Video Game News and Miscellany

Valve is finally changing Big Picture Mode on Steam to something that's hopefully better:

The tweet about the change seems to be a bit premature, as following the instructions does not result in the new UI displaying, and there hasn't been any download updating beta today.

EDIT: The beta update reached me and I'm not playing around with the new UI.

EDIT2: Holy crap, this new UI needs a lot of work before it's ready to be the main UI for Steam. The sounds are obnoxiously loud, there's a whole bunch of menu items that still assume you're running this on a Steam Deck, using the B button to go back shows inconsistent behavior, while I was playing a game the overlay just stopped working.
I feel like that's all pretty much expected from a beta.

The beta channel of Steam is more of a Release Candidate. If the way things are structured on Steam Deck are any indication (Preview and Main are more like actual beta software), Valve has private builds that are more experimental. If they didn't have this new UI hidden behind a command line argument, I doubt it would have been included in the public beta.

Wow. Just...wow. I'm only about two thirds through this video and it is damning. Especially for Valve, who are doing jack all about the problem.

Me: Hmm, I've been tempted to replay The Witcher 3 lately.
CD Projekt Red: Free Remastered Edition!
Me: Yeah, I can wait a month.

Hmm, looks like I'll be attempting to play the Witcher 3 for the fourth time now. My last three playthroughs all ended a couple of hours into the game because I just couldn't get into it.

Me too. Especially as soon as anything requires crafting/potions/mutagens/whatever. Soon as that happens I just go completely ragdoll and flop on the floor wheezing "UUUUUUUUUUGH"

JUST GIVE ME WHAT I NEED GAME, I DON'T NEED A JOB COLLECTING SHIT IN THE WOODS AND FIGURING OUT HOW TO BASH IT TOGETHER TO GET THE POTION I NEED TO ADVANCE!

Chained Echoes comes out tomorrow. It's the first game in a while that has peaked my interest that I'll probably buy day one.

It's getting pretty stellar reviews thus far.

It's about 20-25 hours long, which is mwa, chef's kiss RPG length for me. Game has been in development for 7 years (!!!).

From the creators of the indie darling, Celeste. Gameplay looks similar to Celeste in some ways, with some added combat. Looks like it could be good.

Nightingale: Realmwalker's Journey

This looks neat and promising, but my intuition is giving me We Happy Few vibes. In that it has an amazing presentation and concept, but the "PVE crafting" part has me feeling cautious. We'll see once we get some more gameplay.

Brought to you by the studio Ghost Story, with developer Ken Levine of Bioshock fame. Looks like we're getting "Bioshock but in space." Space Bioshock! Biospace?

Last one, I promise.

Armored Core: Fires of Rubicon

From FromSoftware.

Vampire Survivors is now on mobile. Seems to have feature parity with the PC version, this definitely isn't the demo. It's free with monetization through watching ads for a revive and/or a gold bonus at the end of a run.

I found control via a virtual joystick to be frustrating, but the game supports Bluetooth gamepads, so I highly suggest connecting one if you want to play.

I am so hyped for this game. Have been waiting for a new one for years.

Hoped Demon X Machina would help scratch the itch, but it only made it worse.
Armored Core is there with Ace Combat as a series that both deserve the AC acronym more than Assassin's Creed and is one I will always be there for, no matter how many games in the series end up being kind of disappointing.

I played every mainline Ace Combat game from 2 to 7. In my opinion 4 was the best. I enjoy the cheesy storylines and the drama so much.

I had no idea that the US Super Nintendo World is scheduled to open in February. I thought it wasn't going to open until like 2024 or later:

Yeah, if it was just a competent arcadey flight combat game, I'd still like it (like the disappointing Assault Horizon) but being set on Endereal and having just apeshit bonkers super weapons and soap opera drama between characters is what makes them special.

The soundtracks too. Mwah.
