Video Game News and Miscellany

For those that don't know, this is the first issue of Nintendo Power.

I remember getting the VHS tapes for DK Country and Killer Instinct way back when and feeling like I was some sort of royalty.
Man, even people that didn't subscribe to NP got that DKC video. I remember all my friends that were Nintendo kids got one like Nintendo had some sort of terrifying network of spies finding all the little SNES kiddies.

Man, there's a picture rife with memories. It was, to me, the last bastion of real game journalism, even if it was only for Nintendo systems. Always felt like it was written by people who legitimately cared about the content, as opposed to shills like IGN and the rest.
More on the games journalism thing and why I like Patrick Klepek. Here's two websites reporting on the THQ Humble Bundle.

First, Kotaku:

Second, Patrick Klepek on Giant Bomb:

Which one looks like it was written by a reporter and which one looks like it was written by a doofus blogger?

I kept all my old issues of Nintendo Power for one reason and one reason only: I learned to read explicitly for and because of this magazine... and it made me a god among boys. Most of them are still readable too.

Ugh, my Nintendo Powers are lost to the wind. The ones that weren't stolen from me, fucking asshole piece of shit kid I was assigned to do a group project with loaded himself up with a good amount of the contents of my room, including about 20 issues of Nintendo Power (not to mention a few transformers and my copy of Star Tropics for the NES) while I was in the bathroom. Didn't notice until he was gone. Of course he denied it later and his parents backed him up to mine but it did cause quite a few scraps between us throughout the years. I beat the shit out of that kid at the drop of a hat after that. I learned to fight beating the shit out of that kid. I didn't get to go on a single class trip in grades 5 or 6 because of how often I was suspended. Teachers thought I was a bully. I guess I was. To him.

That was a true Nintendo Power story.

Fuck this is dredging up so many school memories. Now I'm remembering how he changed the story of why we hated each other in school later on in junior high. Telling people it was because I had insulted his mom or some shit like that and not because I held a deep grudge of him stealing from me. Also, how he usually skewed the fight results in his favour. Which was total bullshit because I kicked his fucking ass each and every time.

Halforums, where a discussion about Nintendo Power dredges up unpleasant childhood memories about thieving fuckmouths.

I had a ton, but I think they were tossed in the great "you have too many old magazines" binge when I was a kid and my parents were tired of cleaning up after my brother and I. I might have some random ones lying around in boxes, but most of the NES/SNES era mags are long gone.

I still have all of mine, located in storage... somewhere.

Each issue had a poster inside... some of those posters still adorn my walls.

I loved Nintendo Power as a kid. I remember that SMB2 first issue vividly. The next issue after that was castlevania 2 and megaman 2, it taught me the wrong order for the robot masters (it had you do AIR MAN first before metal man, but otherwise if you moved air man to after wood man, it was perfect). The third issue, I think, was tetris. That magazine made nintendo hard into nintendo fun.

Holy shit that OoT poster! I still have that! I have the one from the N64 Spider-Man issue, too.

I remember that MM2 issue, Gas, it was before I knew how great Metal Man's weapon was. I wondered why Air Man seemed like such a pain compared to Metal Man, too.

So I just realized on that final NP cover...the flag at the end of the cover. The flag that always signifies the end of a level in New Super Mario Bros. :(

I was so pissed when my parents bought me a Sega instead of a Nintendo.Da fuq,mom and dad? Do you want me to become a rebellious kid?Guess so,cuz SEGA sucks!

The shining force games were also an interesting RPG/turn based strategy offering from sega. And need I even go into the Phantasy Star series?

Well, I think this goes a long way to explaining your vocation.

Also, the Genesis was awesome.

This was my first RTS.

This game consumed many hours between my friends and me

And this game was more fun than it should have been (even more fun if you used a game genie)

Just a few selections from the great Genesis era.
