)

If I had to pick a full game, I have no idea.

Can you save your game, go hog wild, try new things and then revert to an older save like every other Sim City ever made?

Maxis: SimCity offline mode is 'just not possible'

by Jessica Conditt on Mar 10th 2013 3:00PM

The issues barraging SimCity stem from its requirement that players are always online and connected to EA's servers, even if a player wants to experience the game alone. Making the game available offline could solve many players' issues, but that's "just not possible," developer Maxis General Manager Lucy Bradshaw said during a Twitter Q&A session.

"The game was designed for MP, we sim the entire region on the server so this is just not possible," Bradshaw said, in response to a question about offline modes. Previously Bradshaw responded to another question about an offline patch: "We have no intention of offlining SimCity any time soon but we'll look into that as part of our earning back your trust efforts."

Making SimCity offline would be a significant undertaking, if it were in the cards at all. Bradshaw further reiterated the sentiment of a leaked internal memo, noting that EA wasn't responsible for SimCity's issues; Maxis was.

"Hey, this is on Maxis," she wrote. "EA does not force design upon us. We own it, we are working 24/7 to fix it, and we are making progress."

Recent progress included increasing SimCity's server capacity by 120 percent, disabling "non-critical" game features, and a report that EA asked SimCity affiliates to stop actively promoting the game.

I seem to recall hearing that from Blizzard about SC2. Still hasn't happened.

"EA does not force design upon us."
Hmm, I seem to remember Bioware saying the same crap after their games started becoming shit after being bought out by EA. I think I can safely call "BULLSHIT" on that.

I'm pretty sure they've got some sort of gag order about interference from EA when they're absorbed into the giant blob of bland that is EA.

You still have to log onto your account when you boot up, so no, you don't have to be always on. They held that off till D3.

I know two guys who quit Bioware Edmonton during the making of ME3. They wouldn't talk about the game (those fucking pricks) but they did say that EA is a harsh corporate overlord.

I'm guessing they signed an agreement that said "EA hereby has the rights to all of your internal and external organs if you say a single peep about ME3."

That is such a bold faced lie, their pants must be so on fire that Nasa is investigating on how to turn EA executives into a new kind of energy source.

Why don't they just enable "local host" mode or something, have a once-per-24hr authorization handshake, and simply prevent people from bringing their local host city/region online to prevent hacks?

That way, I can play with friends on my online city, but I also have a local city to mess with. It's not like I would be asking for them to re-write actua game code.

Who even cares about hacks to cities? It's a fucking simulation game, it's not like people will be using their uber-blinged out, hacked city to kill other players' cities. For cryin' out loud, EA needs to realize that there's more than one gaming model.

Can't you actually do that in-game? i.e. make an awesome enough city that other players people move there and abandon their own?

I have no idea. I quit playing SimCity with SC2k. I know there are social aspects of this game, which is the excuse that Maxis is using to justify never letting anyone play offline ever, and I know there's a bit of buzz about having shitty neighbors whose cities bring down the value of your city, but I don't know how bad it can actually get.
