Rant VIII: The Reckoning

I will say that I personally never had a hard time finding a boyfriend from the age of 16 on, probably due to the fact that I also preferred hanging out with guys and didn't really mesh well with other girls. (I did not pick awkward around girls as my trait out of thin air ;) )

I didn't get along as well with girls when I was high school age and older. I hung out with mostly guys. But the ones I liked saw me as a sister. It was soooo much fun.

I mean, to be fair, I only had three boyfriends total, and I didn't do casual dating. Though my best friend in college got lots of dates from guys who figured since I had a boyfriend, dating her was the next best thing. :/ Boys are weird, dating is weird. THE WHOLE WORLD IS WEIRD.

Well, didn't get much of a break from the neighbor kids. I have the two younger ones. The older boy is staying with grandpa, since grandma is in the hospital here in town. I feel terribly bad for them and wish there was more we could do to help. It seems she is constantly in and out of the hospital for various things and they aren't really helping her. I wish they would keep her in the hospital until things are sorted out. She is really giving everyone a really bad scare right now. :( so we will probably be eating some more about this soon. :(

My kids both had concerts tonight at different schools. After the concert I told my husband to meet us at Dairy Queen so we could have ice cream. My daughter decided she didn't want to wait for daddy to get there, threw a temper tantrum, slapped my phone out of my hand, and broke it. So I ended the night with no phone AND no ice cream. :( (Yes it was in a case, but it landed flat with no bounce.)

Also I taped her concert on it for my husband to watch. SO MUCH FOR THAT.

You can probably recover the data from the phone itself if you're so inclined, but yeah... that's some shit.

My phone is basically stuck in an infinite reboot cycle atm, and the display doesn't work at all. I am sad that Droid followed the iPhone way of not letting you at the battery because I now have my phone sitting in my car so I don't have to listen to it.

The day a piece of progeny decides to maliciously destroy expensive things is the month that child gets nothing but oatmeal and meat loaf with no ketchup.

She didn't think she would break it, which to me is pretty disturbing, in the sense that she thought it was ok to swat at me, and breaking it was "only an accident". But I am not really deciding how bad her punishment is going to be until I see what it's going to cost to deal with this crap. We did at least have damage insurance on it, because I am a klutz without the help of a bratty kid. I am really just sad about it because we were having a really nice day overall until that happened, and then I had to go into angry mom mode instead. :p

Why is this? I've seen other parents do the same (also, I don't know how old she is, obviously). I mean, whether she hit you and broke a $50 phone, or a $800 phone, doesn't really change what she did. Either she hit you on purpose, or she didn't, hard enough to make you drop a phone, or not. Whether you happen to have insurance, just bought a new phone, was going to replace it soon anyway, etc, doesn't really factor into what she did wrong, to me. I'm not saying price can never play a role (there's a difference between stealing $5 from your wallet and stealing $2,000 if she's old enough to know the difference), but "how much you value it" (i.e. that postcard she knows you got from her late grandmother vs a random scrap of paper) seems more important to me.
I guess it depends on the age, as well - I'm assuming she's like 3 or 4 and doesn't really have a firm grasp of monetary cost, based on your pictures; I don't think you can have a 15 year old when you're just past 20 yourself :p

She's 9. I'm going to be the mom of a teenager in 2 months too. :p

Also cost factor is more about how much of her ass she is going to have to work off to replace said monetary value. :p

Last night was the first time that I can remember that I have felt addicted to smoking. I normally smoke about 2-3 pipes a day, and 3 cigars on the weekend. But last night I wanted to have a smoke before I went to bed. Earlier I smoked about half a pipe's worth when I emptied a pouch. So I looked around for the pouch I bought earlier in the week. I could not find it. It was that panic of not being able to find it and the anger I felt because I wanted that bit of relaxation. When I went to check to see if it was in my car, I let my dog out too. He ran off for 20 minutes. So it was a very frustrating evening all around.

BTW I put the pouch in my glove-box when I parked near a prison. I don't like giving people reason to break in my car's windows with things laying in my front seat.

I have my grandfather's pipes, and I have an unnatural desire to use them. I've never really smoked, but I do like the smell of pipe tobacco and I like to idea of sitting on the porch puffing away.

I just watched my great uncle die a slow and painful death to throat, mouth, and lung cancer, caused by a lifetime of smoking. I really don't have that same urge.

That's why I said unnatural. I know it is beyond ridiculous for me to consciously pick up a terrible habit, but damn it, I still want to sometimes.
