Comic Book News

Is it just me or does it feel like all these sudden changes feel really inorganic?
Disney's at the wheel so that's not surprising. They want the comics more in line with the movies and are setting up ways to introduce characters not part of their current stable of films into the Marvel canon at a later date. Hence why they are pushing guys like the Inhumans so hard: they want them ready to pick up the slack once the Avengers are done.

They feel like we've just crossed over into whatever the next "age" of comics is going to be called.

I'd go for the "Age of Rebirth" or something like because everyone wants to start over with leaner, cleaner stories without decades of bloat to contend with.

As long as it's not the "Suck Age"

You misspelled Nu52 :p.

I'm hoping their new line-up won't have multiple titles for a single character, i.e. 5 Bat-titles, etc. Spider-man doesn't need Spider-man, Amazing, Web, and Spectacular; just knock it down to one.

Honestly I read the first issue of the new low-power Supes, along with the first issue of whatever the JL's mew arc is (Darkseid War or something), and they're really not bad.

Hush you! You're only allowed to form your opinions based on what people are saying on the internet and tagline pitches of story ideas, not by actually reading the comics. And make sure whatever you do, that if DC does something you might find interesting, think is a good idea, and want to see more of from them that you stay away from it at all costs.

I do confess I haven't tried out the new stuff yet. If it's good, I'm willing to give it a shot. It's just I saw this image and had a light chuckle considering all the complaints of what's been happening over at DC.

I mean, don't get me wrong, comics are the devil now, but I still read them in secret, away from the watchful eyes of the world.

Also some of the Battleworld/Secret Wars stuff has been pretty fun, though I'm more curious how it's all going to end.

Also also, Doom's face was shown in the last issue of Secret Wars, and he's not looking so good these days.

I was really more surprised to find that he wasn't able to fix his face. Secret Wars has been so good. It and Jem are probably my two favorite books coming out right now.

Apparently in much older comics he's taken the mask off to reveal he's not scarred at all, save for one or two small cuts. The reason he continued to mask himself was pure, Doom-breed vanity which to me is perfect for the character. I don't mind the current zombie-face, as I think it works for this story, but the idea that Doom is so unrepentantly vain he can't let anyone see a single scratch on him is great characterization.

Yeah there is at least one Kirby sketch showing only a tiny scar, and a later full face reveal (after Kirby) showing a bigger, but not terrible scar.

Originally it's a small scar. In the Byrnes run he changes the story so while the explosion resulted in only minor scars, Doom rushes to put on the masks the monks made before it has time to cool.

I honestly that works even better than Kirby's version. Making his self perceived disfigurement reality, and just like the original explosion, his fault entirely.

Problem is, back in the day. when they showed Doom build his armour, he basically put on his mask right after it came out of the forge, so even if it was only a small scar after the accident, it wouldn't have been after that.

Plus, it plays into Doom's vanity and ego. Even the slightest imperfection will not stand for Doom.

First thing that went through my mind was "Why the hell did he post a bunch of Jigglypuff's?"

Then I remembered Kirby, and still thought Jigglypuff.

A 20-year-old college student in Yucaipa, California is protesting the inclusion of four landmark graphic novels in an English class that she took during the recently-finished Spring 2015 semester at Crafton Hills College. According to the Redlands Daily Facts newspaper, Tara Shultz and her parents object to Persepolis, Fun Home, Y: The Last ManVol. 1, and The Sandman Vol. 2: The Doll’s House as “pornography” and “garbage.”

Shultz, who is working towards an Associate of Arts in English at the public community college, signed up for English 250: Fiction because it fulfills one part of her degree requirements. She was apparently aware that the specific focus of the class was graphic novels, but she told the newspaper that “I expected Batman and Robin, not pornography.” Shultz says that Associate Professor Ryan Bartlett, who has taught the course for three terms without any other complaints, failed to adequately warn students about the books’ content. Her father Greg Shultz said that “if they (had) put a disclaimer on this, we wouldn’t have taken the course.” Tara Shultz agreed, saying that Bartlett “should have stood up the first day of class and warned us.”

One facepalm isn't enough for that.

There's things you could describe as "pornography" in any genre of literature. Has the girl never properly read the Bible? Much worse in there.

Fun Home is one of the best graphic novels I've ever read, and I've read plenty. Honestly, I never bring that book up in relation to comic books because in my mind it's more literature than graphic art. Even though it totally is a graphic novel.

I mean, even within the superhero genre, there's some real questionable stuff.

Is it wrong that, just to screw with her, I'd include these two scenes in presentation slides?

Or hell, if she wants to see REAL comic book pornography, someone can show her Alan Moore's Lost Girls.[DOUBLEPOST=1434233471,1434233253][/DOUBLEPOST]

As someone once told me perfectly: all graphic novels are comics, but not all comics are graphic novels. It's a comic, to be sure and a DAMN good one, you're right.
