Multiverse allows me to set different worlds to spawn monsters/animals or not. It's SUPPOSED to also let me set different worlds to survival/creative, but I'm having difficulty getting creativeland to be... creative.

so anyway, there ARE animals/monsters on Caprica, Hellworld, and skyworld. There are NOT on Ragnar (and won't be on creativeland).

I've added a mod that lets you play midi music on noteblocks. for a demonstration, see the area just east of my and Chikii's houses.

to get a list of currently installed midi files, type /midi list

to set it up, set up a row of 16 note blocks, put a cobblestone at one end, then a sign on the side of the cobblestone on the opposite side from the noteblocks that says

(blank line)
[MIDI]
filename without the .mid here
(blank line)

Right click the sign to play/pause, left click to stop.

If you have a midi you want added to the collection, send it to me (or a link to it) and I'll FTP it up to the server. Bear in mind:
  • the noteblocks only have about an octave and a half in range. notes above or below its range will be disregarded
  • lag is a factor. extremely fast songs will suffer worst
  • the volume for all instruments and channels is MAX. so background arpeggiation is just as loud as the melody
  • the simpler the midi the better. if it sounds orchestral it probably will sound awful in noteblocks. if it sounds like a novice playing the piano with only one hand, it will sound best on noteblocks.
  • each noteblock is a midi channel. to change instruments on a channel basis, change what's under the noteblocks (dirt = piano, wood = bass guitar, stone = bass drum, sand = snare drum). Channel 10 is usually the "drum channel" most midis use for all their drums, unfortunately noteblocks will play all drums and snares in that channel as only one kind of drum, so I find it usually sounds better just to remove the 10th noteblock altogether. The bass channel is usually channel 3 or 4 or so, I've found.
  • you can turn the midi on/off with redstone running to the sign, but it causes redstone to get glitchy/buggy graphic-wise within 5-10 meters of the sign. it still functions, it just LOOKS like it shouldn't. Also, it won't graphically update breaking any redstone in that radius until you relog.

To whoever built the fall grinder in the desert: building it right next to mine probably wasn't a great idea. Two grinders in the same general vicinity will only serve to reduce the output of both.

Also, I put a cactus down in the collection area. If you're away, you don't want drops to accumulate and possibly lag the server. You might want to set up a water flow system or something.

A bit late, but for a levelling system, I would propose mcMMO over this xLevel thing.

http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/mcmmo/

It doesn't give you classes, but rather a bunch of skills including mining, combat skills and repairing that you level up as you do them, giving you bonuses inherent to each skill such as a chance of flame-arrows for archery, a chance of doubledrop for mining, as well as ''super abilities'' that basically make you do the thing of the skill at a very high rate. It also includes a party system.

So I spent a good 4 hours last night mining, got my first haul of diamond, which was a relief, and then whammo server reset. Log back in and I had lost it all (server had rolled back my inventory).

So two questions:

1) Would anyone be willing to loan be 6 diamond for 2 diamond pickaxes

2) How should I avoid this in the future? Does logging out save it?

I can spare you some diamond tools. Can you give me a time for when the crash happened so I can find it in the server log and figure out what caused the crash?

mcMMO is also in the Multiplay repertoire, so if that's the way that is decided to go it shouldn't be more of a technical hurdle than xLevel.

hm. Not sure exactly. Probably around 11:00 PM Texas Time (I don't believe in other time zones).

Edit: And yeah I would appreciate a loan of a couple diamond picks. Not sure what bothers me more though, loosing those picks or the 500 or so smoothed stone I had made.

Found it in the log. Looks like we had a CPU usage spike, and the server did an instant self-defense restart.

And yes, to answer the question you asked right after coming back from the restart, I can generate items to replace what you lost.

I'd rather not have the MMO/leveling stuff on. We know that the built-in exp bar will be used for something, probably sooner rather than later, and so "closer to vanilla" is my preference for that.

Other thoughts?

I agree. When later released get...released, who knows what they will have. We know that exp is planned. If we have levels and then Notch adds them, I sincerely doubt they'd be compatible.

Speaking of which:

Looks like they might be buffs as opposed to XP levels, though. Prolly not going to make it into 1.9

Also, looks like Ender pearls will be used for short-distance teleports.

I had a thought - since the point of these latest patches is "adventure," I could create an "adventureland" type map that is routinely wiped and regenerated with a different seed every 3 or 7 days or so. No building, but it would make for a constant supply of fresh content and help prevent resource depletion on Caprica, which would help prevent it from having to bloat to Ragnar-ian proportions just to find more resources. It would not be very much work at all - basically a few lines manually entered in game whenever it was time to wipe the adventure map. (Multiverse lets me link, unlink, create and delete maps from in-game).

What would you all say to that idea?

Dave

So the Adventureland would be nothing more than a place to go to fight monsters?

I'd say that it should have a centralized Safehouse that didn't wipe.

I like that!

I think, however, that adventureland should be harsher than caprica in some way. There's cheese there, but you have to work for it a little harder than on caprica or ragnar. I don't know what we might do to make it harder, but minecraft isn't really terribly challenging...

That's make it infinitely more of a pain in the ass to maintain. Besides, evac is always just a /warp away. If you want a safehouse, how long does it take you to build a simple cobblestone structure? An hour at most, if you already have the materials? (which you would in this case, since you can simply bring whatever you want with you from caprica/ragnar).

I also currently have no way to make it constantly night on a map.

The point, in my mind, is that it'd be a ready source of pristine resources and new abandoned mineshafts/strongholds without having to bloat the size of the main caprica map.

So we go there, mine our minds off and then go back to Caprica with our ill-gotten booty? I could get behind that. Unlimited resources, but we'd still have to find them.

What happens if our characters are deep in a mine in Adventureland when it resets?

I think it's a manual thing Gas would have to do, and thus could ask everybody on if they're there.

And I like your "Unlimited resources, but we'd still have to find them" line. It's a good idea.

I believe it would respawn you in Caprica, inventory intact. But to be on the safe side, I would recommend never staying there. And eriol is right. Since it's something I would do manually, I could even publish a schedule beforehand so people would know when to make sure they were not there when the Langoliers come.

I'm so interested in getting in on this but honestly feel overwhelmed by the size and updates of this thread.

What's brand-spanking new player to Minecraft Multi-Player got to know to join?

Nothin. Buy a copy, try it out a little in single player to learn the basics, then come on in.

in multiplayer hit T to open the chat window to talk.

the chat window also lets you enter commands, like
/mc
gives you a magic carpet to walk through the sky

/warp (warpname)
warps you to a predetermined point set and named by a player. list of warps is /warp list . other commands, such as setting your own warps, at /warp help

that's about all you need to know to get started.

Oh, and don't break people's shit if you can help it.

I played alot of single player and still have my copy.
How does one join multiplayer?
Magic carpet? Isn't that a bit "broken" for creating/fighting monsters? Same for warping?

What's with all the different world names listed in this thread? What's the differences of each?

If you're curious about our multiple worlds, you start off in Caprica. This is the "main" world for now. Find somewhere undeveloped to establish yourself. Near the Caprica spawn point is an area with several portals. These portals take you to other worlds: Ragnar, Hellworld and Skyworld.

Ragnar is our old map, that contains many old grand works we can't bear to part with, but is out of date content wise (no villages, old mines, strongholds etc) and doesn't get backed up regularly, so building new things there isn't recommended. It's gate is grey stone.

Hellworld is self explanatory. Due to difficulty with our multiworld setup, the nether doesn't work as it normally would.. but in order to still have access to nether content (and resources), there is a nether world map that is accessed through the red gate. Besides Caprica, Hellworld is the only world with monsters and animals.

Skyworld is a world that is above the clouds with floating islands of various sizes. It's beauty belies its danger, however - falling to your death is very likely. It is accessed through the white (snowblock) gate.

Magic carpet and warps don't hamper monsters.. They're mostly for fast travel to distant lands (and boy do we have some distant, distant lands, especially on Ragnar), and for easy scaffolding during building tall things.

Oh, and the server address is 66.135.42.50: 27065 and I'll need to know your username to add you to the whitelist.

It also makes lumberjacking a breeze.

btw thanks for the diamonds.

Is Skyworld based on the Aether mod?
No, it's based on Notch's experiments with making an anti-nether that PC Magazine guilted him into implementing in game.

You heard me: Sky world is canon. It's just there's no way to get there yet without a mod, which we have.
