Rant VIII: The Reckoning

So I went to the doctor a few days ago... I'd been having bouts of coughing up phlegm and vomiting for months after eating certain foods. She thinks it might be a nightshade allergy, so I have to spend the next ten days without eating...

- tomatos
- potatos
- peppers
- eggplant
- Anything made from those

So why is this a problem? My family is one half Italian, one half Irish. That stuff is in like 60% of what we eat, in one form or another. And if it turns out I DO have a nightshade allergy, I'll have to turn normal food stuff I grew up on into rare treats unless I want to deal with potential choking/vomiting issues. So why is this a rant? My mother is taking it as a personal insult that I can't eat this stuff anymore (which she loves to make), like it's my fault I'm getting sick off of this and instead finding other excuses for the cause. I can't deal with her when she goes off the deep end like this, yet it's the holidays so I have to just deal with it.

Sorry it's such a bother mom. I'll just go back to vomiting so you can save your pride.

Had another Friday movie night followed by our usual post-movie pleasures.

Except....kinda hit a hitch this time.

After we were done and just cuddling, we heard Dad up and about and out of his room. I jumped out of bed, trying to think of what to do. He came near the door (which, sadly, is only a pair of sliding doors with windows and a curtain) and asked if I'd taken her home. Wellllll, given that I was naked in the dark hiding behind curtains, I couldn't lie. Then he said, "You better take her home."

So I did. As soon as I got home, I was scolded:

Why am I keeping her out this late when she has a child at home? (besides her mother agreeing to look after him)
What if she gets pregnant? (even though she's on birth control and and I'm using condoms with spermicide)
She's 18 and I'm 36. (And this is only NOW being brought up? Almost six months in?)
It's disrespectful to him and my mother. (Granted, but where else are we gonna go? Can't go to her place and can't afford a hotel room.)

Honestly, I do feel bad that we were "caught." Not in the middle of act, fortunately, but still something that I've surprisingly not had happen to me in my life. I've stated numerous times how much I HATE living with my parents and this is another prime example. I'm adult and should have the freedom to follow through with adult relationships, should I not?

Sounds like it made the both of you uncomfortable. Might want to have a "that's gonna happen" discussion. i.e., he's possibly gonna walk in, you might possibly be "entertaining," etc. If push comes to shove, and he admits that having you doing this in his house makes him uncomfortable, then you might want to remind him that it also makes you uncomfortable, and the sooner you build a relationship, the sooner you can move out, and that's something the both of you want.
I wouldn't do it all confrontational and angrily, though. Work towards the common goal, and all that.

I can understand laying down strict rules for a younger son/daughter. But if circumstances require an older son/daughter to live with their parents, it seems like it would be nice to adjust the rules for your age. I'm no parent, though. Hope things get better.

When it rains it... tries to destroy the house. The previous owners of this house must've DIY'd some of the renovations. And they did a crap job at it. The dormers have always leaked, and with insurance not cooperating and no funds for repairs, it's getting worse and worse. A spare bedroom that is now a storage room was where most of the ceiling damage has occurred, but now it's spread to the kitchen. The attic carpet is soaked, and there's a puddle of water in front of the refrigerator.

We had tried to get it repaired once before, but it didn't take, and then the money dried up. Just fixing the dormers won't work. We probably need a whole new roof before we wind up needing a whole new house. :(

I'm really sorry to hear that. Water damage is no joke, and I really hope you figure out something soon.

My mom will still call me wondering why I'm out so late when they come to visit, because she worries. Bear in mind I have two kids, one who is nearly a teenager. And believe me, no matter the age, parents tend to not want to know about their kids having sex beyond the theoretical.

ALSO, even though my husband and I lived together and had a kid before we were married, my parents and his parents would not allow us to share a bed when we visited because we weren't married.

My wife wants to see Grave of the Fireflies for the first time. She is going to have to see her alone because I don't want to see that movie again. It's a good movie but it is also too much for me.

That movie should come with grief counseling.

My 45 year old friends 12 year old daughter had to watch it for school. I wished them the best of luck.
It's a great movie, and is significant enough in its themes to warrant being required viewing, but it's not what I'd define as a fun time.

It's theme is literally "your generation has had to sacrifice nothing. Sit down, shut up, and stop fucking up the world we died for." according to Miyazaki. He appreciates that some people see it as an ant-war movie, but has gone on record many times to say that THIS is the theme, not the anti-war stuff.

To put it bluntly, GotF was made during a time when there was a lot of youth crime and insubordination in Japan. This was his way of reaching out to them and telling them to stop that shit... but they knew it wouldn't make money, so they double featured it with My Neighbor Totoro so people would see it.

I borrowed them my copy, the film festival winner version. I have zero interest in ever sitting through it again.

I suppose you could say it contains anti-war themes by proxy then. Although I did reflect a bit and contrasted/compared my life to those who underwent great suffering in that period, I feel that the intended theme is far too subtle for many people to comprehend, teenagers especially so. Just my humble opinion on it.

Yay for 46. At this rate I'll never see 47. Car making chugging, whirring, rattling, whining noises. Tooth decides to crumble away hours after I spend my birthday and Xmas money on Amazon, and now the roof. not to mentionthe multiple clusterfarts at work.

Damn it anyway! I'm so close to finishing all the work I have to do to finally graduate (yes, it's a long time coming) and this final project is starting to drag on. I have to have it in by Tuesday but don't want to push it off to tomorrow night.

Aurgh, I just want this finished so I can do anything else!

French Empire Professor: Don't worry class! My finals are easy! It's going to be a two question essay and I just want to know your opinions on things!

Thinking to myself, *That's not so bad...*

*3 weeks later*

French Empire Professor: "Here's the final! 10-page long essay! You can't use outside sources--hope you took good notes! Due in 3 days! Hope you don't have other finals!" *cackles*

Son of a bitch.

If this had been a simple research paper I might have scoffed at 10 pages. But this...

This is just...

Echoing @DarkAudit with leaky roof problems.

My mother- and father-in-law have mentioned to us a couple times that their roof has leaked in the past. This hasn't really been a problem given California's massive drought, but--now that it started raining again--the problem's rearing it's ugly head again. They called us this morning in a panic because it was raining, and the roof was leaking again.

I love them both to pieces, but I'm banging my head against a wall because they were too polite (i.e. didn't want to bother him) to call my dad, a former lather/construction worker, and ask him to come over and check it out/patch it up for them. Despite the fact I'd told them it was okay, that HE'D told them it was okay and he'd love to help them out, and that both of us had told them they really needed to get it checked out before it started raining again. Well, if nothing else I'll be home in a week and a half and we'll be able to spend the day fixing it as best we can.

Hope you get that done soon, man. Reports are saying that by Wednesday we're suppose to get one of the worst storms to hit us in decades.

I had to laugh at this. My mother used to work as a proofreader, and she'll spot typos everywhere. We'll be driving down the highway, and she'll point out errors on billboards.

I don't work as a proofreader, but there are times when I think I should. I've spotted spelling errors in several of my college textbooks which totally blows my mind. I often see them without really looking. Like when I went to get a cup of coffee last week and the holiday special bread was "stolen" instead of stollen.

Gotta do what you gotta do. She'll understand.

It's only possibly that. Not like my cuz's celiac disease where you know... COMPLETELY LIFE CHANGING.
