I've lost my IR thermometer gun. I can't imagine where I put it.

I'd like it because I want to prove to myself empirically that my tile floors are NOT sub-freezing.

I'm still not entirely clear on how you managed this.
Nice clean slip on ice, Erie style.

Verdict from the Orthopedic Surgeon is I have a fracture of the Posterior medial malleolus. He's considered about ligament damage, so I'll get an MRI to see about that. Hopefully I wont need surgery. There's a winter storm coming in the next couple days so I've decided to say to hell with clinic and spend the rest of the week home.

I also went to the medical equipment store today:

And it's time to cap off the triumvirate. Like @Terrik and @Tinwhistler, guess who just found a patch of ice that looked like a harmless patch of wet concrete right outside the Grimes County Courthouse this afternoon?

I got off way lighter than either of them, though... I've got a bump and some swelling on my knee, but no broken bones or open wounds.

If it's under 30, I won't step on any concrete that looks 'wet'...it's almost certainly ice. I've learned that the hard way spending 10 years in VA. My particular patch of ice was literally invisible, because I was penguin walking on the sidewalk and looking for anything that looked wet. :(

I live in west Houston and I've been very careful walking the past couple of days. I don't want to end up like Harry and Marv from Home Alone.

I really don't like living in a house. Yes, I appreciate the customization. And paying my half of the mortgage is considerably cheaper than half my rent was in the apartment. I'm giving two points in the house's favor. But the maintenance is aggravating. Within the past two months we've had three issues. Our oven's circuit board blew. Then a leaky faucet turned into a wet carpet. Now the garage door sensor is on the fritz. And this is on top of us paying for the upcoming wedding.

In the old apartment, I'd just put in a maintenance request online. And I'd come back from work the next day to see that everything was fixed. It was in a new complex in the Cypress area, and perfectly situated. Shopping, CostCo, and Cinemark were within a five minute drive. The outlet center was about fifteen minutes away. There were more Japanese ramen houses and Crumbl Cookies, and fewer payday loan centers and "accidentes" insurance offices. The neighbors didn't set off fireworks every holiday. I miss that place. But then I browsed through the company website and saw what rent had become. They added at least $700 to monthly rent over the past year. I wouldn't be able to afford that if I were still single. I knew that rents had gone up nationwide but holy shit.

While to each their own and all that...Most of that doesn't seem to have anything to do with house/apartment, and more with owning/renting and location of your particular appt/house, no?

It's one typical of the move from renting an apartment to owning a house stateside, however. It's easier and more affordable usually to get an apartment in a high density area, whereas houses tend to be relegated to the suburban sprawl. Houses in high density areas usually are multiple orders of magnitude more expensive.

Here in Texas especially, the disparity is extra pronounced as people often tend to buy houses 20-40 or so miles out of town down a Farm-To-Market road so they can get "more house for the money" and then have hour-long commutes "into town" to work or go shopping.

I'm easily paying double for my Texas apartment than I'd have expected to pay 10 years ago. But...that's half what I was paying in VA, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have a friend who used to live in Austin, near the UT campus. His old apartment now goes for $3000.

I think about what my family pays for their apartment in San Diego and then realize I don't really have anything to complain about. That's why I put this in the whine thread.

A 2-bedroom apartment with covered parking in my area costs about double my current mortgage payment on a 3 bedroom house with double the square footage and a garage.

Renting an appartment definitely has perks. You just need a single point of contact for any issue and outside of basic cleaning, nothing's your responsibility.

But man, our house is awesome with a gigantic yard in a quiet part of town. AND I have my wife here.

I think I'm gonna stay. :D

I have to say, I didn’t know I needed a garage until I had a garage.
My old apartment had a spacious one-car garage. There was plenty of storage space and I didn't even have much stuff. When it hailed I just parked inside and didn't have to worry about the windshield. My cat also used it as her private opera house because her meows echoed. If it wasn't too hot or cold I'd just open the interior door to the garage and let her play around in there all day. But then a snake got in through the garage door. It was only a corn snake, but I'd also seen copperheads in the neighborhood. I started to monitor the cat's singing recitals after that so I could keep an eye out.
