[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

I talked to some people and I feel better. It's more feeling like I should be "done" with certain people. Like, "Oh, you're lying to my face and I know it? Shouldn't I say "fuck you"?" Or "You're flaking again? Cool." Or "Man, that's an awful lot of drama and dumb decisions I have nothing to do with, but you're going to bring me into it."

But I have this policy of striving very hard to be there for everyone. To be kind, comforting, caring, etc, for EVERYONE. I will hate no one, as long as they're like, not setting dogs on fire and shit. I strive to always make time for someone if they're having a hard time, or need help. It could be barely an acquaintance who's too drunk calling me at 3am asking for a ride. I will always make a strong effort to do it.

Typically I can tell it's very appreciated and people consider me a VERY kind and helpful, genuine person. But every now and then I feel like I'm being taken for a ride, and I have to decide if I want to become bitter and jaded and tell everyone to fuck off. Last night I very well almost did, to some people I care about a pretty good bit. But, in the end, I managed to resist, and I was able to force the mask back on.

It was actually a bit liberating. I learned that I can see someone for who they are yet still be the bigger person about it. Like, "Yeah, I know you're lying. I'm still going to be cheerful to you. You fuck."

Sick people need to start calling in sick. Buddy at work came in last week even though he was horridly sick and sat in my office a bunch and breathed his sick breath on me. He knows I have immune issues.

The tech who upgraded my husband's phone tonight was horridly ill and sneezed and snotted everywhere. He didn't have a clue about my health issues but common sense should have kept him home.

I have a congested head and a fever....too early to be the phone guy but if I lose my voice, I can thank work guy.

My neighbor (prob in his 60's or 70's) the one that has custody of his grandkids. Well, guess who was watching them today and taught them how to ride a bike? One is 8 ish and one is 11ish. I'm tired.

We are trying to buy a house, and we found a good one. But we lost the bid for the STUPIDEST reasons.

First, this house had sat on the market for six months, but somehow another family picked the exact same day we did to bid on the house. There was no event precipitating this either. No price drop or anything. Then, the buyers were "insulted" that we asked for a house cleaning in the contract. The house wasn't dirty, but come on. It sat for six months. And it's a common thing to ask for in the contract. We also refused to sign some addendum they had a lawyer draw up (but so did the other family). We accepted their counter offer to our bid, and they went with the other guys. Our agent shares an office with the other family's agent, so we know their bid was actually a good bit lower than ours. These idiots gave up thousands of dollars because they were offended we asked them to clean the house.

Maybe they were selling the house because they tried to kill a spider, but then lost it.

You can't risk ever going back in there.

Started chatting it up with this girl on OKCupid a few minutes ago. Talking about our weekend plans, like watching horror movies. She said, "Have a few puffs, a few drinks, watch horror movies."

Hold on. Puffs? Her profile said Smoking: Never, Drugs: Never. So I asked. She said she had marijuana occasionally.

And that was pretty much the end of the conversation.

How hard is this for people to get? If you do drugs, you put that in your profile. Pot is a drug. Therefore, you do drugs. It's not fucking rocking science.

Why would you expect people to admit in a public online profile that they break the law?
Or be entirely truthful, for that matter. I'm sure no girl has ever lied about her weight or real hair color, either :p

That said, 4-20-friendly doesn't necessarily mean they smoke pot themselves. I know quite a few who accept it in a partner or friends but don't do it themselves, and I also know some who really dislike it and would never date someone who does; indicating you don't do it yourself but are open to those who do is acceptable. Of course, that only applies to those words, not the others ;)

This. It can be very easy for your employer or anyone doing a background check to find an online dating profile, and admitting to drug use is at this point a red flag.

Being homosexual is completely legal too, but we know how THAT can turn out.

I don't mean just a matter of bias, I mean it's right there in the employee handbook - "Your employment is conditional upon not using any tobacco products, even in your personal time. Any employee found to be using tobacco at any time will be dismissed."

It's for health insurance reasons.

Oh wow! I've never seen that before! In my case, we have to be eligible to obtain and maintain a high level security clearance.

As far as health insurance goes, I lucked out! All pre-existing conditions are covered after one year of service.

Ah yes. That. I'd forgotten that tobacco products had become such a liability to employers because health insurance providers started thoughtfully passing along the increased costs.

Madness, complete madness. Will "your BMI must be below 30" and "you must sport at least once a week" be written in soon, too? I know I'm talking from a point of luxury, with state health insurance, but still. Smoking is comparatively better for your health insurance costs than eating McDonalds once a week, not exercising, or drinking a lot of alcohol. Not smoking during work, or not smelling of smoke, ok, but in your free time? That's literally be illegal in Belgium.

On the plus side, Dave's gonna regale us with lots of tales of that wild stand-up night, aren't you, Dave? Pleaaaaaaaaaaaase?
Yeah, I'll let you know once it's done. Next April. Hell, if I can get a good recording of it I'll post it![DOUBLEPOST=1446480953,1446480766][/DOUBLEPOST]So remember my mom went to assisted living and we got her dog? Well, I'm starting to HATE said dog. Barks constantly. Last night he shit on the floor. He eats and then pukes up the cat food.

I can't just get rid of him so I'm stuck.

Depends on the age of the dog, of course, and a bunch of other variables, but in general, those tend to be typically trainable traits. They're also (well, shitting and eating/puking) signs of stress and discomfort in dogs. It may take more time and money than you're willing to spend to make him/her feel better, though, or it may be impossible, if the dog's too focused on your mother.

Also keep in mind that, as a dog, (s)he's going to want to become part of your pack, until then will be less likely to follow your lead, especially if you respond with exclusionary or hostile behavior.

--Patrick

If the dog hasn't had a check up in a while it might be a good idea just to exclude something physical. The vet might also be able to give you some tips for reducing the dog's behavioral issues.

We are so fucking fucked right now. For the past 2 months we've been telling senior management on a daily basis that we're running out of work for the shop with no hopes of being able to fill that production time. This means that our 140+ person production staff will very shortly have no work. We can put them on workshare for a while, but the payout on workshare is bullshit and if we have to continue to cut real work hours, they will walk out, with every right to do so. The problems are very straight-forward, but that doesn't make them easy to solve.

  1. The job sites that we would be producing for aren't ready for their casework.
  2. We're short on drafters (and even shorter on experienced drafters), so most of the jobs we do have aren't drawn anyway.
  3. We have only one PM, so we're months behind on getting approvals on jobs.
  4. We aren't paying our vendors, so even if problems 1 through 3 didn't exist, we couldn't get material here anyway.
This week it has come to a head. We have two cabinet doors to send to the shop this week. That's it. Two doors. And all the while, our senior management has been going with the "hands over the ears singing la-la-la-la-la can't hear you" method of solving these issues. I honestly don't know how we're still open.

Oh, and then there's that really fun thing about how we haven't been funding employees' 401k and HSA accounts. We're taking the money out of their checks, but we're not funding their accounts.

This is illegal. If someone goes to the Department of Labor, people WILL do time. Do not be involved with this.

Held interviews all day, and I am still not 100% from my cold. Didn't sleep last night from pain related of my arthritis - got to pre-read an awesome chapter of a book though! - Get progressively worse all day and have lost my voice and have the start of a sinus infection. You know that gross feeling when it feels like your teeth are being pulled out by rusty pliers?

We are being audited at work starting tomorrow and I have been scheduled as the lead and required for every session except a few one on one chats. So three days of non stop being interviewed/questioned/interrogated/having to use my voice and fighting to save the jobs of my team even nasty chick.

I am there tonight hours after I should have gone home and I am the only one prepping and fighting and I've been warned that they think I have been running the office for a while at my current level and the promotion I have been working for likely won't happen. Yet, here I am alone fighting for the rest of them when I should be sleeping.

Why am I doing this?

Oh, believe me, I am not in any way, shape, or form responsible for anything that this company does in regards to people's pay. If I did have any responsibility for it, I would've quit when it was first discovered because I will not be a party to it. Now, granted, they're only three months behind funding those accounts, and a company this size can be up to one month behind, so they're only two months out of compliance, but it's still complete and utter bullshit. I don't care if it's legal, you just shouldn't fuck with people's livelihoods.

I don't know how tied you are to your job, but is reporting this yourself a possibility?
It would be very... impolitic... of me to report this - luckily several people who aren't as uniquely connected to the company as I am have already done so.
